Mets Make Trade Decision After Brutal Injury Setbacks: Report

Newsweek20 hours ago

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
The New York Mets relinquished the lead in the National League East division as their losing streak grew to six games, including two series sweeps in a row, on Thursday.
Now the team will face the division rival Philadelphia Phillies with one of its biggest strengths becoming a sudden weakness thanks to a surge of brutal pitcher injuries. In recent weeks, the Mets have lost frontline starters Kodai Senga and Tylor Megill to the injured list, with Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea still working their ways toward season debuts and Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn suddenly struggling on the mound.
"For months, the Mets enjoyed the benefits of an uncommonly deep cache of starting pitching depth," Anthony DiComo wrote for MLB.com. "They placed faith in a slew of offseason acquisitions and mostly succeeded in keeping them healthy. That depth is now being depleted at a rapid rate."
The Mets can still hope that their healthy arms bounce back in effectiveness, that Manaea and Montas return with a vengeance and that Senga and Megill require minimum recovery before rejoining the rotation. But in the meantime, the team has reportedly made a decision about where it stands on adding another starting pitcher before the midseason trade deadline.

"The Mets still lead MLB in starter ERA (2.95) but expect to be looking at starters at the deadline," according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
At this point, it's hard to say what arms will be available on the market. Heyman noted that Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates are decidedly unavailable, while Freddy Peralta of the Milwaukee Brewers is a "long shot." More questionable options, like Sandy Alcantara of the Miami Marlins and Adrian Houser of the Chicago White Sox, seem likely to move for the right price.
So, there are still some significant details to figure out, but it appears the Mets will be looking to add to what was recently a position of depth before it is too late.

Pete Alonso Makes Admission After Mets' Seventh Straight Loss

Pete Alonso Makes Admission After Mets' Seventh Straight Loss originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Mets were battered 10-2 by the surging Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night, a loss that not only extended their losing streak to seven games but also stripped them of first place in the National League East. Advertisement The Mets entered this season with bold ambitions, fueled by offseason acquisitions, including the record-breaking signing of outfielder Juan Soto. But midway through the summer, that promise is cracking under pressure. Thursday's loss marked another example of the club unraveling on both sides of the ball—unable to generate offense in key moments, and increasingly error-prone in the field. New York's lineup scattered a handful of hits but failed to sustain any meaningful rally. Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil each homered, providing the only offensive spark in an otherwise disjointed effort. New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso (20).© Brad Penner-Imagn Images As a team, the Mets left runners stranded in scoring position multiple times, a recurring theme in this slump. Soto, who has yet to deliver with consistency during this stretch, went hitless in run-producing opportunities and looked visibly frustrated at the plate. Advertisement In his postgame media session, Pete Alonso offered a candid assessment of the team's situation. 'We're not necessarily in sync on either side of the ball right now,' Alonso said. 'We're not playing clean baseball, we're not playing up to our potential. It's not our standard. It's been a poor showing the past 7 games.' His words reflect the sentiment growing among fans and players alike: this isn't just a slump—it's an identity crisis. Blade Tidwell, the Mets' top pitching prospect, started on the mound and allowed four runs in under four innings. Though his command wavered, the loss was hardly his alone. The bullpen followed with a disastrous outing, surrendering six additional runs as the game slipped into blowout territory. Advertisement The Mets now find themselves in a precarious position. What started as a rough week has become a full-blown free fall. New York needs a reset—mentally, tactically, and emotionally. The margin for error in a division race is razor-thin, and with the Phillies now atop the standings, the Mets must find a way to respond before the season's trajectory slips further.
