Why many music fans are having more ‘remember when' conversations

Episode 15 of Season 6 of The Sopranos features a scene where Tony and Paulie are out for dinner with some friends. After Paulie's endless stories about the old days, Tony becomes irritated and declares that ''remember when' is the lowest form of conversation.' He then gets up and leaves in a low-level huff. It's understandable that some people find certain types of reminiscing annoying. They believe in living in the moment and looking forward to the future, not rehashing the past. Nostalgia was, in fact, a medical condition that described a particular kind of melancholy fused with sentimentality. Things got quite melancholic and nostalgic for me on Friday night when I attended a reunion of dozens of people who worked in Winnipeg radio over the decades. These were mentors, peers and followers from a time when AM radio still played music and FM had time to play 20-minute album tracks. There was even a special session entitled 'War Stories' where it was all 'remember when.' Much time was devoted to those who are no longer with us. Story continues below advertisement It's so easy to get lost in thoughts about 'the good old days' when life was simpler and so many possibilities lay ahead. The older we become, the more we have conversations that include the phrase 'remember when.' Music fans are not immune to this, of course, especially those getting on in years, increasing every time a rock star passes away. In the last 10 days, we lost funk/rock master Sly Stone, Beach Boy Brian Wilson and industrial dance pioneer Douglas McCarthy of Nitzer Ebb. 'Remember when Hot Fun in the Summertime blared out of AM radios during the hottest days of the year?' 'Remember when you heard Good Vibrations for the first time and your concept of music changed?' I confess to saying all those things over the past week. Those conversations dovetailed into other related topics. It's been a 'remember when' kind of time. Rock stars are supposed to be immortal. After all, the things they do seem superhuman, so why should they be subject to the frailties of human existence? How many millions (billions?) of people have lived their entire lives knowing that Brian Wilson walked the earth? It's constantly said that the world has gone downhill since David Bowie and Prince died in 2016. Story continues below advertisement But death, they say, is undefeated. It will come for all of us one day. In the not-too-distant future, there will be no more living Beatles. We'll never get to see a proper version of Fleetwood Mac onstage ever again. Bob Dylan will transition to become an ex-Dylan. Jimmy Page will no longer pick up a guitar. And the Rolling Stones will stop touring, Keith and Mick will shuffle off. It's sobering stuff, this slow-moving mass extinction event. 2:34 Lost Beatles demo discovered by Vancouver record shop owner Music fans will have no choice but to deal with the loss of so many of their heroes. All we'll be left with is our records and CDs, band T-shirts and 'remember when' memories. There will be new 'remember when' opportunities. ABBA's Voyage avatar continues to gross hundreds of millions at its purpose-built theatre in London. Kiss is set to join the singularity with a Las Vegas simulation. Virtual reality tech will continue to improve, too, allowing the estates of artists who have died (Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Buddy Holly, Ronnie James Dio, Roy Orbison et al.) to continue with productions featuring holograms fronting a live band. Story continues below advertisement There are other reasons this music will live on far longer than that of previous generations. Normally, an artist's popularity will peak, wane, and be forgotten as they're supplanted by the next generation of artists. Today, streaming is keeping older music alive far beyond its expected best-before date. Unlike their forebearers, today's music fans are extremely ecumenical in their tastes when it comes to era and genre. Is it a good song? Does it make them feel something? Then they'll listen. And then there's this: Over the past decade, companies with names like Primary Wave, Sony Music Entertainment and Concord Music have been buying up the publishing rights to the greatest music ever made. Billions of dollars have been spent acquiring these catalogues, resulting in some incredible payouts (I've been keeping track of them here). With the way copyright works, these companies have up to a hundred years (or longer!) to recoup their investments. How? By making sure these songs never slip from the public's consciousness and continue to generate revenue. Old songs that would have once been pushed aside by something new are now going to be heard for many decades to come. That means the original recordings, covers, samples, interpolations, and more. They will outlive their creators and the fans who remember when they were first released. Here's the brutal truth. If you have an opportunity to see a favourite older artist one more time, do it. You'll participate in a mass 'remember when' experience, plus you'll be able to say you saw them that last time.

Billboard Unfiltered is back with a reimagined format and will remain a live show every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. ET. Staff writer Kyle Denis, senior director R&B/hip-hop Carl Lamarre and senior charts analyst Trevor Anderson returned with new moderator Delisa Shannon on Wednesday (June 11) as the trio debated the early returns of Lil Wayne's Tha Carter VI, and all three skewed to various degrees of a negative reception to Weezy's latest installment in his decorated series. Although, CL believes that the disappointing album and his solo output over the last decade have watered down his discography. 'I need to fire whoever was A&R and executive producing my brother Wayne's album because this is easily the worst [Carter] in the entire series,' he claimed. '[C6] was just a full trainwreck… When you take out the mixtapes and look at pure albums. From one, five and six on Tha Carter is mid — everything else is mid.' Denis bluntly said C6 is 'not a good album at all' and 'a—.' 'He spent the last year begging for sympathy by him not getting the Super Bowl slot and he deserved that,' he said. 'This was the time to drop a fire album, get one or two hits off of that, and make your actual case for a Super Bowl headlining show next year. That's completely shot now because it's a—… You did not rise to the occasion.' Anderson seemed to enjoy the album most among the Unfiltered crew, highlighting the first six tracks as standouts before being derailed. 'I'm not gonna be that hard on it,' TA began. 'Clearly, it's the weakest entry in the canon… It didn't stick the landing for me… I don't know if this album really messes up [if Wayne is top five or top 10] for me… It does weaken Tha Carter series overall… But I don't think it messes up the legacy peg at all.' The conversation turned to Wayne's legacy and Lamarre believes every top 10 rapper should have at least three classic solo offerings, and he thinks Wayne has two with the second and third installments of Tha Carter, but not much else. 'I'm adamant about saying his [albums] discography is not as strong as people think,' he declared. Ultimately, the trio wants to see Wayne get back to the drawing board and lock in with a singular producer like Nas did with Hit-Boy to bring that greatness out of him. Douglas McCarthy, the co-founding vocalist of English industrial dance outfit Nitzer Ebb, has passed away at the age of 58. McCarthy's death was confirmed by Nitzer Ebb's official social media account on Tuesday (June 11). 'It is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform that Douglas McCarthy passed away this morning of June 11th, 2025,' a post read. McCarthy co-founded Nitzer Ebb in 1982 alongside school friends Vaughan 'Bon' Harris and David Gooday, with the group taking inspiration from the post-punk genre for their early single releases. That sound soon evolved with more industrial and electronic influences, with the band quickly becoming regarded as noted figures within the 'electronic body music' scene – a genre that combined elements of industrial and punk with dance music. The group's debut album, That Total Age, would be issued in May 1987, and though avoiding chart success, the single 'Join the Chant' would reach No. 9 on the Dance Club Songs charts. Nitzer Ebb would remain a fixture of the chart in the coming years, with singles such as 'Control I'm Here,' 'Lightning Man,' and 'Fun to Be Had' all appearing therein, with the latter giving the band their highest peak when it reached No. 5 in 1990. They would also impact the Alternative Airplay charts, with 1991's 'Family Man' giving them a career high when it reached No. 21. While 1991's Ebbhead would be their only record to reach the Billboard 200 (peaking at No. 146), their follow-up, 1995's Big Hit, would be the band's last for 15 years, with Nitzer Ebb splitting soon after its release. McCarthy would contribute to Recol, the solo project of Depeche Mode's Alan Wilder throughout the '90s, and later collaborate with French producer Terence Fixmer as one half of Fixmer/McCarthy. Nitzer Ebb would reform in 2006 and release their final album, Industrial Complex, in 2010. In 2013, McCarthy would release his only solo album, Kill Your Friends. In recent years, McCarthy had suffered from noted ill health, with Harris taking over vocals for a series of 2021 performances after McCarthy collapsed before a show due to a 'pre-existing' medical condition. In early 2024, McCarthy announced he would no longer be performing live after being diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver. Future handles chorus duties on the somber track, which finds the trio calming their mothers' worries, assuring them at their turbulent upbringings prepared them for the callousness of life. Douglas McCarthy, singer for electronic group Nitzer Ebb, dead at 58

Douglas McCarthy, the singer of the pioneering U.K. proto-industrial band Nitzer Ebb, has died. He was 58. The band confirmed the news on its social media accounts. It did not list a cause of death. 'It is with a heavy heart that we regret to inform that Douglas McCarthy passed away this morning of June 11th, 2025,' Nitzer Ebb wrote. 'We ask everyone to please be respectful of Douglas, his wife, and family in this difficult time. We appreciate your understanding and will share more information soon.' McCarthy founded the group Nitzer Ebb in Essex, with David Gooday and Bon Harris. The band released its first single, 'Isn't It Funny How Your Body Works,' in 1985, on its own independent Power of Voice Communications label. The band drew aesthetics from the experiments of post-punk and the nascent goth movement of the time, with admiration for sinister yet seductive acts like the Birthday Party, Bauhaus and Malaria. McCarthy and his bandmates paired that sensibility with the new potential of electronic music, crafting a harsh and antagonistic style that moved like club music but hit like punk. The style came to be known as EBM (electronic body music), and their 1987 Geffen debut LP, 'That Total Age,' played a formative role in the industrial wave to come, anticipating the rise of acts like Nine Inch Nails and Rammstein and, later, Cold Cave and Gesaffelstein. With howled, deadpan lyrics like on 'Join in the Chant,' McCarthy set a template for how punk's urgency could lock into dance music's meticulousness. Other cuts, like 'Let Your Body Learn,' became fixtures in acid house and techno DJ sets. The band followed it up with 1989's 'Belief,' with famed producer Flood, and released three more LP's before dissolving in 1995. McCarthy worked with former tour mate Depeche Mode's Alan Wilder on the side project Recoil, and collaborated with techno producer Terence Fixmer. McCarthy revived Nitzer Ebb in 2007 and released the return-to-form LP 'Industrial Complex' in 2010. McCarthy also released 'Kill Your Friends,' a solo album, in 2012. While Nitzer Ebb toured regularly into the present day, McCarthy faced health issues late in life, dropping off a 2024 European tour citing liver cirrhosis. 'After years of alcohol abuse, I was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver,' McCarthy said on Instagram last year. 'For more than two years I haven't been drinking, but recovery is a long process that can at times be extremely hard to predict.'
