According to a statement from JIM Sarawak, the operation, conducted around midnight by 11 officers from JIM Sarawak's Special Action Team (PTK), aimed to curb vice and illegal activities, particularly those involving foreign workers without valid work permits. 'Among the offences identified were misuse of visit passes, lack of valid travel documents, and overstaying beyond the permitted period,' the statement said. According to the department, some individuals attempted to flee during the operation. 'They tried to escape into nearby forested areas, but their efforts were successfully thwarted,' it added. All detained foreign nationals have been placed in the Immigration Detention Depot for investigation and further action under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963. MIRI (May 10): Forty foreign nationals were detained by the Immigration Department during an 'Ops Gegar', carried out on an entertainment centre at Jalan Kubu here on Friday night. The raid, which kicked off at 8pm, involved 29 Immigration Department enforcement officers, who were assisted by Miri police. According to Immigration spokesperson, a total of 50 individuals were screened, comprising 40 foreigners and 10 locals. 'Of those screened, seven men and 33 women were detained for allegedly committing various immigration offences, including overstaying beyond the permitted period; not possessing valid travel documents; and misusing social visit passes for employment purposes.' The detained foreigners included 19 from China, 13 from Vietnam, seven from Indonesia, and one from the Philippines. 'At the time of the raid and arrest, all of the suspects were working at the entertainment premises,' it added. Selangor Immigration director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said those detained comprised a woman each from Thailand, Vietnam and Morocco, who worked as a waitress, as well as 16 male workers from Myanmar and four from Bangladesh. 'All those detained are aged between 22 and 44 and have worked here for over six months. Some tried to avoid detection either by hiding in cupboards or pretending to be customers during the raid, but to no avail,' he said in a statement today.

"All those detained are aged between 22 and 44 and have worked here for over six months. Some tried to avoid detection either by hiding in cupboards or pretending to be customers during the raid, but to no avail," he said in a statement on Saturday (April 26). He added that all those arrested are believed to have entered Malaysia via the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Bukit Kayu Hitam, with the help of agents. He said 18 Selangor Immigration officers inspected 37 individuals during the raids at 6 pm and a Summons to Witness was issued to a Malaysian during the operations. All those detained have been sent to the Semenyih Immigration Depot and the case is being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 and Regulation 39(b) Immigration Regulations 1963. - Bernama
