According to a statement from Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability, during the conference, the state presented its green and blue economy agenda under the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030), which emphasises a balance between economic growth, social inclusion and environmental stewardship. Deputy State Secretary (Economic and Planning) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel highlighted Sarawak's transparent and investor-friendly environment, reiterating the state's zero-tolerance stance on corruption. He invited international partners to collaborate on scaling clean energy solutions and advancing inclusive development. Sarawak Energy Berhad's senior vice president of Corporate Services Siti Aisah Adenan shared the company's long-term sustainability roadmap, which includes plans for cross-border grid integration to enable renewable energy exports and strengthen regional energy reliability. SEDC Energy chief executive officer Robert Hardin outlined ongoing collaborations with Japanese and South Korean partners to develop hydrogen and ammonia export capabilities. He said the Sarawak H2 Hub in Bintulu, developed with Gentari Sdn Bhd, will supply green hydrogen for industrial use and support Sarawak's ambition to become a commercial hydrogen producer by 2027. Earlier in the conference, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Dr Hazland Abang Hipni delivered a keynote during the Sarawak session on Opportunities in Borneo, highlighting the state's energy transition as being driven by strong policy frameworks, continued investment in innovation and close regional cooperation.

Federal-state delegation surveys Baram's poor rural roads, eyes urgent action

LONG LAPOK (April 24): Sarawak Deputy State Secretary Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel earlier today led a delegation, comprising senior officials from the federal Economic Planning Unit (EPU), Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) and several other government agencies, to inspect the condition of logging roads and former logging routes in the interior of Baram. The visit, prompted by concerns raised by Telang Usan assemblyman Datuk Dennis Ngau, aims to assess the accessibility and infrastructure challenges faced by rural communities in the region. Muhammad Abdullah said the inspection formed part of a concerted effort to better understand the realities on the ground, particularly those affecting rural communities. 'This visit is our responsibility as civil servants. We brought along officials from Putrajaya, the Ministry of Economy, as well as other federal and state agencies so that they can witness the conditions for themselves. 'Tomorrow (April 25), we will be holding a lab session to further discuss possible solutions to this issue,' he told The Borneo Post during the site visit. He pointed out that road accessibility is crucial not only for the convenience of rural communities, but also for civil servants such as teachers and medical personnel who are stationed in remote areas. On the road conditions, he said the difference between unmaintained and maintained logging roads is obvious. 'However, even the maintained ones remain far from comfortable. 'Proper road access is essential for mobility, connectivity, and the overall well-being of these communities,' he added. Photo shows a collapsed logging bridge at Sungai Medan, which forced the delegation to divert to Uma Bawang instead of Long Suling. Moreover, Muhammad Abdullah expressed appreciation for the commitment shown by the federal officials who made the trip despite their tight schedules. 'We're grateful for their willingness to come down to the ground. Although infrastructure falls under federal jurisdiction, close cooperation is needed. 'We hope this visit leads to stronger support and funding from Putrajaya,' he said. The delegation included Ministry of Economy deputy director I (Spatial and Rural Development) Wan Muhammad Najib Wan Abdul; KKDW Putrajaya Principal assistant secretary Mohd Naim Norman; KKDW Sarawak senior civil engineer Sabariah Nawawi; Miri Resident Galong Luang; and Telang Usan District officer Ezra Uda. Meanwhile, Dennis, who also joined the visit, said he has repeatedly urged the relevant authorities to come down to the ground to see and experience for themselves the poor condition of the roads faced by the rural communities. Today's visit, he added, was the result of his request to the Deputy State Secretary during a briefing at the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Northern Zone Triennial Delegates' Conference last December, where he had raised the issue of damaged roads and collapsed bridges, especially in his constituency. 'I requested for the government to hold a lab session with all stakeholders, including representatives from our constituencies, where we can discuss and find the best possible solution to this long standing issue affecting our rural communities.' Baram MP Datuk Anyi Ngau, who was also present, stated that it is high time for both the state and federal governments to resolve the worsening infrastructure issues in Baram, which have become increasingly critical in recent years. He stressed that both the state and federal governments must work together to find the best way forward for this problem that has persisted for far too long. 'In fact, I have often raised this matter in Parliament,' he said. He thus urged the government to immediately allocate special funds for the repair and maintenance of all former logging roads and damaged bridges throughout his constituency. The delegation today was scheduled to visit several damaged roads and bridges up to Long Suling, Baram, but diverted to Uma Bawang due to a damaged logging bridge at Sungai Medan. They are also expected to have a closed-door lab session tomorrow (April 25) aimed at formulating strategies for improving rural infrastructure in the Baram parliamentary constituency. Abang Johari (fourth left) and others witness the exchange of the MoA between Muhammad Abdullah (fourth right) and Noor Azuan. – Ukas photo KUCHING (April 23): The Sarawak government today formalised a landmark partnership with Universiti Malaya (UM) through the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) to establish the 'Kursi Derma Kekal Yang Amat Berhormat Premier Sarawak' (Endowed Chair of the Premier of Sarawak). Under the agreement, the Sarawak government will contribute RM5 million to UM for the establishment of the Chair, with the endowment fund serving as a capital base to support and strengthen research, publication, and services in the framework of the New Economy and its regulatory aspects. Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said in order for Sarawak to succeed in this new era, the state must be ready to lead and position itself in a very significant step towards the New Economy. 'We are not just setting up a Chair. We are building a strong team that will focus on new ideas, do important research and help guide how we make laws and rules for the future in this field. 'UM, as one of the best universities in Malaysia, has continuously demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence and societal impact. 'I truly believe that this collaboration will bring significant benefits to Sarawak and more broadly, to Malaysia as a whole,' he said at a ceremony to witness the exchange of the signed MoA at Wisma Bapa Malaysia here. He pointed out that the new Chair will focus on several key areas of the New Economy, namely green economy which includes carbon trading and carbon credits aimed at protecting the environment and reducing pollution; hydrogen economy such as bioenergy and hydropower which are clean energy sources for the future; and biotech healthcare which uses science to improve health, medicine and disease prevention. 'Another important area of the New Economy is artificial intelligence (AI) which can make work smarter and faster, but also needs good rules to keep it fair and safe. 'All of these must support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and help fight climate change,' he added. Abang Johari said the establishment of the Endowed Chair of the Premier of Sarawak will facilitate an annual lecture series entitled 'Kuliah Yang Amat Berhormat Premier Sarawak', designed to promote public discourse, knowledge exchange and policy dialogue. 'It is my hope that this lecture series will bring together not only policymakers and industry leaders, but also the academic community such as our universities, researchers and scholars, who play a vital role in shaping ideas and informing decisions. 'In the long run, this effort will strengthen Sarawak's intellectual capacity, support good governance and prepare our people to lead in this fast-changing world.' He also said that through this collaboration, research conducted under this Chair will be published in recognised international journals and that all publications resulting from the study will be shared and made readily accessible to the Sarawak government and its agencies. 'This accessibility will provide Sarawak's policymakers and agencies with critical, up-to-date insights, driving informed decision-making and fostering the development of practical solutions for the State's growth and progress,' said Abang Johari. During the ceremony, the Premier witnessed the exchange of the MoA between Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel representing the Sarawak government, and UM represented by its vice chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Noor Azuan Abu Osman. Also present were Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, and Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department Datuk Abdullah Saidol. JI files petition for LG polls in Punjab
Mufti Muhammad Abdullah of the Jamaat-i-Islami said Ahmadis were stooges of the West and enemies of Pakistan. PHOTO: FILE Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC), seeking directions for the immediate conduct of local government elections in Punjab within 90 days. The petition, submitted by Zia Ud Din Ansari, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore region, names the Federation of Pakistan, the government of Punjab, the Election Commission of Pakistan, the Provincial Election Commission of Punjab, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Chief Secretary Punjab as respondents. Ansari contended that the delay in holding local body polls is unconstitutional and violates fundamental rights under Article 140-A of the Constitution. He urged the court to declare this failure unlawful and direct the respondents to take immediate steps to schedule and conduct free, fair, and timely elections, in line with constitutional provisions and the devolution mandate under the Punjab Local Government Act. The petitioner further sought penalties against the responsible authorities for neglecting their constitutional duty. He argued that the non-conduct of local body elections undermines the spirit of the 18th Amendment, which decentralised governance by granting provinces the authority to organize local governments. The petition emphasised that delaying these elections weakens democracy, deprives citizens of their right to grassroots representation, and hinders effective governance. It asserted that the Punjab government's inaction violates principles of transparency, accountability, and participatory democracy guaranteed by the Constitution. Jamaat-e-Islami, known for its advocacy of democratic and constitutional rights, maintained that the prolonged delay in local government elections has created a "democratic deficit," negatively impacting governance, local development, and public accountability in Punjab.
