CISF Expands Fire Safety Training, Targets 380 Firefighters Across 22 States And UTs

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has launched a nationwide fire training program, as announced by the Union Home Minister during the CISF Raising Day 2023. The program aims to train firefighters from 100 Indian cities to boast the country's fire safety capabilities. In a significant step towards enhancing fire safety across the country, the CISF has been conducting specialised training programs for state fire service personnel. In 2025, five additional batches were allocated, out of which four have already been completed, benefiting 106 participants from 46 cities across 10 states and the fifth session is scheduled to begin on August 25. In this upcoming session, the program aims to train 380 firefighters from 150 cities across 22 States and Union Territories. Meanwhile, the CISF has also expressed readiness to accommodate additional training slots in the 2025 calendar, should states be willing to nominate more firefighters for the course. "As the only CAPF with a dedicated Fire Wing, the CISF is committed to enhancing the technical skills of fire personnel and fostering a proactive culture for fire safety and disaster management preparedness. Our training programs are continuously updated to reflect the latest in fire safety research and practices, ensuring our firefighters are equipped not only for timely emergency response but also for prevention," a CISF spokesperson said in an official release. As per the release, the fire safety training program is designed to enhance capabilities in modern firefighting, rescue operations and critical disaster management. It covers advanced areas such as cutting-edge fire response strategies, preparedness for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) emergencies and the handling of chemical warfare agents.

India believed to have 'slightly expanded' nuclear arsenal in 2024: Report

Nearly all of the nine nuclear-armed states, including India and Pakistan, continued intensive nuclear modernisation programmes in 2024, upgrading existing weapons and adding newer versions, according to a report by a global think-tank. India is believed to have once again "slightly expanded" its nuclear arsenal in 2024 and continued to develop new types of nuclear delivery systems, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said in a statement. Pakistan also continued to develop new delivery systems and "accumulate fissile material" in 2024, suggesting that its nuclear arsenal might expand over the coming decade, it said. The think-tank on Monday launched its annual assessment of the state of armaments, disarmament and international security in SIPRI Yearbook 2025. The statement on the release of its yearbook also makes a reference to the recent military conflict between India and Pakistan. The four-day military confrontation between the two nuclear-armed neighbours in May brought the two countries to the brink of full-scale war. The SIPRI Yearbook provided a country-wise assessment of the state of armaments, disarmament and international security. "Nearly all of the nine nuclear-armed states -- the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea) and Israel --continued intensive nuclear modernisation programmes in 2024, upgrading existing weapons and adding newer versions," the statement said. Of the total global inventory of an estimated 12,241 warheads in January 2025, about 9,614 were in "military stockpiles for potential use", it claimed. "India is believed to have once again slightly expanded its nuclear arsenal in 2024 and continued to develop new types of nuclear delivery system," it said. "India's new 'canisterised' missiles, which can be transported with mated warheads, may be capable of carrying nuclear warheads during peacetime, and possibly even multiple warheads on each missile, once they become operational," the think-tank claimed. In early 2025 tensions between India and Pakistan briefly spilled over into armed conflict, it said. The combination of strikes and third-party disinformation "risked turning a conventional conflict into a nuclear crisis," Matt Korda, Associate Senior Researcher with SIPRI's Weapons of Mass Destruction Programme and Associate Director for the Nuclear Information Project at FAS (Federation of American Scientists), was quoted as saying in the statement. "This should act as a stark warning for states seeking to increase their reliance on nuclear weapons," he said. The think-tank further said since the end of the Cold War, the gradual dismantlement of retired warheads by Russia and the USA has normally outstripped the deployment of new warheads, resulting in an overall year-on-year decrease in the global inventory of nuclear weapons. "This trend is likely to be reversed in the coming years, as the pace of dismantlement is slowing, while the deployment of new nuclear weapons is accelerating," it cautioned. Key findings of SIPRI Yearbook 2025 are that a "dangerous new nuclear arms race" is emerging at a time when arms control regimes are "severely weakened," it claimed. Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth says Trump still aiming for nuclear deal with Iran

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told Fox News on Monday that President Donald Trump was still aiming for a nuclear deal with Iran even as hostilities have escalated between US ally Israel and Tehran, while a White House aide said separately that Washington was not attacking Iran. 'Of course,' Hegseth said on Fox News' 'Jesse Watters Primetime' show when asked if Trump was still aiming for a nuclear deal with Iran. 'We are postured defensively in the region to be strong in pursuit of a peace deal. And we certainly hope that's what happens here,' Hegseth said. In a social media post on Monday, Trump said 'Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran,' citing what he said was the country's rejection of a deal to curb nuclear weapons development. Israel attacked Iran on Friday and since then the two Middle Eastern rivals have exchanged blows, with Iranian officials reporting over 220 deaths, mostly civilians, in five days while Israel said 24 civilians had been killed. Israel says it aims to eliminate what it calls threats posed by Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons and has pointed to its right to nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including enrichment, as a party to the Nuclear. Israel, which is not a party to the NPT, is the only country in the Middle East widely believed to have nuclear weapons. Israel does not deny or confirm that. The air war between Iran and Israel has raised further alarms in a region that had already been on edge since the start of Israel's military assault on Gaza in October 2023. Washington has thus far maintained it is not involved in Israeli attacks on Iran and warned Tehran not to attack US interests or personnel in the region. 'We're vigilant, we're prepared, and we have messaged … consistently from the beginning that we're in the region to defend our people and our assets,' Hegseth said on Fox News. White House aide Alex Pfeiffer took to social media platform X to deny online claims that the US was attacking Iran. 'This is not true. American forces are maintaining their defensive posture, and that has not changed,' Pfeiffer said.
