‘Lofty words, little action': Telangana BJP takes aim at Revanth govt.'s performance over unfulfilled promises

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy either step down or delegate leadership to someone within the Congress who is capable of fulfilling pre-poll promises made to the people of Telangana. The BJP argued that voters had chosen the Congress based on its guarantees, many of which are now being abandoned. On Tuesday, BJP chief spokesperson N.V. Subash said the CM's repeated claims of financial strain expose his inability to govern effectively. 'Before the elections, Mr. Reddy claimed that his party had economic experts who would guide the State out of financial trouble. Where are those experts now? Why does the Chief Minister keep saying there is no money to implement key schemes like Mahalakshmi or Rythu Bharosa,' he asked. added that blaming the previous Bharat Rashtra Samiti government and former Chief Minister Rao for unpaid bills and accumulating debt is merely an 'excuse' to mask the Congress government's 'non-performance'. 'If they were not ready with a plan, why did they make such lofty promises in the first place,' he questioned. In a separate press conference, Nizamabad Urban MLA Dhanpal Satyanarayana and ST Morcha president accused the Revanth Reddy-led government of betraying every section of society. Except for the free bus travel for women, they pointed out, none of the Congress' pre-election guarantees have been implemented so far. They questioned the government's silence on key promises such as enhanced financial assistance to farmers, including tenant farmers, monthly stipends for the unemployed, distribution of scooters to girl students, and the release of a job calendar for youth. The leaders also criticised the sluggish pace of the Indiramma housing scheme for the weaker sections and the lack of clarity on issuing new ration cards. They demanded that pending payments under the Aarogyasri health scheme be cleared immediately. Given these widespread failures, they said, the government lacks the moral authority to face the public in the upcoming local body elections. The State unit of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) staged a protest on Tuesday in front of the Telangana State Council of Higher Education, demanding that engineering admissions be conducted strictly based on merit and rank, without any form of donation. Led by BJYM president S. Mahender, the protesters urged the government to take strict action against private colleges that flout admission norms. They also called for the immediate implementation of the fee reimbursement scheme.

Karnataka High Court sets aside State government's 2024 decision to withdraw 43 criminal cases

The High Court of Karnataka on Thursday (May 29, 2025) set aside the Government Order (GO) issued in October 2024 for withdrawing 43 criminal cases, including the 2022 case of Hubballi riots, in which a mob had attacked and assaulted several police personnel over the issue of a controversial post on social media. A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice N.V. Anjaria and Justice K.V. Aravind passed the order while allowing a PIL petition filed by Girish Bharadwaj, a city-based advocate. 'The GO is set aside. It is declared that the GO shall stand non est from inception. Consequences in law will follow...,' the Chief Justice said while reading out the operative portion of the order. Impact of judgement The impact of the judgement is that even if the proceedings in any of the 43 cases were already from the jurisdictional courts based on the October 15, 2024, GO, all those proceedings will resume from the stage at which they were withdrawn. The petitioner had expressed concern as the 43 cases, which the Cabinet decided to withdraw, included the those in which serious charges under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, Prevention of Destruction of Public Property Act, 1984, and Religious Institution (Prevention of Misuse) Act, 1988 were invoked against some of the accused persons, including the 2022 case of Hubballi riots. In a few other cases, which were proposed to be withdrawn, former Ministers, former MLAs, and persons belonging to influential organisations were arraigned as accused persons, the petitioner had pointed out while contending that the GO was violative of Section 321 of the Criminal Procedure Code (Cr. PC) as this provision specifically grants the authority to initiate any action for withdrawal from prosecution solely to the prosecutor. Hence, it was argued on behalf of the petitioner that the State Cabinet had no power to issue the direction to the prosecutor to withdraw these criminal cases. Opinion of departments Also, the petitioner had stated that the decision of the Cabinet, based on which the GO was issued, was contrary to the opinion of the departments of the police and the prosecution, which had stated that these criminal cases were not fit for withdrawal. Moreover, it was pointed out in the petition that the High Court, while dealing with a similar instance of withdrawal of criminal cases based on 2020 Cabinet decision, had in 2022 clarified that withdrawal of cases against former and present MPs and MLAs would be governed by the judgment of the apex court, and hence they cannot be withdrawn without permission from the respective High Courts.

Merus updates on Petosemtamab+Pembrolizumab data in HNSCC

Merus (MRUS) N.V. 'announced interim clinical data as of a February 27, 2025 data cutoff from the ongoing phase 2 trial of the bispecific antibody petosemtamab in combination with pembrolizumab. These data will be presented by Dr. Carla M. L. van Herpen M.D. Ph.D., Radboud University Medical Center, Nijmegen, Netherlands at the 2025 American Society of Clinical Oncology(R) Annual Meeting on Monday, June 2 at 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. CT.' 'By essentially every metric, we believe these interim data are significantly better than pembrolizumab monotherapy, the control arm of our ongoing phase 3 trial, and underscores the opportunity petosemtamab holds to become a new standard of care, if approved, in head and neck cancer,' said Bill Lundberg, CEO. 'Additionally, we believe our execution is outstanding with rapid site initiation. We are looking forward to potentially sharing top line interim readout of one or both of our phase 3 trials in 2026. Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma is associated with a poor prognosis and high mortality rate, and there remains a need for new treatment options for patients. In my clinic, I have witnessed firsthand profound tumor shrinkage with petosemtamab administration, and the efficacy results petosemtamab has shown thus far in combination with the current standard of care, pembrolizumab. I'm excited by the impressive ORR and durability of those responses, and what these results, if replicated more broadly could mean for the future of our practice in head and neck cancer.'

Row over blocking road for ‘Literary Street' in Kozhikode

The Kozhikode Corporation's move to shut down Comtrust Road along Mananchira pond and divert traffic through Vaikom Mohammed Basheer Road at Mananchira has met with stiff opposition from traders and bus operators. Though a trial run by the traffic police on Wednesday proved to be a failure, another is being planned after schools reopen. The traffic diversion is being planned as part of efforts to convert Comtrust Road into a 'Literary Street', a plan that took form after Kozhikode was bestowed with the tag of UNESCO's City of Literature. The plan is to set up reading corners and book shops along the 100-metre stretch along Mananchira pond so that literature enthusiasts could enjoy their time amid books in a relaxed manner, without any disturbance caused by vehicles. However, traders' bodies and bus owners have vehemently opposed the move, saying that it will worsen congestion in the region, which is already suffering due to narrow roads and parking woes. 'We have already lost two roads to the development of Mananchira Square decades ago. Blocking one more road will be a blunder. We urge the Kozhikode Corporation to convene a meeting of stakeholders before taking a decision,' said V. Sunil Kumar, district general secretary of Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi. The Kozhikode unit of the Bus Operators' Association has also opposed the move. 'At least 70% of the buses in the city pass through Mananchira. At present, the traffic is smooth, despite the occasional protests that cause congestion at the Kidson Corner. But diverting bus traffic through Vaikom Mohammed Basheer Road will be a disaster,' said N.V. Abdul Jabbar, district secretary of the association. He said that the association had already conveyed its concerns to the Kozhikode Corporation and other authorities. He also suggested that the 'Literary street' be set up in a less crowded area. However, Mayor Beena Philip said the Corporation would not block Comtrust Road if the trial run proved unsuccessful. 'We may need to develop some parts of Town Hall Road for buses to move freely. The lack of parking space in the region is also a cause for concern,' she added. Meanwhile, bus operators suggested that the Corporation prioritise the widening of road at Kidson Corner and impose a ban on all kinds of protests there. They also demanded speedy completion of the Parking Plaza project so that people were not forced to park vehicles on Vaikom Mohammed Basheer Road.
