Man gets 20-years jail term for sexual assault on minor girl
The Fast Track Mahila Court in Erode on Wednesday (June 18, 2025) sentenced a 36-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor girl in 2020. According to the prosecution, G. Moorthy, who was employed at a brick manufacturing unit, frequently visited the home of a co-worker and became acquainted with his daughter, a Class 10 student. He gifted her a mobile phone and maintained frequent contact. On November 15, 2020, he lured the girl with a promise of marriage and took her to his friend's house in Dharmapuri, where he sexually assaulted her. He later married her and started living with her. Following a complaint lodged by the girl's parents, the Arachalur police rescued her and registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, and sections of the IPC related to kidnapping. After the trial, Judge C. Sornakumar sentenced Moorthy to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault, five years for kidnapping, and one year for marrying a minor. The sentences will run concurrently. A fine of ₹35,000 was also imposed. The judge recommended that the State government provide a compensation of ₹2 lakh to the victim. Moorthy has been lodged in Coimbatore Central Prison.

TN ADGP arrested in kidnap case following court directive
Chennai, The Madras High Court on Monday orally directed the Tamil Nadu police to arrest an ADGP ranked official in connection with a kidnap case and he was secured minutes later. Justice P Velmurugan gave the directive while hearing an anticipatory bail application filed by MLA M Jagan Moorthy, who apprehended arrest in the case. He represents Kilvaithinankuppam and heads an outfit. Assistant Director General of Police HM Jayaram was arrested after he came out of the court building. The judge also came down heavily on the legislator. When the case came up for hearing on Monday, the judge orally summoned Moorthy, leader of Puthia Bharatham Katchi and ADGP Jayaram, whose official car was allegedly used for kidnapping, to appear before the court in the afternoon. Accordingly both appeared before the court. The Judge asked Jagan Moorthy as to how many votes he secured to become a MLA. Moorthy replied that he polled around 80,000 votes and won by a margin of 10,000 votes. To this, the judge said the people had cast their votes in his favour to serve them and not to conduct Kangaroo Courts. He asked Moorthy to go to the Legislative Assembly and highlight people's issues on the floor and make an attempt to solve them. "You not only represent those who voted for you but you represent the entire constituency", the judge orally added. The court said if any layman approaches the MLA with some grievance, he should try to help them. Pointing out at the submission of the Additional Public Prosecutor that when the police went to call him for enquiry, nearly 2,000 people surrounded his house, the judge said this was not good. "Why do you want so many people with you. You are an MLA. Why are you shying," the judge added. The judge asked the MLA to cooperate with the inquiry. The judge made these observations orally. The court also directed the police to secure ADGP Jayaram. One cannot equate the MLA and the police as the latter was a public servant. The court wanted to send the message to all public servants, the judge added. In his brief order, the judge said since two of the accused have given a confession statement against the ADGP, action should be taken against him in the manner known to law. The judge posted to June 26, further hearing of the case.

120 tonnes of waste removed from Thamirabarani river
Tirunelveli: More than 120 tonnes of waste, primarily ritual waste, were removed along a stretch of the Thamirabarani river near Papanasam in Tirunelveli district in a 21-day clean-up drive, which concluded on Wednesday. Activists blame the rising trend on advice given by some priests and astrologers who claim that discarding belongings of the deceased into the river ensures peace for the departed soul. Led by 74-year-old environmental activist B Moorthy, a retired assistant director of statistics, the campaign was supported by local NGOs and volunteers. The bulk of the waste comprised 93.8 tonnes of wet clothes, largely attributed to items discarded after thithi rituals. The team also retrieved 3.5 tonnes of stones, 23.5 tonnes of plant debris, and large quantities of plastic (4,540kg), metal scraps (1,720kg), footwear (580kg), glassware and photo frames (975kg), sanitary waste (255kg), and oil lamp residues (120kg). Additionally, 1,800kg of broken mud pots and 3.5 tonnes of discarded deity idols were recovered from the five-km stretch downstream of the Papanasam temple. Moorthy, who was involved in river clean-up efforts for over 15 years, said that waste collection during this season consistently crossed 100 tonnes recently "Despite the local administration placing bins and awareness boards, people continue to throw ritual waste directly into the river," he said. Officials attempted to tackle the issue with periodic announcements and by appointing contractors to collect reusable clothes left behind. However, items linked to death rituals are still commonly dumped into the river. "We've tested water samples downstream of the temple — the pollution levels are too high for the water to be considered potable," Moorthy added. Moorthy received the Tamil Nadu govt's Green Champion Award in 2023 for his conservation work. "What we need now is sustained govt support and regulation to end these harmful practices," he said. Moorthy rallies cadres ahead of DMK general council meeting
Madurai: Minister for commercial taxes and registration, P Moorthy, on Friday urged DMK party cadres and functionaries to ensure the general council meeting on June 1 and the chief minister's grand roadshow on May 31 are a grand success with party discipline. Addressing a consultative meeting at Uthangudi in Madurai, Moorthy said the June 1 gathering, to be held at Kalaignar Thidal in Madurai, would be a turning point in DMK's political journey. "This event is not just for Madurai — it will reflect the strength of our party across Tamil Nadu. The roadshow and council meeting must showcase our unity and readiness for the elections ahead," he said. Senior leaders, including information technology minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan (PTR), Madurai district secretaries G Thalapathi and M Manimaran, participated in the strategy session. Moorthy emphasised that every district-level and union-level office bearer with general council status should participate, reaffirming that the event will be strictly protocol-driven. The minister added that chief minister M K Stalin will inaugurate a statue of former Madurai mayor Muthu during his roadshow, starting from Perungudi and culminating at Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal via major DMK strongholds — a gesture that reinforces the party's historical roots in the city.
