'William has key priority he'd never put in jeopardy - despite any criticism'
Prince William is marking a special day today as he celebrates turning 43 - and it comes after he puts what he described as a 'brutal' year behind him From tackling climate change and saving the oceans to trying to solve the homelessness crisis, Prince William seems to be a man on a mission. In recent months the Prince of Wales has been carrying out work linked to a range of causes close to his heart - including mental health and the climate crisis - combining it with the pomp and pageantry of royal events such as Trooping the Colour and the ancient Order of the Garter ceremony. But today, he will surely be swapping any work matters for precious family time with the Princess of Wales and their children as he celebrates his 43rd birthday. A year ago, William was in a very different place, as wife Kate was still undergoing chemotherapy treatment after her cancer diagnosis. At the same time, his father the King has also been diagnosed with the disease. Not only was he on hand to support them both, but he also proved to be a rock for his three children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. He memorably described 2024 as "brutal" and significantly one of the "hardest of his life". But with Kate now in remission, things look different 12 months on as he turns a year older, focus shifts slightly to duty. In the past week, not only has he been at Trooing and Garter Day but also Royal Ascot and carried out a visit alongside actress Cate Blanchett to Colorifix - a Norwich-based company which creates sustainable dye for clothing, and is one of his Earthshot Prize finalists. And former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond tells the Mirror that William is "extremely serious" when it comes to the job that his life has given him. She explained: "As he himself has said, if he can't make some kind of difference, some kind of impact on issues he cares so deeply about – then what is the point of being a prince or of having such a high profile platform? "So, now that the crisis of the past 18 months has eased, he seems to be working pretty much flat out for much of the time, and I'm sure that will continue." But despite his work and duty, there is one thing that always comes first for William as well as wife Kate - family. William is a very hands-on parent, doing the school run and ferrying the kids to their various after-school sports clubs and activities. Putting family first was no more so evident than at Easter earlier this year when he and his family skipped the traditional Easter Sunday church service with the King and Queen at Windsor to spend precious family time together - all with the King's blessing. And even if his schedule may seem busier, Jennie believes this family time is something William will always make a priority. She said: "These years are a period when, without the never-ending state duties of a monarch, he can be allowed to concentrate rather more fully on his wife and children. So I think school holidays will continue to be ring-fenced as much as possible, even if he is criticised for doing so. "You just have to look at the pictures of William and his children released for Father's Day to see how much they adore him and how close they are as a family. This tall, handsome, smiling man is their dad and their protector. And William would never want to put that in any jeopardy." It's not known exactly what type of birthday celebration will be in store for William today - but no doubt it will involve Kate and the kids. Last year, Kate shared an incredible photo of her husband and three children leaping over sand dunes in Norfolk with the message: "Happy birthday Papa, we all love you so much! Cx" His father the King also shared a baby photo of the Prince sitting on his lap. And Jennie added: "His birthday is on a Saturday this year, so there'll be a chance for a family celebration. I doubt it will be anything particularly grand - it's more likely they'll enjoy a family barbecue and a romp around the garden or beach."

The Princess of Wales has shared an adorable new photo to mark husband Prince William's birthday. The Prince of Wales turns 43 today and to celebrate, the official Kensington Royal account posted a picture of him posing with the family dog Orla - and her new puppies. The black cocker spaniel - gifted to the family by Kate's brother James Middleton in 2020 - recently gave birth to four puppies. The photo of William, Orla and her brood was taken by the Princess in Windsor earlier this month. The caption reads: "Happy birthday! Love C, G, C, L, Orla and the puppies!" King Charles and Queen Camilla have also wished William a happy birthday. The couple posted a photo on their official Instagram page that shows him smiling widely while sat on a rock wall. Hospice charity submits plans for care facility
A hospice charity has submitted plans to develop an end-of-life care facility in a coastal town 18 years after fundraising began. Yare Hospice Care launched in 2007, changing its name to East Coast Hospice two years later. In 2023 the charity merged with St Elizabeth Hospice, based in Ipswich. The charity says it wants to build a community hospice with 16 beds on its site at Sidegate Lane in Gorleston near Great Yarmouth. Judi Newman, chief executive of St Elizabeth Hospice, said: "We are delighted to submit this planning application and share our full plans with the wider community." Plans to build a hospice between Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth have stalled for almost two decades as rival charities competed over plans, sites and funding. The community was split over supporting the James Paget University Hospital wanting to build a hospice at the Louise Hamilton Cancer Centre, within its site or the independent East Coast Hospice, which had land and won planning consent for a 10-bed unit. After the NHS withdrew its plans, East Coast Hospice merged with St Elizabeth which immediately conducted a feasibility study which found a hospice was needed to help patients in Great Yarmouth and Waveney. It said the previous plans were not suitable to the needs identified in its report, and it appointed Norwich-based LSI Architects. The proposed unit would feature 16 inpatient beds, an outpatient and community hub for day care and therapies as well as a community café. Roberta Lovick, ambassador for the Louise Hamilton Trust, said: "The strength of our partnership will help us achieve our vision of bringing greater parity to end-of-life care in Great Yarmouth and Waveney. "When my daughter Louise died in 1998, I vowed to dedicate my life to improving end-of-life care in this community and across the country, and this project, alongside St Elizabeth Hospice, is a significant step toward that goal. "This is something we know the community wants and needs. This community hospice building will make a drastic difference to so many people, improving local end-of-life care, giving people more options and support during their precious remaining time with loved ones." Ms Newman added: "We are delighted to submit this planning application and share our full plans with the wider community. "With the invaluable support of Roberta Lovick and the Louise Hamilton Trust, we are in a strong position to develop the community hospice sustainably in a single phase." Ed Garratt, chief executive at Norfolk and Waveney ICB (N&W ICB), said: "This is a hugely welcome development, which aligns with our ambitions to enhance palliative and end-of-life care in our region. "I wholeheartedly support this shared commitment from the voluntary sector, NHS and community in working together to improve services for the local population." Combined with soaring business rates, energy and rental costs, some retailers have been forced to hike prices and even shut stores. It's worth bearing in mind of course that retailers close shops for a host of reasons and not always because of a poor economic backdrop. Sometimes chains will shut a poorly-performing branch in one area and open another further afield where they think they'll see better footfall. In any case, five shops will shut this weekend including a more than 120-year-old department store. Here is the full list of shops we know are closing down permanently. Ginger Norwich-based Ginger will pull down its shutters for the final time on Saturday. But current store manager Beckie Kingsley said the store will close due to the economic climate and aftermath of Covid-19. Daniel of Ealing Historic department store Daniel of Ealing, in London, will shut for good on Sunday, after opening 124 years ago. Prices have been slashed across homeware, fashion, toys, sportswear and shoes, with up to 50% off. Shoppers finding out the iconic shop will close have shared their dismay online. Advertisement One posted saying: "Loved this shop and it's top floor restaurant." While another added: "Ealing has lost its heart, soul and uniqueness!" The Works Stationer The Works is shutting its Margate store on Sunday, with shoppers' next nearest branches in Westwood Cross Shopping Centre or Ramsgate Garden Centre. A spokesperson for the chain said the decision to shut the branch had been made "as part of ongoing plans to optimise our store portfolio". Advertisement The move has been met with sadness by shoppers, with one online stating: "No I love The Works." Another dejectedly added: "Be nothing left in the town soon." Emporium Worthing Independent bar and shop Emporium Worthing is closing to the public on Sunday "with a heavy heart". The owners posted a lengthy statement on Facebook announcing the closure. Advertisement It said: "We share the challenging decision to close Emporium Worthing after five memorable years of serving you. "This has been a tough choice for us, but after careful reflection, we believe it is the best path forward and the right choice for us at this time." A huge closing down sale has been launched to clear stock, even including fixtures and fittings from inside. It's not all bad news though as the Emporium will be moving online and selling hardwares. Advertisement New Look New Look is closing its branch in the Northfield Shopping Centre, Birmingham, on June 8. A picture recently posted on Facebook of the shop window advertised the closure and signposted customers to the retailer's website. Customers finding out about the closure have been left gutted. One posted on Facebook: "Will soon be a ghost town, absolutely nothing left." Advertisement Another commented: "Online (retail) is killing shops." A New Look spokesperson said: "We would like to thank all of our colleagues and the local community for their support over the years. "We hope customers continue to shop with us online at where our full product ranges can be found." RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs would cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research published by the British Chambers of Commerce earlier this year shows that more than half of companies planned to raise prices by early April. Separately, the Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."
