Rangpur Riders sign Iftikhar, Akif, and Nafay for 2025 Global Super League
Defending champions Rangpur Riders have confirmed the inclusion of three Pakistani cricketers — Iftikhar Ahmed, Akif Javed and Khawaja Nafay — in their squad for the 2025 edition of the Guyana Global Super League (GSL), scheduled to take place from 10 to 18 July at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The trio will be making their debut in the GSL. Veteran all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed brings experience from previous stints in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) and Lanka Premier League (LPL), while left-arm pacer Akif Javed also has LPL exposure. Middle-order batter Khawaja Nafay, meanwhile, has played in two seasons of the BPL. Rangpur will be looking to replicate their dramatic success from the 2024 GSL, when they rebounded from three initial defeats to win their final three matches and claim the trophy. A consistent force in the BPL — where they were crowned champions in 2017 — the Riders have retained several core players for the GSL, including captain Hasan and top-order batter Soumya Sarkar, the leading run-scorer in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Fast bowler Kamrul Islam Rabbi, who spearheaded the bowling attack last season, also returns. The full 16-man squad features a mix of domestic talent and overseas signings, including Kyle Mayers, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has granted No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to 13 players for participation in overseas franchise leagues. Among them, Nafay has received his NOC for the GSL, while approvals for Iftikhar and Akif Javed are reportedly pending. Other Pakistani players set to feature in the tournament include Mohammad Nawaz, Sahibzada Farhan and Saud Shakeel. According to the finalised squad lists, Shakeel will play for the Guyana Amazon Warriors, while Nawaz and Farhan have been signed by the Hobart Hurricanes. As of now, official NOCs have been issued for Nafay and Nawaz, with Saud and Farhan awaiting clearance. Full Squad Lists Rangpur Riders – GSL 2025: Nurul Hasan Sohan (capt), Soumya Sarkar, Mohammed Naim Sheikh, Mahidul Islam Ankon, Kamrul Islam Rabbi, Mohammed Saif Hassan, Abu Haider Rony, Rakibul Hasan, Yasir Ali Chowdhury, Kyle Mayers, Tabraiz Shamsi, Ibrahim Zadran, Iftikhar Ahmed, Akif Javed, Harmeet Singh, Khawaja Nafay. Himachal HC quashes NOC rejection, allows doctor to join Super Specialty Course
Shimla, June 19 (UNI) In a significant judgment benefiting medical professionals, the Himachal Pradesh High Court has quashed the state government's decision to deny a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to Dr. Pankaj Sharma, a Senior Resident at Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru Government Medical College (PJLNGMC), Chamba, for pursuing a super specialty course in Medical Oncology. Justice Sandeep Sharma, in an order passed on June 17, directed the state authorities to issue the NOC and release Dr. Sharma's original MBBS degree by 12 noon on June 18, 2025. The court further allowed the petitioner to join the course at Paras Hospital, Punjab, on the condition that he deposits Rs 40 lakh as bond money within a week and furnishes a written undertaking. Dr. Sharma, currently serving as a Tutor Specialist/Senior Resident in Chamba, had applied for an NOC to join the Diplomate of National Board Super Specialty (DNB SS) course after clearing the national entrance examination. However, his request was denied by the Director of Health Services on the ground that he had not completed the mandatory one-year field posting after his postgraduate studies. The court held that Dr. Sharma had already served more than one year and nine months across different postings, including Chamba and Nahan. It observed that under the amended PG policy, the field posting requirement is waived for doctors serving in new government medical colleges. The judge added that denying the NOC on the basis of doctor shortage could not override the petitioner's right to career advancement. Citing earlier verdicts, including Ajay Kumar Chauhan v. State of HP and Lovdeep Singh case, the court reiterated that unwilling employees cannot be forced to serve, and bond terms must allow for either service or financial compensation. The court clarified that if Dr. Sharma fails to rejoin government service after the course or defaults on his bond terms, the deposited amount would be forfeited without interest, and legal action may follow. This order is expected to guide similar cases pending before the High Court and marks a balancing act between individual aspirations and state service obligations. UNI ML RN

TG seeks NOC from Jal Shakti Ministry and A.P. for utilisation of 1,500 tmc ft in Godavari and Krishna
The Telangana Government has sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Union Jal Shakti Ministry and neighbouring Andhra Pradesh allowing it to utilise 1,000 tmc ft of Godavari and 500 tmc ft of Krishna water. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil to ensure that the Central Government gives its consent for the NOC allowing Telangana to utilise 1,500 tmc ft water as it would suffice to realise the goal of irrigating 1.5 crore acres of land. 'We have no objection if the Centre examines the clearances for projects proposed by Andhra Pradesh after allocating 1,500 tmc ft water from the two rivers,' the Chief Minister told the Union Minister. He termed as inappropriate the Centre's attitude in responding speedily to the projects proposed by the neighbouring State and neglecting Telangana's projects. This would give scope for apprehensions between the two States that could in turn lead to problematic situations, he said, seeking the Union Minister's cooperation in according clearances to Palamuru-Rangareddy, Tummidihatti and Sammakka-Sarakka projects at the earliest. Funds for Musi project The Centre should consider granting funds for the Musi rejuvenation project proposed by the Telangana Government on the lines of similar projects taken up on Ganga and Yamuna rivers. Irrigation Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, who briefed reporters after the meeting, said that the Jal Shakti Minister responded positively to the State's request. Mr. Patil told the Chief Minister and the Irrigation Minister that the Centre was yet to receive the detailed project report pertaining to the Godavari-Banakacharla project. The Union Minister also assured the State delegation that he would take the initiative in convening the meeting of the Apex Council headed by him and comprising the Chief Ministers of the two Telugu States as members soon.

PVR INOX multiplex at Chennai airport's Aerohub faces closure due to legal dispute
The five-screen PVR INOX multiplex operating at the Aerohub, a commercial space attached to the multi-level car park (MLCP) in Chennai airport, is facing a threat of closure since the Airports Authority of India (AAI) had taken a stand that operation of a cinema hall is not a permissible activity under the AAI Act of 1994. Justice N. Anand Venkatesh of the Madras High Court has, however, directed the AAI to maintain status quo until the authority considers and disposes of, in accordance with law, a representation made to it by PVR Inox on May 29, 2025 seeking permission to continue its operations at the Aerohub. The direction was issued after Additional Solicitor General AR.L. Sundaresan, assisted by AAI standing counsel Ramaswamy Meyyappan, told the court that AAI would certainly a take decision in line with Articles 41 and 42 of the MLCP development agreement and convey it to the multiplex chain. The orders were passed while disposing of a writ petition filed by PVR INOX to restrain AAI from interfering with the operation of the multiplex. Senior counsel P.S. Raman, representing the petitioner, told the court that AAI had invited tenders in 2017 for development of the MLCP with integrated commercial infrastructure at the Chennai airport. The dispute Olympia Techpark (Chennai) Private Limited turned out to be successful bidder and it floated a special purpose vehicle titled Meenambakkam Realty Private Limited which, in turn, entered into a development agreement with AAI in 2018 to develop, build, operate and maintain the facility for a period of 15 years. Thereafter, AAI obtained environment clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests in December 2018 and the application for environment clearance specifically included the area earmarked for the multiplex. Therefore, AAI was fully cognizant of the construction of cinema halls even as early as in 2018, Mr. Raman said. He added that AAI had also sanctioned the construction plans in 2019 and 2021 which had explicit mention about the cinema halls in the Aerohub and that in 2021, the authority had sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) too from the Greater Chennai City Commissioner of Police for the cinema halls. It was only on the basis of all these documents, PVR INOX had entered into a sub-licencing agreement with Meenambakkam Realty in November 2022 for operating the multiplex and commenced screening movies from February 1, 2023. The sub-licencing tenure was for a period of 13.5 years. However, on July 21, 2023, the AAI wrote a letter to Meenambakkam Realty stating it had been decided to close down the multiplex since running of cinema halls was not permissible under the AAI Act. The letter had been signed by Joint General Manager (Commercial) M. Selvanayagam on behalf of the Airport Director. Immediately, Meenambakkam Realty approached the Delhi High Court and obtained an interim order. Thereafter, an arbitral tribunal was constituted to resolve the dispute and the tribunal, in February 2024, stayed the operation of the July 2023 letter thereby providing interim protection to the developer. Premature termination Thereafter, the interim order was vacated and Meenambakkam Realty conveyed a startling information to PVR INOX on May 15, 2025 that its 2018 development agreement with AAI had been terminated prematurely and that AAI had decided to maintain the entire 2,47,202 square feet complex constructed on 4.5 acres of land on its own. However, since Articles 42 and 43 of the development agreement empowers AAI to permit sub-licencees to continue on mutually negotiable terms and conditions, PVR INOX had given a representation to the authority on May 29 to permit the operation of the multiplex dehors the termination of the agreement with Meenambakkam Realty.

Once in neglect, Channasandra lake gets second lease of life
Residents rejoice in the inaugural event as collaborative efforts to revive lake pays off Around 9 a.m. on Saturday, a crowd of around 100 took to the streets of Kasturinagar in East Bengaluru. Members of the Kasturinagar Welfare Association (KWA) and the residents danced, while women and children dressed in green and white were holding placards, as they made their way to the B. Channasandra lake. Once spanning about 19 acres in area, the lake over the years shrank to 6.3 acres due to neglect, dumping of garbage and construction debris, and sewage flowing in. As Bengaluru faced one of its worst droughts in 2023, the KWA and the residents united to revive the lake that had been long neglected. June 14 marked the formal inauguration of a revived B. Channasandra lake, which N. Ravindrakumar, Deputy Conservator of Forests, Bengaluru, termed as a testament to the work put in by the residents of Kasturinagar. The invite to the event, too, was along similar lines. 'When people come together, nature finds its way back,' he said. 'Initially, a group of 100 volunteers decided to contribute ₹1,000 every month as we began to work on the lake,' said Abhijith N.S., a KWA volunteer. Initial work involved desilting the lake using a tractor and heavy machinery as garbage was removed and the land was levelled along the waterbody. A compound wall was later built around the lake. As the project grew in size, KWA collaborated with Hands on CSR, an NGO that helped with funding, and CGI, a software company, that helped release CSI funds which was necessary to complete the project. Since the lake came under the Karnataka Forest Department, a No Objection Certificate (NOC) was issued by Mr. Ravindra Kumar as work began from October 11 last year. The excavation lasted around five weeks as further desilting and desludging were done. The estimated cost of the project totalled ₹1.15 crore with a three phased funding. The project faced a few challenges. 'Sometimes, we received threats from real estate agents who had their eye on the land, but thanks to the Forest Department, everything went smoothly. We aim to preserve and make this as a forest lake,' Mr. Abhijith said.
