JI files petition for LG polls in Punjab

Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC), seeking directions for the immediate conduct of local government elections in Punjab within 90 days.
The petition, submitted by Zia Ud Din Ansari, Ameer Jamaat-e-Islami Lahore region, names the Federation of Pakistan, the government of Punjab, the Election Commission of Pakistan, the Provincial Election Commission of Punjab, the Ministry of Local Government, and the Chief Secretary Punjab as respondents. Ansari contended that the delay in holding local body polls is unconstitutional and violates fundamental rights under Article 140-A of the Constitution.
He urged the court to declare this failure unlawful and direct the respondents to take immediate steps to schedule and conduct free, fair, and timely elections, in line with constitutional provisions and the devolution mandate under the Punjab Local Government Act.
The petitioner further sought penalties against the responsible authorities for neglecting their constitutional duty.
He argued that the non-conduct of local body elections undermines the spirit of the 18th Amendment, which decentralised governance by granting provinces the authority to organize local governments.
The petition emphasised that delaying these elections weakens democracy, deprives citizens of their right to grassroots representation, and hinders effective governance.
It asserted that the Punjab government's inaction violates principles of transparency, accountability, and participatory democracy guaranteed by the Constitution.
Jamaat-e-Islami, known for its advocacy of democratic and constitutional rights, maintained that the prolonged delay in local government elections has created a "democratic deficit," negatively impacting governance, local development, and public accountability in Punjab.

TTP group terrorist killed in DI Khan

The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa police on Saturday killed one terrorist and injured two others belonging to the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group in Dera Ismail Khan as they attempted to attack police. A statement issued by the police said the TTP terrorists targeted a police party near the Malang area, within the jurisdiction of Hathala Police Station, as they were returning from duty in the Takwara area. "The police retaliated vigorously and repelled the terrorists' attack. In the ensuing action by the Dera police, an active terrorist of the banned TTP-Gandapur group was killed, while two other terrorists were injured," the statement said. Separately, two police personnel from the Gadoon Industrial Estate Solice station in Swabi district were martyred when two unidentified motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire on them while they were drinking water at a hotel. Prime Minister Shehbaz Saturday strongly condemned the firing incident on the police personnel in Swabi and expressed deep grief and sorrow over their martyrdom. He paid tribute to the martyred personnel and prayed for strength and fortitude for the bereaved families, PM Office Media Wing said in a statement. He further directed a thorough investigation into the incident and called for exemplary punishment for those responsible once they are identified.

K-P budget to be approved only after Imran's nod, says CM's aide

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister's Advisor on Information Barrister Dr Saif has said that the provincial budget will not be approved without consultation with Patron-in-Chief Imran Khan. He noted that people voted for the vision of the Patron-in-Chief therefore all key decisions, including the budget, should reflect the public mandate. Speaking to the media, Dr Saif warned that people would not tolerate any disrespect to their democratic mandate. He further cautioned that any attempt to impose an emergency in the province would be short-lived, adding, "A fake government will not survive even a day." The advisor clarified that the authority to dissolve the provincial assembly rested with the Chief Minister, who could exercise it at his discretion. K-P is the only province where a genuine government has been formed based on Form 45. In contrast, the federal and other provincial governments rely on Form 47 - which is based on a "false foundation" and can be toppled with the slightest push, said the K-P CM aide. He reiterated that the people of K-P voted for the ideology of Imran Khan thus all significant decisions must be made in consultation with him. He urged the federal government to refrain from "petty tactics". He accused the federal government of relentlessly trying to undermine the K-P government, adding that the people of the province were being punished for supporting the Patron-in-Chief. "Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is a vital unit of the federation, and weakening it is tantamount to weakening Pakistan itself," said Saif. He warned that any conspiracy against the province would have serious repercussions. Under the vision of the Patron-in-Chief and the leadership of Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur, the province is witnessing rapid development, which is hard to digest by the federal government. He termed K-P a stronghold of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), adding the movement for the release of the Patron-in-Chief will gain full momentum from the province. He alleged that false cases had been registered to confine the Patron-in-Chief, but assured that all such fabricated cases would soon be dismissed.
