‘American Nightmare' rapist pleads guilty to additional charges
Matthew Muller, a convicted kidnapper whose crimes were portrayed in the Netflix documentary 'American Nightmare,' pleaded guilty to an additional, 32-year-old kidnapping and sexual assault on Wednesday, according to the Sacramento County district attorney's office. In 1993, a 16-year-old Muller held a couple at gunpoint while they camped at Folsom Lake in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Muller then tied up the male victim and proceeded to carry away and sexually assault the female victim, according to the district attorney's news release. The district attorney's Cold Case, Science & Technology Unit was 'instrumental' in uncovering additional evidence in the case, the news release added. The latest conviction is part of a string of similar sex crimes committed by Muller, who is currently serving a 40-year prison sentence for a 2015 kidnapping and sexual assault in Vallejo, Calif., and a life sentence for two 2009 kidnappings and assaults in Santa Clara. The 2015 crimes and a subsequent, flawed investigation were the subject of 'American Nightmare,' which premiered last year. Muller was sentenced to 11 years to life for the latest conviction. The sentence will be served consecutively with his other sentences. In 2015, Muller broke into a Vallejo home and drugged and bound a couple, Aaron Quinn and Denise Huskins. Muller then kidnapped Huskins in Quinn's car and held her for three days in his family's cabin in South Lake Tahoe. Muller sexually assaulted Huskins until he eventually released her in Huntington Beach. Huskins was accused by Vallejo police and FBI officials of fabricating her accusations before more of Muller's crimes were uncovered. Huskins and Quinn were treated as suspects until an attempted home invasion in Dublin, Calif., revealed Muller as the perpetrator. 'We knew there was more to this from the beginning, and clearly how things were handled from the beginning led to a lot of errors,' Huskins told The Times earlier this year. According to court documents, Muller drugged his victims with a cocktail of '¼ of a bottle of Diazepam and Nyquil,' and threatened them with violence if they did not comply. Muller's tactics apparently became more sophisticated after the 1993 gunpoint kidnapping, court documents said. Muller, a Harvard-educated immigration lawyer and former Marine, later admitted his involvement with the 1993 crimes to law enforcement, the news release said. 'This case is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of justice never ends. Matthew Muller's admission to the horrific kidnapping and sexual assault of a young girl in 1993 brings long-overdue justice for the victims,' Sacramento County Dist. Atty. Thien Ho said in the release.

‘American Nightmare' rapist convicted of terrorizing campers at Northern California lake
Serial rapist and kidnapper Matthew Muller, the former Marine and Harvard-educated immigration lawyer whose bizarre abduction of Denise Huskins in Vallejo became a Netflix documentary, was convicted Wednesday of terrorizing a young couple at Folsom Lake as a teenager more than three decades ago. In 1993, Muller was 16 years old when he used a gun to order two young campers out of their tent. He tied up the male and carried the female away to sexually assault her, according to the Sacramento County District Attorney's Office. Muller would later admit to the crimes to law enforcement and on Wednesday he pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced to 11 years to life, prosecutors said. 'This case is a powerful reminder that the pursuit of justice never ends,' said Sacramento County District Attorney Thien Ho. 'Matthew Muller's admission to the horrific kidnapping and sexual assault of a young girl in 1993 brings long-overdue justice for the victims. Thanks to the continued efforts of law enforcement, a dangerous sex offender is being held responsible for his crimes in our community.' Muller has now been convicted of six separate kidnappings and rapes spanning five Northern California counties since 1993. Muller agreed to be transferred to adult court for the Folsom Lake attack. The 32-year-old cold case was filed by Sacramento County prosecutors after evidence linked Muller, now 48, to the crime. The office's Cold Case, Science & Technology Unit helped solve the case, prosecutors said. In 2015, Muller broke into Huskins and her boyfriend's Mare Island home where he bound, blindfolded and forced them to drink a sedative. He forced Huskins into the trunk of his car and drove her to his South Lake Tahoe home where he raped her twice. Two days later, he drove her to her family's home in Huntington Beach and released her. While she was held captive, Muller sent an anonymous email to the Chronicle with an audio clip of Huskins speaking. Vallejo police initially believed her story was a hoax, saying she faked her own kidnapping. After Dublin police arrested Muller for a similar home invasion, investigators found a cellphone traced to him which led to evidence linking him to Huskins' abduction. Vallejo police would issue a public apology for the botched investigation and the city would pay the couple $2.5 million in a settlement. The entire episode would be chronicled in the Netflix documentary 'American Nightmare.' A judge sentenced Muller to 40 years in prison for the Vallejo case. In January, investigators from Santa Clara and Contra Costa counties connected Muller to unsolved cases in those areas. Muller broke into a woman's Mountain View home on September 29, 2009, attacked her, tied her up and forced her to drink a mix of medications, threatening to rape her. The next month, he broke into a woman's Palo Alto home, gagged the woman, forced her to drink NyQuil and assaulted her. Muller pleaded guilty to two felony charges of assault with the intention of committing rape during a burglary and was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences. In Contra Costa County, prosecutors charged Muller with kidnapping three victims for ransom near San Ramon. In spring 2015, prosecutors said, Muller held two men and a woman for ransom, demanding that one of the hostages withdraw tens of thousands of dollars from their bank account in order to secure their release. After getting the money, Muller fled. His involvement in that case was revealed during correspondence between law enforcement and an incarcerated Muller, in which he confessed to multiple crimes in Northern California, prosecutors said.

Mounting frustration as BRT project lags
The metro is facing growing frustration over the prolonged delays with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 2B expansion along Lynnwood Road. Both residents and councillors are raising the alarm about the sluggish progress. Line 2B of the A Re Yeng system starts at the N1 interchange on Atterbury Road, runs down Atterbury into Lynnwood Road and continues to Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Arcadia. The route is seen as a vital link for east-west commuters, connecting suburbs, schools, universities, and business districts. Ward councillor Siobhan Muller said the project, which was supposed to be completed in November 2024, appears to be going 'backwards' rather than moving forward. According to Muller, the physical building of the project began in 2023. 'For the last three months, it hasn't just stagnated; it's been going in reverse,' Muller said. 'There are ripple effects for everyone, from people trying to access the University of Pretoria to those commuting along Lynnwood Road or dropping children off at nearby schools.' She said the construction delays were being compounded by issues around land expropriation, service relocations, and requests for project extensions. 'This project was meant to ease traffic and benefit the city, but we are now in June and nowhere near completion. It urgently needs to move faster.' Echoing her concerns, DA councillor Dikeledi Selowa criticised the metro administration, calling the repeated delays a failure in governance. 'This project is only at 61% completion, even after a six-month extension,' Selowa said. 'It is clear that this administration has failed to properly finalise the expropriation process and relocation of services, leaving Tshwane exposed to potential legal action.' According to Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo, the metro has now set a revised completion date of July 18. However, he said the Roads and Transport Department is reviewing a report submitted by the project consultant, requesting yet another extension. Mashigo identified the key causes of delay as land expropriation challenges and slow progress by the contractor. He confirmed the current overall project progress at 62%, with some sections more advanced than others: – King's Highway culvert section: 83% – Culvert upgrade: 90% – Justice Mahomed intersection: 96% – Lynnwood and Atterbury intersection: 46.8% – University and Roper intersection: 25% When asked about the status of land acquisition and service relocation, Mashigo said the expropriation process has been concluded. 'The city is currently processing compensation payments and negotiating remaining agreements.' FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Highlights: Bayern, PSG register thumping wins
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup continued its action on Sunday as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain sent strong early signals of their title ambitions. Both clubs, backed by their impressive European seasons, walked onto the global stage with no signs of rust or hesitation. Bayern inflicted a merciless 10-0 defeat on Auckland City, while PSG comfortably outplayed Atletico de Madrid 4-0 in testing heat. The evening also featured two other matches, where Al Ahly edged Urawa Reds in a tense finish, and Monterrey handled Al Ittihad with clinical precision. For Bayern and PSG, it wasn't just about the scorelines—it was the sheer quality, focus and hunger that stood out. The gulf in class was evident, and both teams played like they had a point to prove despite being favourites. Musiala, Muller steal the show as Bayern maul Auckland Bayern Munich opened their campaign in brutal fashion at TQL Stadium, tearing apart Auckland City with a ten-goal blitz. Jamal Musiala stood tall with a hat-trick in the second half, while Thomas Muller and Kingsley Coman chipped in with two each. Michael Olise and Sacha Boey also found the net, as the German giants raced to a 6-0 lead by half-time. Coach Vincent Kompany, speaking post-match, downplayed the scoreline but admitted that goal difference could be key in the group stage. Muller, reflecting on his double, said the connection with the fans made it a night to remember. PSG make light work of Atletico in heat-tested clash Over in the second fixture, PSG turned on the style in their 4-0 win over Atletico Madrid. Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring early, with Vitinha doubling the lead just before the break. Senny Mayulu and Lee Kang-in wrapped things up late in the second half. Marquinhos praised the team's focus despite the tough weather, while Antoine Griezmann acknowledged that Atletico struggled to keep up with PSG's tempo in the heat.
