Applying for PAN Card? Aadhaar to be mandatory for Permanent Account Number; new rule likely from July 1, 2025
The income tax portal will implement new PAN Card application requirements starting July.
Applying for a new PAN Card? From July 1, 2025 the Central Board of Direct Taxes intends to implement mandatory Aadhaar authentication for obtaining new Permanent Account Number (PAN) cards.
At present, individuals can apply for a PAN using their name, birth date proof or alternative identification documents.
"The move for Aadhaar-based verification aligns with the digitalisation drive and efforts to ensure accountability and compliance in tax filing," a senior official told ET.
New
PAN Card Rules 2025
This means that if you apply for a new PAN Card after July 1, 2025, it will be compulsory for you to have an Aadhaar card. Your Aadhaar card will be used for verification purposes to process your PAN card application.
The income tax portal will implement new application requirements starting July.
It's important to note that current PAN holders must also link their cards with Aadhaar. The deadline for existing cardholders to connect Aadhaar with PAN without incurring penalties is December 31, 2025. Any PAN cards not linked to Aadhaar will cease to function from the following year.
The
Income Tax department
mandated Aadhaar linkage after discovering individuals obtaining multiple PANs or using others' PANs for tax evasion purposes.
Several instances revealed the misuse of multiple PANs for fraudulent GST registrations. As of March 2024, India had over 740 million PAN cardholders, with 605 million having completed their Aadhaar linkage.

Meanwhile, the I-T department is rolling out the PAN 2.0 project, which is an advancement in digitalising the PAN and TAN administrative framework. The enhanced system seeks to deliver superior taxpayer services through unified platforms, ensuring streamlined operations for individuals holding PAN/TAN credentials.
Existing PAN cardholders can continue using their cards without any additional steps under the new framework. The current PAN cards maintain their validity and functionality within PAN 2.0.

Truth Social crashes minutes after US Strikes Iran: Here's Donald Trump's 'Live-post' that likely caused the outage
Source: X Truth Social malfunctioned reportedly went down minutes after President Donald Trump's announcement that the United States had bombed Iran's nuclear facilities. As per screenshots shared on social media platforms, starting around 8 pm ET on Saturday (June 21), attempts to load the social network displayed error messages saying: 'Network failed,' 'Please try again.' For those unaware, Truth Social is owned by Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). DownDetector, a website that crowdsources service outages, saw an influx of reports of Truth Social going down around 8 pm. The reason for the apparent outage was not immediately clear. NetBlocks , which monitors internet accessibility, posted on BlueSky just before 9 pm ET: 'Truth Social is experiencing international outages for many users after US President Donald Trump announces strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran; incident not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering.' Likely cause of Truth Social outage Reports suggest that Truth Social started facing issues soon after Trump posted first update on the Iran attack. Trump posted around 7.46 pm ET that the United States had entered Israel's war against Iran stating that the US had waged a 'very successful attack on the three Nuclear sites in Iran, including Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan.' Some screenshots suggest API congestion as the cause of the disruption. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo All planes are now outside of Iran air space. Trump frequently shares posts to Truth Social about issues of national and international importance. The president appeared to post multiple times after news of the US bombings against Iran were first announced. A significant portion of Trump's net worth is reportedly derived from his stake in TMTG, Truth Social's parent company. According to a report in Wired, earlier this week, Truth Social reportedly sent an email to at least some users encouraging them to follow Trump's account. The email read in part, 'If you aren't following President Donald J. Trump on Truth Social, you're missing an essential resource for navigating world affairs today.' AI Masterclass for Students. Delhi: 2 held for GST fraud in Haryana, UP
Two members of a syndicate were arrested for generating fake Goods and Services Tax (GST) invoices to the tune of crores of rupees using PAN cards and mobile phone numbers of several people, police said on Saturday. The accused also replaced the contact details of genuine GST-registered firms on the website of the GST department and used them to generate false invoices, police said. Police are investigating the syndicate. (Representational image) The accused were identified as Inderpal Singh, 45, who is a lawyer, and his associate Sandeep Kumar, 27. The complaint in this case was registered recently by a businessman who said that when he applied for GST registration for his firm, he discovered that two GST numbers had already been issued on his PAN card without his knowledge. 'The fraudsters also acquired SIM cards using the complainant's Aadhaar card. We registered a case of impersonation, cheating, forgery, and criminal conspiracy and started an investigation,' said deputy commissioner of police (southwest) Amit Goel. Police approached the GST department and acquired the details of the two firms for which GST numbers had been issued using the complainant's PAN card. Police found that the two firms' listed addresses were fake. Police managed to track down one of the accused through technical surveillance and manual verification, and arrested Sandeep Kumar from Panipat in Haryana. Kumar revealed that he was an employee of Inderpal Singh, and they created bogus firms, police said. Police then arrested Singh from Shamli in Uttar Pradesh, the DCP said. 'They obtained details of firms registered under the GST Act from other members of the syndicate. Their associates provided them with the login details of the firms. After logging into the accounts on the GST department's website, the accused replaced the email IDs and phone numbers linked to the firms with their own. Then they contacted those who needed GST bills, and issued fake bills on the names of these firms. Inderpal revealed that he procured details of GST-registered firms from his associate by paying ₹ 25,000 to ₹ 30,000. His earnings were in lakhs of rupees through the cyber fraud,' added DCP Goel. Three smartphones, one laptop and a pen drive used by the accused to commit the cyber fraud were recovered, police said.

Advance tax collection growth slows to 3.9%, income tax mop-up lower than FY25 level
Advance direct tax collections from the first installment in the current financial year 2025-26 grew by 3.87 per cent to Rs 1.56 lakh crore as on June 19 this year, slower than the growth of 27.34 per cent seen in the same period a year ago, data released Saturday by the Income Tax Department showed. While advance tax collections during April 1-June 19 for corporate tax grew 5.86 per cent to Rs 1.22 lakh crore, personal income tax or non-corporate tax collections recorded a slowdown, with advance collections falling by 2.68 per cent to Rs 33,928.32 crore. The advance tax collections for personal income at Rs 33,928.32 crore are lower than the first installment collections of Rs 34,863.78 crore seen in the previous financial year 2024-25 (as on June 19, 2024). The slower growth in advance tax collections for personal income tax seems to be more pronounced, a possible indication of the impact of the income tax cuts undertaken in the Budget as well as slowing income growth. Non-corporate tax includes taxes paid by individuals, Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs), firms, Association of Persons (AoPs), Body of Individuals (Bols), local authorities, artificial juridical persons. Every person, whose estimated tax liability for the financial year is Rs 10,000 or more, is required to pay his or her taxes in advance in the form of 'advance tax'. The advance tax has to be paid in four installments during the year. The first installment has to be paid on or before June 15 with payment of not less than 15 per cent of the advance tax. The second installment has to be paid on or before September 15 with 45 per cent advance tax as reduced by the amount paid in the earlier installment. The third installment requires 75 per cent to be paid on or before December 15, followed by 100 per cent payment on or before March 15. Overall, growth in net direct tax collections so far until June 19 also slipped into negative territory, declining 1.39 per cent to Rs 4.59 lakh crore from Rs 4.65 lakh crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. The net collections were lower as refunds increased by 58 per cent to Rs 86,385 crore until June 19 this year. Gross direct tax collections, however, rose 4.86 per cent to Rs 5.45 lakh crore this fiscal. Net corporate tax collections slowed to Rs 1.73 lakh crore, down 5.13 per cent from the year-ago period. Personal income tax or non-corporate tax collections increased marginally by 0.7 per cent to Rs 2.73 lakh crore. Securities Transaction Tax (STT) increased by 12 per cent to Rs 13,013 crore during the period.
