RR Pogoy, TNT keep grand slam bid alive with one-point escape vs. Magnolia
PBA Philippine Cup. June 18, 2025. RR Pogoy (16) of the TNT Tropang 5G against the Magnolia Hotshots. (Photo: PBA Media) RR Pogoy made sure TNT is not going home tonight, sizzling late to fuel their 89-88 escape against twice-to-beat Magnolia in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday at the Philsports Arena. Pogoy, stepping up for a depleted TNT backcourt due to the absence of Jayson Castro and Rey Nambatac, posted a game-high 30 points including 12 in the fourth quarter to force a do-or-die Game 2 on Saturday. "Ano lang talaga, 'yung mindset ko lang this game is ayaw ko magpatalo, ayaw ko mag-bakasyon. Binabasa lang namin 'yung Magnolia kasi last game [against sa kanila] ang dami naming turnovers," Pogoy said. TNT had to dig deep late after staring at a four-point deficit entering the fourth quarter with Pogoy hitting a triple before Calvin Oftana shot a free throw off a technical foul from Mark Barroca to tie things up at 69-all. Magnolia then kept it close from there before TNT created enough separation thanks to timely triples from bug men Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser and Kelly Williams, 86-81, while an Oftana layup made it a seven-point cushion for the Tropang 5G. The Hotshots, though, responded with two long baskets after Rome Dela Rosa hit a triple and Paul Lee buried a cold-blooded four-point shot to force an 88-all deadlock. Magnolia had the chance to win it, but Zavier Lucero could not get past the pesky defense of Pogoy as TNT kept its grand slam bid very much alive. TNT head coach Chot Reyes stressed completing a hat-trick of titles is far from their mind. "First of all, it's really not in their minds but my attitude is these guys have done so much already this year. If the grand slam is not for us, then it's not for us," Reyes said. "But it's not going to take away what we have achieved already this season." Scores: TNT 89– Pogoy 30, Oftana 21, Williams 12, Heading 10, Ganuelas-Rosser 5, Erram 4, Galinato 2, Heruela 0, Aurin 0, Enciso 0, Varilla 0, Khobuntin 0. Magnolia 88 – Lee 15, Navarro 14, Lucero 14, Lastimosa 12, Sangalang 10, Dela Rosa 10, Barroca 6, Dionisio 4, Laput 2, Reavis 1, Alfaro 0. Jhonard Clarito drops big 20-21 double-double as ROS drags NLEX to do-or-die QF
PBA Philippine Cup. June 18, 2025. Jhonard Clarito (22) of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters against the NLEX Road Warriors. (Photo: PBA Media) Jhonard Clarito dazzled on both ends to steer Rain or Shine to a gutsy 92-89 win against twice-to-beat NLEX in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday at the PhilSports Arena. Clarito provided the spark and hustle amid the Road Warriors' second half surge as they extended their life in the conference by forcing a do-or-die Game 2 on Saturday. The versatile guard poured in 20 points and 21 rebounds laced with one assist, one steal, and one block to allow the Elasto Painters near a semifinals seat. "We were just patient. Basketball is a game of runs, we had our run in the first half (and) they had their run in the third quarter. Mabuti na lang nakabalik kami nu'ng fourth quarter," Rain or Shine head coach Yeng Guiao said. "Just sheer hard work, sheer effort, and just the desire to extend the series. Si jhonad nakita natin effort niya, buwis buhay talaga." Rain or Shine flexed its muscle early on, dropping seven three-pointers in the first half to create enough separation against the second-seeded NLEX, 47-37. But the Road Warriors got a heavy lifting from Xyrus Torres in the third quarter with the former FEU standout dropping 14 points in the frame, including a triple that gave NLEX its first lead at 61-60. That Torres outburst was infectious among the Road Warriors bench with Jonnel Policarpio and Brandon Ramirez closing out the third period with a 73-69 lead. Clarito, though, came alive to provide the lifeline. He, alongside Santi Santillan, fueled a 10-4 run to open the fourth before completing two consecutive putback plays that sent Rain or Shine to an 86-83 cushion with 3:01 left. Another pair of offensive rebounds from him led to a putback basket for Adrian Nocum that saw the Elasto Painters enjoying a 90-85 lead before Robert Bolick answered with a crucial four-pointer to cut the gap to one. Bolick, though, missed two baskets in a row that led to another huge rebound for Clarito, who would then seal the victory with two freebies. That hustle pretty much summed up what Rain or Shine wanted in the first place as they refused to go home tonight. "Dinaan lang namin sa sipag, sa rebound tsaka nagtulong-tulong din 'yung teammates ko. Sabi ni coach walang matatalo sa depensa, kailangan buwis buhay talaga," Clarito said. Nocum also finished with 20 points while grabbing five rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Santillan chipped in 16 markers, seven boards, and one dime. Torres tallied 20 points, three rebounds, two assists, and one steal in the losing effort while Javee Mocon and Bolick chimed in with 16 and 15 markers each. Scores: Rain or Shine 92 – Clarito 20, Nocum 20, Santillan 16, Caracut 10, Mamuyac 7, Tiongson 6, Asistio 5, Porter 4, Norwood 4, Datu 0. NLEX 89 – Torres 20, Mocon 16, Bolick 15, Ramirez 11, Semerad 9, Bahio 6, Alas 6, Nieto 2, Fajardo 2, Policarpio 2. Quarters: 28-15, 47-37, 69-73, 92-89. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Ginebra rains down on Rain or Shine late to clinch playoff bonus
Barangay Ginebra wasted an early lead, but recovered in the perfect time to hack out a 98-80 win over Rain or Shine and seal a twice-to-beat bonus in the PBA Season 49 Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Ynares Center Antipolo. The Gin Kings squandered an 18-point advantage in the second period but mounted a huge fourth quarter en route to the victory that allowed them to seal the fourth spot with an 8-3 card. They take on Converge next round armed with the playoff incentive. Stephen Holt did the heavy lifting in the second half to finish with 27 points together with 12 rebounds, and four assists while Japeth Aguilar and Jamie Malonzo chipped in 18 and 15 markers apiece. "This is Stephen all the time. This is Stephen at practice. If you guys come to our practice and watch Stephen, this is Stephen all the time. The effort he brings on both sides is really phenomenal," Ginebra coach Tim Cone said of his guard. "He really leads by example and tonight he really had a good shooting night." Already enjoying a 40-22 lead in the second period, the Gin Kings lost steam with Rain or Shine staging a resistance in the form of a 21-5 closing run led by Anton Asistio, who buried a four-point shot and back-to-back triples in that stretch to cut the gap to two, 43-45. Rain or shine even tied it up at 59-all in the third before Ginebra responded with a 15-8 rampage that saw the Gin Kings slowly rebuilding a lead at 74-67. They then opened the fourth with a 15-0 blitz fueled by two three-pointers from Holt as Ginebra completely changed the tempo of the game with an 89-67 lead before Jayson David's own trey made it a 92-69 cushion for Ginebra with still 7:12 left. "My mentality starts in practice. It's the final game of the elimination so we just wanted to finish on the right foot and continue the momentum we have," Holt said. "This is our third try to win the championship so we understand the task at hand and every detail matters to us." With Ginebra's win, the top eight has been completed with San Miguel (8-3) taking the top seed and will take on eighth-seeded Meralco (6-5) in the quarterfinals while NLEX (8-3) will face (6-5) Rain or Shine. Third seed Magnolia (8-3) will slug it out against grand slam seeking TNT (6-5) while Ginebra faces the FiberXers (7-4). The quarterfinals start on Wednesday NLEX and Magnolia eyeing an outright semis spots at 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively, while San Miguel and Ginebra are out to do the same on Friday.
