James Gunn Offers Update on DC's PARADISE LOST Series and It's Connection to WONDER WOMAN Movie — GeekTyrant

DC fans eager to revisit Themyscira, you're in luck, DC Studios is still developing its Paradise Lost series. The show is set on Wonder Woman's mythic island home, and in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn gave a small but welcome update on the project and how it fits into the broader DCU, especially when it comes to the newly revealed Wonder Woman movie. 'Paradise Lost is moving along. It's slow-moving, but it's moving. And, yeah, I really love that project a lot.' When asked whether the series is connected to the upcoming Wonder Woman film, Gunn got a little… well, Gunn-ish: 'Yes. Well, yes and no. Wonder Woman's a separate thing. We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. So it's different. I mean, not different. They're connected. She's from f—ing Themyscira, so…' What we do know is that Paradise Lost is still coming, even if it won't feature Diana at all. It's meant to take place long before her birth and will explore the politics, power struggles, and mythology of Themyscira itself. Gunn has previously described the show as a kind of DCU-flavored Game of Thrones , a political fantasy thriller set in a paradise that isn't as peaceful as it looks. The show was originally announced in January 2023 as part of the first slate of the DCU reboot, and it's believed to take inspiration from the Paradise Island Lost comic arc by Phil Jimenez and George Pérez. While the creative teams for Paradise Lost and the untitled Wonder Woman movie haven't been revealed, Gunn did confirm for the first time that 'Wonder Woman's being written right now.' With Superman set to launch the new DCU on July 11th, all eyes are now on how the rest of the slate will take shape, including when we'll finally set foot on Themyscira again. Until then, we wait.

James Gunn Dropped A Huge Wonder Woman Update, And It's Part Of A Larger Plan

When it was first announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran were taking over DC Films, and that an entirely new DC Universe would launch from that, fans had a lot of questions. While it soon became clear we would get a new Superman and a new Batman, the future of other major DC characters was a lot less clear, most notably, Wonder Woman. It seems that's really starting to change, though. The first Wonder Woman movie starring Gal Gadot and directed by Patty Jenkins was one of DC's biggest hits in the previous franchise, and yet, the original unveiling of James Gunn's first chapter of the DCU had no specific path forward for the Amazonian. In a recent conversation with EW, however, Gunn confirms that not only is a new Wonder Woman movie planned, it's currently in development. Gunn said... We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now. Considering Wonder Woman's popularity and previous success, it was a bit surprising that she hadn't been mentioned in the first batch of upcoming DC movies. Fans will now certainly have a lot of questions about what the plan is for this new movie, but they'll surely be happy to hear that it's happening. While the movie is apparently being written, Gunn does not mention who is actually penning it. This isn't unusual, of course. For instance, it's known that a DCU Batman movie is also being written, and a writer for that film hasn't been revealed either. As for the bigger plan aspect of this, the movie isn't the only piece of the new DCU connected to Wonder Woman. Gunn confirmed that the previously announced Wonder Woman-adjacent project, Paradise Lost, a prequel series set on the island of Thymascira, WW's home, but set long before her time, was still in development. Gunn called the series "slow-moving" but assured that it is still moving forward. Originally, with the prequel series announced without a directWonder Woman project, it seemed the series was likely designed to stand alone. With a movie now confirmed to be in development, one wonders if there may now be more direct connections between the two pieces of the franchise. When it comes to the film, the next big question, of course, will be just who is going to play Wonder Woman. Gunn made it clear that decision has not been made. He has previously said casting isn't considered until a script is finished. Casting somebody new in the role would seem to be the most likely scenario but, as some actors from the previous DC franchise are set to return in the new one, the return of Gal Gadot cannot be entirely discounted. There were plans for a Wonder Woman 3 starring Gadot before the franchise reboot took place. For a while, there have been conflicting reports regarding who ultimately walked away from the project first. Nevertheless, I'm excited that James Gunn and co. are moving full steam ahead in order to craft a new version of the Amazonian warrior for the DCU.

DC fans have been awaiting news of the new instalment for a while. Gunn stated during the interview that "We're working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman's being written right now." While recalling the production studio's CEO David Zaslav's statement on the characters of Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, and Supergirl being the 'anchors of DC', he stated, "I think that's accurate, actually." He also confirmed that the 'Wonder Woman' films are completely separate from the 'Paradise Lost' TV series as well. "I think that he got that from something I said. I wouldn't say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us. "Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and then we're dealing with the other two," the director added while talking about the main characters of DC. New 'Superman' film already in the works? Gunn drops hints During the same interview, Gunn dropped hints about the 'Superman' sequel, citing that the next film will not follow the 'traditional route'. When asked about the next film, he stated that 'What I'm working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily.' Soon after his statement was made public, fans of the DC universe started speculating that the possibility of the Dark Knight making an entry in the sequel may be a possibility. While Superman and Batman tend to keep to themselves when fighting crimes, in the comics there is a separate series titled 'World's Finest' where the two characters often pair up to fight villains that are bigger than themselves.

Satanic Temple, ACLU file discrimination complaint over canceled Iowa Capitol event

Iowa satanists are accusing state officials of discrimination and retaliation after they were blocked from hosting a holiday celebration last year at the Iowa Capitol. The claim, filed by the American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, asserts that the Iowa Department of Administrative Services and Gov. Kim Reynolds' office violated the Iowa Civil Rights Act. The ACLU filed the claim Tuesday, June 10, with the Iowa Office of Civil Rights, a necessary prerequisite to a potential lawsuit. The filing centers on the 2024 holiday season, in which the temple sought to host a "Holiday Display Day" on Dec. 14 in the Capitol. Plans for the event included "family-friendly" activities: a procession and invocation, a Krampus costume contest, holiday caroling and crafts such as ornament decorating and coloring pages. The complaint notes that other religious groups have been allowed to offer similar events. The group applied for permission in October but says it was not until Dec. 9, days before the event, that the Department of Administrative Services denied it a permit, citing a policy against "actions that are harmful to minors including, but not limited to, obscene materials and gratuitous violence or gore." The temple says it was told that officials feared sticks, traditionally a part of the costume for Krampus — a half-goat, half-man mythical creature who accompanies St. Nicholas and punishes misbehaving youngsters — would be used to hit children. The temple denies its event would have included striking children, or any other violence, obscenity or gore. It says it tried to make changes to its plan to address concerns, but got no response. Since then the group, which is separately suing Reynolds' office in an open records dispute, says it has learned the governor's office was directly involved in the rejection of their event, ACLU Legal Director Rita Bettis Austen said in a media call Tuesday. "Based on responses to open record requests, which are not complete and the subject of separate litigation, we can actually see a pretty clear picture that IDAS and the governor's office staff were meeting during that time to come up with a justification for this predetermined denial, really regardless of what the actual content of the event were," she said. The complaint also notes past incidents of alleged discrimination against the Satanic Temple, including the high-profile vandalism of its display at the Capitol during the holidays in 2023 and the denial of a proposed multi-day reading of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" in 2024 under rules that allegedly have not been applied to other religious groups. Austen said the temple believes the 2024 holiday event denial is partly in retaliation for complaints over these prior incidents. Previously: Iowa Capitol satanic idol vandal sentenced to probation in plea deal that drops hate crime "Members of the Satanic Temple of Iowa have the same right to express their beliefs as all other religious groups do, and Iowa officials treated the Iowa congregation worse than other groups because they don't approve of their religion," she said. "It's wrong, its illegal under the Iowa Civil Rights Act." Mortimer Adramelech, a minister with the Iowa congregation, said in a statement that his church believes in principles including compassion, empathy and respect for others' freedoms. "It's frustrating because displays and celebrations like the one we would like to have at the Capitol help educate people more about The Satanic Temple members and the values we embrace," he said. "Instead, state officials have tried to silence us while promoting other more popular religions." While Tuesday's filing is a necessary legal prerequisite to a lawsuit, Austen declined to comment on their potential timing and strategy for future litigation.
