Otago Girls' brought together by library day
Shrek, Barbie and and The Cat in the Hat were some of the popular stories from which a Dunedin secondary school drew inspiration for its annual library day yesterday. Students from Otago Girls' High School dressed as characters from books and films to fundraise for new books for their library. Library prefect Caitlin Gibbs, 18, said this year's library day was a celebration of stories from books that had been reimagined as movies or TV shows. "In the past, we've had lots of fairy tales and nostalgia, so it was cool to bring in some of the new movies rather than just books on their own." Book presentations were followed by a video recording of interviews with guest speakers Sophie Black and Pepe de Hoyos. Otago Girls' High School deputy head girl Meg Allison (left) and head girl Jessie McGrouther dress as Fiona and Shrek in front of the prefect team yesterday for the school's annual library day. PHOTO: PETER MCINTOSH Ms Black graduated from Otago Girls' in 2004 and had since forged a career in the media industry, working as a director and writer for short film, music videos and documentary. She said her favourite projects had been ones with a social cause at their heart. Mr de Hoyos also has a career in media, having worked on MasterChef and My Kitchen Rules. Otago Girls' head girl Jessie McGrouther, 17, said library day was a fun day that bought the school together. "We all have a good laugh at everyone's costumes."

Celebrity chef Colin Fassnidge shares his shocking My Kitchen Rules salary: 'Below minimum wage'
He's one of the most well-know celebrity chefs on Australian television. But My Kitchen Rules star Colin Fassnidge was paid a shockingly low salary when he joined the show. The Irish-born chef, 51, has revealed he was paid just $40,000 for his time on My Kitchen Rules in 2013, when he joined the show's fourth season. 'My first MKR, I got paid $40,000 for the year. That's below minimum wage,' Colin told the Confessions of a Reality Star podcast. 'I was still learning. And then after, when I saw what everyone else was getting paid, I was like, we need to have a chat.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. View this post on Instagram A post shared by CONFESSIONS OF A REALITY STAR PODCAST (@confessionsofarealitystar) In 2013, the minimum wage salary for full-time workers based on 38 hours was $622.20 a week, which works out to $32,354 a year, slightly less than what Colin earned. While many believe a stint on a reality TV series is a passport to fame and riches, often the opposite is true. Sadly, the latter seems to be the case for the current crop of contestants on the long-running series My Kitchen Rules. In September, an unnamed contestant from the 2024 season revealed to Daily Mail Australia that the going rate for burgeoning TV chefs was $1100 per week - barely above minimum wage. The Australian minimum wage is currently $24.10 per hour, or $915.90 per week based on 38 hours. The contestant said appearing on the reality show meant taking a pay cut for many, claiming that one castmate ended up in the red after filming. 'It certainly didn't cover our usual salaries,' they claimed. 'I think one of our castmates was in debt after filming.' Despite the series drawing a huge audience each season, the show's popularity is often not reflected in how the contestants are compensated, according to a Seven casting executive. 'A lot of people still think getting on TV will make you rich and famous. It doesn't,' they said. They added the excitement of being selected for the show often outweighs the meagre remuneration. 'By the time you have seen your contract most applicants are so excited to be picked, they don't care about money. That's what producers expect,' the source revealed. A former MKR participant also revealed to Daily Mail Australia that, during their time on the show, they were forced to work well outside hours expected of someone earning just above average minimum wage. 'The shoots were longer than we were told. There was no overtime,' the contestant revealed. 'We were not expecting how long we were required to be there. Some days we would be filming well into the night.' The unnamed casting executive also pointed out the disparity between what the hosts of reality shows can earn versus the pay packets of the contestants who drive interest in the shows for Australian audiences. 'TV is wild. If you are the host of the show you could be making millions. However, if you are the main character and usually the reason why people are talking about your series - you are on as low as $70 a day,' they said. A source also revealed to Now To Love that contestants were paid $1000 but had to pay for groceries out of that amount to practice. 'It's hard. We were spending up to $600 a week on food because you're encouraged to cook as much as possible,' the insider said.

Anthony Mu: Former MKR star facing assault charges to stand trial in July
Don't miss out on the headlines from Breaking News. Followed categories will be added to My News. A trial date has been set for a former My Kitchen Rules contender who is facing multiple charges of assault. Anthony Mu did not appear before Richlands Magistrates Court when his matter was briefly mentioned on Friday morning. It followed his wife, Claudean Bernadette Uamaki-Mu, last week pleading guilty at the same court to six charges of common assault – receiving a good behaviour bond and no convictions. The pair appeared on the Channel 7 reality cooking show in 2023. Devyn Wanigesekera, appearing as a town agent for King Criminal Lawyers, fronted court for Mr Mu and his barrister Stephen Kissick. Anthony Mu, a former contestant on My Kitchen Rules in 2023, will stand trial in the Magistrates Court on raft of charges, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm, in July. Picture: NewsWire / John Gass Mr Mu is facing eight counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm (two while in company), two counts of common assault and one count of observations in breach of privacy. The court on Friday was told Mr Mu's trial was meant to go ahead last week alongside Ms Uamaki-Mu's matters, but it was adjourned due to lengthy case conferencing for Ms Uamaki-Mu's matters. 'The purpose of a mention today is to re-list the trial,' Mr Wanigesekera said. 'My instructions are (to request) one full day, as an estimate.' Acting Magistrate Michael Quinn said there was little chance of obtaining a hearing date on June 11. A hearing date was organised for July 28. Mr Mu remains on bail. Mr Mu was not present at Richlands Magistrates Court on Friday when his matter was briefly mentioned. Picture: NewsWire / John Gass Last Thursday, Ms Uamaki-Mu pleaded guilty to six charges of common assault following lengthy conferencing between her legal team and police prosecutors. The court was told the six charges related to assaults Ms Uamaki-Mu inflicted on children. Mr Quinn noted some details included Ms Uamaki-Mu pulling the hair of children, hitting one in the back of a head with a hairbrush, spitting on a child and throwing a plastic Tupperware container that hit a child on the back of the head. The court was told there was another incident in which a child was kicked in the stomach and yanked up by the hair. Another involved grabbing and throwing a child into a wall. Last week, Mr Mu's wife Claudean Bernadette Uamaki-Mu pleaded guilty to six counts of common assault, walking from court with no conviction recorded. Picture: NewsWire / John Gass 'Another … involved pulling the child to the ground and poking the child in the face with your finger,' Mr Quinn said. Ms Uamaki-Mu walked from court with a 12-month good behaviour bond and $1000 recognisance, and no conviction recorded. She is still due to stand trial in the District Court on 12 charges, including unlawful assault occasioning actual bodily harm, indecent treatment and rape. Dozens of charges against her were dismissed during a committal hearing in January, where Magistrate Stuart Shearer there were 'no particulars' or evidence to support each charge or that it was duplicitous with another charge.
