Watching Porn On Your Phone? Here's How You Could Get Scammed

Last Updated: Cyber gangs exploit fear using threats, fake identities like CBI or NCB, and demand Aadhaar, PAN, or OTP to extort money by pushing victims into impulsive actions In a disturbing trend, Hyderabad has seen a surge in cyber scams where fraudsters are exploiting individuals by making false allegations of involvement in illicit activities, including watching child pornography and drug and money laundering crimes, in a bid to extort money and intimidate their victims. A resident of LB Nagar in Hyderabad recently received a suspicious WhatsApp message claiming to be from the Union Home Ministry. The message read, 'We have identified you through your IP address. A case has been registered in the Cybercrime Lab regarding the viewing of child pornography videos. If you do not respond within 24 hours, the Delhi Police will take action." Recognizing the tactics of cyber extortion, the individual realised it was likely a scam. In another incident, a retired government employee in the city fell victim to a cyber scam after receiving a threatening phone call accusing him of involvement in drug and money laundering cases. The caller said, 'You are involved in drug cases and money laundering, and we need your Aadhaar card number." He provided his Aadhar card number out of fear. The scammers then leveled further allegations, including watching pornographic videos, and extorted Rs. 1.5 lakh from him. The incident was later confirmed to be a fraud after he reported it to the police. What Is The Scammers' Modus Operandi? Cyber gangs craft alarming scenarios to exploit psychological vulnerabilities, prompting victims to react impulsively. They employ tactics like humiliation, threats of legal action, and impersonate official agencies (CBI, NCB, Cyber Cell, MHA, etc.) to demand sensitive information such as Aadhaar, PAN, and OTP, ultimately using it to extort money. According to the police, there is no need to panic upon receiving such messages or phone calls. Police or government departments do not send official communication via WhatsApp. Only verified sources should be trusted — emails must be checked for domains like . or . Sensitive details such as Aadhaar numbers, OTPs, and passwords should never be shared. The police advise reporting such incidents immediately to the cybercrime helpline 1930 or via the website Decisions should not be made out of fear. Recognising scams is the first step toward protection. Falling victim to cyber fraud is often a result of lack of awareness, not illiteracy. In unclear situations, it is essential to think critically and avoid taking any action without verifying official information. First Published:

Officials told to spread awareness about ‘doorstep ration delivery for elderly'

Pushpa Amarnath, Vice-Chairperson, Karnataka State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee, said on Wednesday that provisions are in place for doorstep delivery of ration to cardholders aged 80 years and above and instructed Gram Panchayats to create awareness and ensure that eligible beneficiaries avail themselves of the facility. Speaking at the guarantee schemes' progress review meeting in Pandavapura, Ms. Amarnath addressed concerns related to the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. She noted that benefits to 1,422 women in the district had been withheld after being mistakenly flagged as Income Tax (IT) or GST payers. 'If it is confirmed that these beneficiaries are not actual taxpayers, the issue will be taken up at the State level and resolved, ensuring 100% implementation,' she said. Elaborating on the State government's commitment to food security, she said, 'No poor person should suffer from hunger under any circumstances. It is with this vision that the government has given top priority to the Anna Bhagya scheme.' She stressed that fair price shops must maintain both quantity and quality in food distribution and instructed officials to carry out surprise inspections to ensure compliance. 'No poor family should be denied government benefits,' Ms. Amarnath said. Deputy Commissioner Kumar said both rice and ragi are being supplied as part of the ration distribution and assured that the process will be completed within the next two days. A PAN card is not mandatory to open a bank account, he clarified. 'Necessary directions will be issued after consulting lead bank officials,' he added. Referring to 1,422 women flagged under Gruha Lakshmi, Zilla Panchayat CEO K.R. Nandini said that confirmation has been received from the GST and Income Tax departments that these women are not taxpayers. Committee member Rudrappa pointed out that linking PAN and Aadhaar during bank transactions is leading to incorrect classification of individuals as taxpayers, which needs to be addressed. During her visit, Ms. Amarnath met Jayalakshmamma, a vendor who sells flowers, fruits, and pooja items at the Pandavapura Railway Station with the help of the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. Ms. Jayalakshmamma said, 'The Gruha Lakshmi and Shakti schemes have been helpful for me. I am able to save ₹100 to ₹150 daily, thanks to the Shakti scheme. I sincerely thank the State government for the support.' The Vice-Chairperson felicitated Ms. Jayalakshmamma with a garland and congratulated her.

Applying for PAN Card? Aadhaar to be mandatory for Permanent Account Number; new rule likely from July 1, 2025

The income tax portal will implement new PAN Card application requirements starting July. Applying for a new PAN Card? From July 1, 2025 the Central Board of Direct Taxes intends to implement mandatory Aadhaar authentication for obtaining new Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards. At present, individuals can apply for a PAN using their name, birth date proof or alternative identification documents. "The move for Aadhaar-based verification aligns with the digitalisation drive and efforts to ensure accountability and compliance in tax filing," a senior official told ET. New PAN Card Rules 2025 This means that if you apply for a new PAN Card after July 1, 2025, it will be compulsory for you to have an Aadhaar card. Your Aadhaar card will be used for verification purposes to process your PAN card application. The income tax portal will implement new application requirements starting July. It's important to note that current PAN holders must also link their cards with Aadhaar. The deadline for existing cardholders to connect Aadhaar with PAN without incurring penalties is December 31, 2025. Any PAN cards not linked to Aadhaar will cease to function from the following year. The Income Tax department mandated Aadhaar linkage after discovering individuals obtaining multiple PANs or using others' PANs for tax evasion purposes. Several instances revealed the misuse of multiple PANs for fraudulent GST registrations. As of March 2024, India had over 740 million PAN cardholders, with 605 million having completed their Aadhaar linkage. Karnataka high court for integrated death records to curb property fraud

Bengaluru: Karnataka high court has proposed a robust integrated IT framework for the registrar of births and deaths, aimed at preventing manipulation of death records for fraudulent property claims. Justice Suraj Govindaraj, in a recent order, directed that the system must interface seamlessly with revenue department and sub-registrar's databases to automatically fetch property details when a death-related application is filed. He instructed principal secretaries of e-governance, revenue and urban development departments to develop a comprehensive implementation plan for the IT system within six weeks. The aim, the court said, is to establish a transparent and foolproof digital mechanism that prevents misuse of death certificates in property-related disputes. The court underscored that the new system should not only fetch land and asset records of the deceased but also cross-reference hospital death data and identity documents like PAN, Aadhaar and voter ID cards to reinforce authenticity. The directive came during the hearing of a decades-old property dispute that brought to the fore a questionable death certificate issued nearly four decades after the purported date of demise. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Откриване на нов магазин, супер 2-в-1 таблет: 50% отстъпка HL Купете сега Undo According to court records, Siddalingaiah had purchased land from Honnamma in April 1979. In 2013, Mahadevaiah claiming to be Honnamma's grandson approached Lok Adalat seeking a death certificate stating she had passed away on June 15, 1975, four years before the sale took place. Following the Lok Adalat's order, the deputy tahsildar issued the death certificate in Jan 2014. Suspecting foul play, Siddalingaiah challenged it. After his death, his legal heirs continued the legal battle, arguing that Honnamma passed away in 1985 — well after the land transaction. Justice Govindaraj found several procedural lapses in the case, observing that only the deputy tahsildar had been made a party to Mahadevaiah's application and that the official remained absent during proceedings. More importantly, the court clarified that Lok Adalat cannot issue directions in the nature of judicial orders without proper adjudication and must limit itself to recording settlement terms between all affected parties. "Any matter referred to the Lok Adalat must involve the consent of all parties and undergo due verification by the magistrate concerned," the judge said. Quashing the death certificate issued in 2014, the high court remitted the matter to the appropriate court in Tumakuru for fresh proceedings, ensuring that Siddalingaiah's family members are included in the deliberations. In a wider directive, the court laid down stringent requirements for processing delayed applications under Section 13 of Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969. Applicants must state the reason for the delay, purpose of the application and provide comprehensive information on the deceased's properties, transactions and all legal heirs. Wherever possible, a medical certificate indicating the date, time and cause of death must also be furnished, it said.
