Nidec CEO Stresses Compliance in Shift From Fixation on Growth
Nidec Corp. founder Shigenobu Nagamori said the Japanese maker of precision motors is prioritizing compliance, stepping away from a half-century-long focus on profit and growth. The acquisitive company is now teaching employees about the importance of contributing to society, even if that means additional costs, Nagamori said at the annual shareholders' meeting Friday in Kyoto. Nidec earlier this week delayed its submission of its securities report over errors in country-of-origin declarations and unpaid import tariffs at a subsidiary in Italy.

Massive industrial boost for North Karnataka: Rs 600-cr machinery unit in Dharwad to provide 800 jobs
Vijayapura: In a major push towards industrial development in North Karnataka, the state government has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Nidec manufacturing facility in Dharwad, built at a cost of Rs 600 crore. The unit will initially generate employment for 800 people, with a plan to expand to 3,000 jobs once the plant reaches full operational capacity, said Karnataka Industries Minister M.B. Patil in a press interaction in Vijayapura. The new facility incorporates French and Japanese technology, and will manufacture 2, 3, and 4 MW heavy-duty machines tailored to the growing demand from data centre industries. Importantly, the company aims to export these machines to global markets, including the United States and Europe, in addition to supplying within India. The Nidec project is a direct outcome of discussions held with the company during the government's 'Invest Karnataka' initiative and Minister Patil's official visit to Japan. 'This advanced industrial unit is a landmark step in realizing the state government's commitment to industrial decentralization and regional development,' Patil said. He added that the state is offering several incentives under its progressive industrial policy to attract such major investments. Nidec has adopted cutting-edge automation technologies and has committed to sustainable practices. The company plans to become carbon neutral by 2028, making this unit not just a source of employment, but also a model of green industrial development. In addition to boosting manufacturing in Dharwad, Minister Patil revealed that the government plans to set up aviation training centres across Karnataka. 'An aviation training centre will be established in Shivamogga, and another one is planned for Vijayapura in the near future,' he confirmed. These centres will offer career opportunities in the aviation sector, particularly for youth in Tier-2 cities. With the inauguration of the Nidec facility, Karnataka is not only showcasing its ability to attract global industrial giants, but also positioning North Karnataka as a future hub of high-tech manufacturing. This move is expected to transform the employment landscape, drive exports, and solidify Karnataka's position as a leader in industrial innovation and sustainable growth.

Nidec launches Rs 600cr manufacturing plant in Dharwad
Dharwad: Nidec, a global leader in data centre equipment manufacturing, has set up a new plant with an investment of Rs 600 crore at the Beluru Industrial Area in Dharwad. The facility was officially launched by minister for large and medium industries, MB Patil. Speaking at the event, Patil said the new plant, which creates 800 direct jobs, will cater to the growing demand across sectors such as electric vehicles, data centres, renewable energy, battery storage, and general industries. "This unit will bolster local manufacturing, enhance R&D capabilities, and improve supply chain reliability," he said. The plant will manufacture heavy-duty machines of 2MW, 3MW, and 4MW capacity, essential for data centres, using advanced technology from Japan and France. These machines will be exported to markets in the US, the UAE, and Europe, alongside serving the domestic market. "While the facility has initially generated 800 direct jobs, the number is expected to rise to around 3,000 once the plant becomes fully operational," Patil informed. He also mentioned that 20 acres of land has been allocated for the company's battery solutions unit. In addition to heavy machinery, the plant will also produce power backup generators, wind generators, alternators for data centre, EV motors for three wheelers, four wheelers, trucks, elevator motors, and electronic drives-MV and LV. "For Nidec's project, we ensured timely facilitation by allotting the required land within just two years," he added. Addressing concerns about water usage, the minister clarified, "The Krishna River water tribunal has allocated 4 tmc of water for industrial purposes, of which, we are currently using only 0.5 tmc. We are not diverting water meant for agriculture. Moreover, the industries are provided only downstream water from the Hidkal Dam." He further emphasised the importance of balancing industrial development with agricultural interests. "While acquiring land for industrial purposes, fair compensation must be ensured for farmers. A healthy balance between agriculture and industry is vital," Patil noted. The event saw the participation of Japanese Consul General Nakane Tsutomu, French Consul General Marc Lamy, and senior Nidec officials including Michael Briggs, Greg Garman, and Girish Kulkarni.
