Out derm spot! We take a dive into the new salmon sperm skincare trend

Carmen Williams dives into the latest breakthrough in skincare, PDRN, a DNA-derived ingredient often sourced from salmon sperm, that's transforming skin repair, anti-aging, and post-treatment recovery. Get into the science behind PDRN, its proven benefits, and why South African clinics are beginning to embrace this innovative treatment. Whether you're curious about in-clinic options or topical applications, this guide has everything you need to decide if PDRN deserves a spot in your skincare routine. Retinol, ceramides and hyaluronic acid are just some of the trendy skincare ingredients we've seen in the last few years, but now there's a new supreme – and its origins might surprise you. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a DNA fragment most commonly sourced from salmon sperm, is being hailed as a game-changer for skin repair, anti-ageing, and post-treatment recovery. But does it live up to the hype? Are South African aesthetic clinics offering these treatments? And what should you know before trying this new miracle ingredient? News24 spoke to Dr Dilshaad Asmal, a dermatologist, and Maryke Kaasjager, aesthetician and owner of Best Laser and Skin Clinic, to unpack the science, benefits, and whether this ingredient is worth adding to your skincare routine. What exactly is it? PDRN is a DNA-derived ingredient that promotes cell regeneration, collagen production, and wound healing. Originally studied for its ability to speed up recovery in diabetic ulcers (with one Italian study showing 37.3% of PDRN-treated wounds fully healing within eight weeks compared to just 18.9% in the placebo group), it has since made its way into aesthetic medicine and luxury skincare. 'It has regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties,' explains Asmal. 'It stimulates fibroblasts, the cells responsible for collagen, and helps with new blood vessel formation, ensuring better nutrient delivery to skin cells.' READ | Skincare and tattoos: What retinol, acids, and vitamin C will do to your ink What surprises most people is that most PDRN in use today comes from a derivative of salmon sperm, thanks to a similarity between the polynucleotides extracted from salmon DNA and human DNA. However, plant-based alternatives are emerging, like ginseng-derived PDRN. Ginseng has antioxidant properties and may improve hydration and elasticity, but it's more commonly found in cosmetic products rather than medical treatments. Salmon-based PDRN remains the gold standard - unless you're allergic to seafood (more on that later). Kaasjager's clinic became interested in using PDRN after seeing its success overseas. 'We're always on the lookout for innovative, evidence-based treatments that deliver real results,' says Kaasjager. 'After diving into clinical studies and witnessing its success in Korean and European clinics, we decided to incorporate it into our microneedling treatments.' PDRN in skincare: What can it actually do? According to Asmal, the most proven benefits of PDRN include: Firmer, smoother, more elastic skin Reduced fine lines and wrinkles Improved hydration and skin tone Faster healing post-surgery or laser treatments Kaasjager also praises the ingredient and its benefits. But there's a catch - how you use it matters. Injected vs topical: What works better? Injected PDRN (used in clinics) penetrates deep into the dermis, activating collagen synthesis and blood vessel formation. Topical PDRN (serums, creams) has limited penetration due to the skin barrier. 'Studies support that injected PDRN is more effective,' says Asmal. So, while PDRN-infused serums may offer some benefits, in-office treatments (like microneedling with PDRN) deliver far better results. At Best Laser and Skin Clinic, Kaasjager and her team offer various treatment options, such as a microneedling serum during Dermapen treatments, radio-frequency needling, and after HIFU skin tightening. 'While still considered advanced in South Africa, awareness is growing rapidly,' says Kaasjager. Who should try PDRN? PDRN isn't just for anti-ageing; it's a great skincare multitasker that can help with: Ageing skin (boosts collagen, reduces wrinkles) Acne scars & pigmentation (improves skin tone) Post-laser or peel recovery (speeds healing) Inflammatory skin conditions (soothes irritation) Hair growth (early studies suggest scalp benefits) Post-surgery healing (used in plastic and orthopaedic surgery) Is it safe for all skin types? Kaasjager says that PDRN is generally safe for all skin types, even sensitive skin, but precautions are taken with clients who have seafood allergies, active infections, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. 'We prefer using it with microneedling treatments for better tolerance,' she says. 'Ensure you're working with a trained professional using high-quality PDRN and have realistic expectations. Best results come from a series of treatments and a holistic skincare approach,' adds Kaasjager. Can PDRN replace retinol or microneedling? The short answer? No. But it is a potent enhancer of those treatments. 'It's not a replacement, but it enhances outcomes,' says Asmal. PDRN + retinol = Better hydration and repair for sensitive skin PDRN + Microneedling = Faster collagen stimulation Kaasjager says PDRN can make for a powerful combo: 'When combined with RF microneedling or laser, PDRN accelerates healing, amplifies collagen production, and reduces downtime. It's a game-changer for achieving better textural improvements and glow.' She adds that PDRN works well with hyaluronic acid, peptides, ceramides, and niacinamide, but aggressive exfoliants should be avoided after treatment to ensure the most benefits. It is worth noting that PDRN is not suitable for those with seafood allergies, particularly an allergy to salmon. Be sure to inform your aesthetician of your allergy before treatment of any kind. What are the risks and side effects? While using PDRN is generally safe, you should watch out for: - Redness, swelling, or itching (common at injection sites); - Rare allergic reactions (especially if you have a seafood allergy because it should be avoided in that case); - Avoid if pregnant, breastfeeding, or immunocompromised. Is it just a niche fad, or will it become mainstream? While it's still a luxury treatment, Asmal believes PDRN has staying power. 'There's a growing demand for non-invasive anti-ageing treatments,' she says. 'It's being used in dermatology, plastic surgery, and post-laser care.' But she warns: 'It is not a miracle anti-ageing treatment, and it does not work immediately. Its effects are gradual, and multiple sessions are needed to see results. There is no instant gratification.' Kaasjager adds that in-office treatments can produce faster results, but they still take a while: 'With microneedling, clients typically see improved hydration within 7-10 days. Long-term benefits like improved texture and elasticity become noticeable after 3-4 sessions.' But if you're using topical treatments, look for products that have been clinically tested by reputable manufacturers. 'Professional-grade products generally have higher concentrations,' she says. 'We believe PDRN is on the trajectory to become much more mainstream, especially as regenerative aesthetics grow. It may soon become a standard skin-repair ingredient,' says Kaasjager. PDRN is more than just a skincare trend - it's a clinically backed regenerative treatment with documented benefits when incorporated into skincare routines under professional supervision. While topical products may offer some perks, the best results come from in-clinic procedures. Microneedling treatments with a dermapen at Best Laser and Skin Clinic are R1 590 for the basic treatment, but there's an additional fee of R300 if you're adding PDRN.

TRENDS INFLUENCING THE GROWTH OF THE POLYDEOXYRIBONUDEOTIDE (PDRN) MARKET Solution-based PDRN formulations are playing a pivotal role in expanding the market due to their convenience, fast absorption, and targeted therapeutic efficiency. These liquid formats are widely used in mesotherapy, dermatological treatments, and regenerative injections, where rapid delivery to specific skin or tissue layers is crucial. Clinics and aesthetic centers prefer solution-based PDRN as they reduce preparation time and ensure consistent dosing. Moreover, solution formulations are compatible with a wide range of medical devices and allow for combination therapies with other active agents. Their versatility and effectiveness in promoting tissue repair, improving skin texture, and reducing inflammation significantly enhance their appeal, thereby propelling demand within the growing PDRN market. Powder-based PDRN products are gaining traction in the market due to their long shelf life, stability, and flexibility in formulation. These products are typically reconstituted with sterile water or saline before use, offering precision and control in dosage based on the treatment area. Powdered PDRN is especially popular in cosmetic clinics and research applications, where practitioners may customize concentrations for individual patients. The demand for minimally invasive aesthetic procedures has surged, and powdered formats meet the requirements for microneedling, skin rejuvenation, and scar treatment. Additionally, powdered PDRN reduces the risk of microbial contamination, making it a preferred option in sterile clinical environments, thus supporting market growth. The cosmetic industry is a major driver of the PDRN market due to its increasing reliance on biologically active ingredients for anti-aging, skin repair, and aesthetic treatments. PDRN, known for stimulating cell regeneration and collagen production, is widely incorporated in procedures like mesotherapy, skin boosters, and serums. As consumer preference shifts toward non-surgical and regenerative beauty solutions, cosmetic clinics and dermatologists are adopting PDRN-based products to deliver visibly youthful skin with minimal downtime. High demand from Asia, especially South Korea and Japan, where skin care innovations lead global trends, also contributes to rapid growth. Thus, cosmetics remain a cornerstone segment, fueling PDRN market expansion. The growing demand for regenerative therapies in aesthetics is significantly boosting the PDRN market. Consumers are increasingly seeking non-invasive treatments that provide natural, long-lasting results. PDRN, derived from salmon DNA, promotes tissue repair and cellular regeneration, making it ideal for skin rejuvenation, wound healing, and scar treatment. Its integration into mesotherapy and facial injectables aligns with patient demand for biologically active, safer alternatives to synthetic fillers. This regenerative trend is especially prominent in Asia and gradually expanding in Western markets, where clinics are offering combination treatments that include PDRN. The shift toward healing-based beauty solutions strongly supports market growth in the aesthetic domain. PDRN's effectiveness in accelerating wound healing is a key factor driving its medical adoption. It enhances tissue repair, reduces inflammation, and improves skin regeneration, making it suitable for treating chronic wounds, burns, ulcers, and post-surgical scars. Dermatologists use PDRN in creams, gels, and injections to treat skin conditions such as eczema, acne scars, and atopic dermatitis. Its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to boost microcirculation improve patient outcomes and reduce recovery times. As healthcare providers prioritize tissue repair in both clinical and homecare settings, the demand for PDRN in therapeutic dermatology continues to grow, positively impacting the overall market. The global anti-aging market is expanding rapidly, creating new opportunities for PDRN-based solutions. PDRN's ability to stimulate fibroblast activity, improve skin elasticity, and reduce fine lines has made it a key ingredient in injectable serums and creams. Clinics offer skin booster treatments using PDRN to restore hydration and radiance, particularly in the face, neck, and hands. As consumers seek safer alternatives to Botox and dermal fillers, PDRN stands out for its regenerative approach with fewer side effects. With aging populations and beauty consciousness rising worldwide, particularly among millennials and older adults, the anti-aging segment remains a strong growth pillar for the PDRN market. PDRN is increasingly used in combination therapies, which is driving innovation and market growth. It is often paired with hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamins, and growth factors to enhance overall treatment efficacy. Such combinations offer synergistic effects—while PDRN accelerates cellular repair, other agents provide hydration, nourishment, and tightening. This integration allows for comprehensive solutions addressing multiple skin concerns, including dullness, sagging, and pigmentation. Aesthetic practitioners prefer these formulations for customized treatments tailored to patient needs. The success of combination-based injectable products has led to new launches and broader adoption, pushing the PDRN market to evolve rapidly in both medical and cosmetic fields. Medical tourism, particularly in Asia-Pacific countries like South Korea, Thailand, and Malaysia, is contributing significantly to the PDRN market. These destinations are known for offering high-quality aesthetic and regenerative treatments at lower costs, attracting international patients. Clinics in these countries often market advanced therapies including PDRN-based injectables and facials as part of their service portfolio. The rising global interest in Korean beauty standards has also helped promote PDRN usage in non-invasive skincare. Coupled with government support and private investment in healthcare tourism, the influx of patients from Europe, the Middle East, and North America is boosting demand for sterile, effective PDRN products. Amazon's face serum with salmon DNA praised for improving skin 'fast'

The ANUA PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Serum has been branded a 'wonder product' by Amazon shoppers, Amazon is now stocking a new face serum made with one unusual ingredient —salmon DNA—and customers are praising it for its remarkable effects. The skincare product is formulated with PDRN, which stands for Polydeoxyribonucleotide, a compound derived from salmon sperm renowned for its healing and anti-inflammatory properties. The key ingredient is generally extracted from salmon sperm and promotes cell growth. This is particularly beneficial for fibroblasts, which play a significant part in collagen production. PDRN also triggers angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, speeding up the body's natural repair mechanisms. For those keen to experience PDRN's benefits, numerous retailers offer products containing this compound, including Superdrug's Medicube PDRN Pink Peptide Serum priced at £26. You can find this serum at Tesco, too. Amazon lists ANUA's PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Capsule 100 Serum in a 30ml bottle for £20. Boots stocks the identical item at an equivalent price. Packed with 100ppm PDRN and containing 'Smart Capsule Technology ', this daily-use facial serum promises heightened hydration, leaving skin feeling 'smooth and refreshed', reports the Manchester Evening News. Amazon adds: " Combining PDRN, Hyaluronic Acid, and Collagen for this formula helps maintain the skin's natural moisture barrier for hydration and a luminous appearance." Not only does the serum promise to improve the skin's natural glow, but its 'emerald-toned smoothing formula' is also touted as suitable for use all year round. Amazon says: "Multi-use for perfect skincare. Use after toner as a lightweight serum, layer 2-3 times at night for a skin feel smooth and refreshed after use, or blend into foundation for a glass skin. It is ideal for your at-home Korean self-care routine." It's critical to mention that ANUA's PDRN Hyaluronic Acid Serum isn't suitable for vegans since it contains salmon. The product boasts an impressive consumer score of 4.8 out of 5 stars. In their feedback, a customer wrote: "An easy 5 stars. This is the first product that made me realise what people mean when they talk about 'glass skin'! It takes a few minutes to sink in but it absorbs beautifully into the skin, I'd say it gives a lovely boost and healthy glow once it's settled." They added: "There's a really nice plumping impression around my cheeks since I started using it. This hasn't caused me any breakouts and it works well in tandem with my other skincare products and it doesn't cause piling under makeup. It's definitely an addition to my routine that's here to stay!" But, another said: "After a few uses, I'm not entirely sure it's doing a huge amount other than the usual hyaluronic acid hydration. It's nice enough. There is nothing wrong with it, and I've had no negative effects. It just seems okay, really, nothing amazing." One more praised: "I love the bottle and the premium appearance. Reading through the ingredients, there are lots of beneficial anti-ageing and plant extracts included. It's a great quality product and I'm really pleased with the results and how well it's helped to restore the balance to my skin." Another put: "The product sank into my skin beautifully and I found no irritation. I am very happy to recommend!" A different user, expressing some uncertainty, said: "I have tried it a few times now and while finding it works well underneath a moisturiser, I didn't notice any visible difference. However, I have been feeling pretty run down since yesterday, and expected to see this reflected in my face, but surprisingly, I don't think it was. So it seems to be doing something if not necessarily plumping the skin." Someone else added: "This is a great product for skin plumping and firming. It feels more watery than serum-like when it goes on, which initially made me question how rich and effective it is, but I was wrong, too! It is now part of my morning staple, and I apply it after the shower before moisturiser, and have noticed immediate effects and improved results with every use. Cannot recommend highly enough." Another wrote: "It leaves my skin feeling hydrated and refreshed, with a soft glow. I haven't used it long enough to speak to long-term results, but so far I'm impressed with how gentle and effective it feels." But, someone said: "There is a slight tacky residue but this doesn't last long. It's hard to pinpoint any results especially if you use a product in combination with other new products." This salmon DNA duo went viral for a reason — Amazon's got it 20% off

New York Post may be compensated and/or receive an affiliate commission if you click or buy through our links. Featured pricing is subject to change. It started with one girl, one syringe-looking serum, and one TikTok that now has over half a million views. If the hyper-glowy promise of salmon DNA hasn't already seduced you, let me introduce you to the product that's been swimming through beauty-lovers' algorithms: the Medicube Salmon DNA PDRN Duo. And yes — it's currently 20% off on Amazon, so you already know how this story ends (spoiler: in checkout). The TikTok in question? Aamna Adel (@aamnaadel) doing what she does best: looking flawless and making it seem accidental. In her now-viral clip, she applies the Medicube PDRN Petptide Serum with the kind of dewy, unbothered elegance that makes you wonder if this is the thing that'll finally fix your face. And honestly? It might be. The set includes two powerful, beginner-friendly steps: the Salmon DNA PDRN pink collagen jelly gel mask and matching serum, both loaded with PDRN (Polydeoxyribonucleotide, thank you very much), which is derived from — you guessed it — salmon and known for its skin-repairing, plumping, glow-up-from-within powers. Amazon The Medicube Salmon DNA PDRN Duo for Beginners is a two-step skincare set featuring the brand's cult-favorite PDRN Jelly Masks and complementary matching serum. Both products harness polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN), a regenerative ingredient derived from salmon DNA, known for its ability to repair damaged skin, improve elasticity, and promote deep hydration. The serum is lightweight but potent, delivering a concentrated boost of nutrients, while the jelly masks lock in moisture with a barrier-strengthening formula that's safe even for sensitive or beginner skin types. Together, the duo works synergistically to target dullness, fine lines, and overall texture for visibly plumper, smoother skin. What makes this duo so appealing isn't just the packaging (which is very 'derm office, but pink'), or the way it makes your skin look like you sleep eight hours and never stress-eat salt. It's that it taps into the derm-trend pipeline without requiring a visit to the clinic or a tolerance for pain. This is a routine you will stick to, because it feels like results in a bottle, and because everyone and their influencer sister is using it.
