TN ADGP arrested in kidnap case following court directive
Chennai, The Madras High Court on Monday orally directed the Tamil Nadu police to arrest an ADGP ranked official in connection with a kidnap case and he was secured minutes later.
Justice P Velmurugan gave the directive while hearing an anticipatory bail application filed by MLA M Jagan Moorthy, who apprehended arrest in the case. He represents Kilvaithinankuppam and heads an outfit.
Assistant Director General of Police HM Jayaram was arrested after he came out of the court building.
The judge also came down heavily on the legislator.
When the case came up for hearing on Monday, the judge orally summoned Moorthy, leader of Puthia Bharatham Katchi and ADGP Jayaram, whose official car was allegedly used for kidnapping, to appear before the court in the afternoon. Accordingly both appeared before the court.
The Judge asked Jagan Moorthy as to how many votes he secured to become a MLA.
Moorthy replied that he polled around 80,000 votes and won by a margin of 10,000 votes.
To this, the judge said the people had cast their votes in his favour to serve them and not to conduct Kangaroo Courts.
He asked Moorthy to go to the Legislative Assembly and highlight people's issues on the floor and make an attempt to solve them.
"You not only represent those who voted for you but you represent the entire constituency", the judge orally added.
The court said if any layman approaches the MLA with some grievance, he should try to help them.
Pointing out at the submission of the Additional Public Prosecutor that when the police went to call him for enquiry, nearly 2,000 people surrounded his house, the judge said this was not good.
"Why do you want so many people with you. You are an MLA. Why are you shying," the judge added.
The judge asked the MLA to cooperate with the inquiry.
The judge made these observations orally.
The court also directed the police to secure ADGP Jayaram.
One cannot equate the MLA and the police as the latter was a public servant. The court wanted to send the message to all public servants, the judge added.
In his brief order, the judge said since two of the accused have given a confession statement against the ADGP, action should be taken against him in the manner known to law.
The judge posted to June 26, further hearing of the case.

117 drug smugglers arrested; 7.5kg heroin, over s 39K recovered
Chandigarh: The Punjab Police, under the state govt's 'war against drugs' initiative, arrested 117 drug smugglers on Saturday and recovered 7.5 kg of heroin, 500 grams of opium, and Rs 39,640 in drug money from their possession. In the last 112 days, the police have arrested 18,524 drug smugglers. The operation was conducted on the directions of the director general of police (DGP), Punjab, Gaurav Yadav simultaneously in all the 28 police districts of the state. Special director general of police (Law and Order) Arpit Shukla informed that over 200 police teams, comprising over 1,300 police personnel, under the supervision of 87 gazetted officers, conducted raids at as many as 481 locations across the state. The opeartion led to the registration of 84 FIRs, said the ADGP, adding that the police teams also checked 501 suspicious persons during the day-long operation, he said. The state govt has enforced a three-pronged strategy — enforcement, deaddiction and prevention (EDP) — to eradicate drugs from the state, said Shukla. The Punjab Police, as part of the 'de-addiction' drive, convinced 74 people to undergo de-addiction and rehabilitation treatment, he added.

Anna University sexual assault case: Plea in Madras High Court insists on inquiring Annamalai to find out who is that ‘sir'
A writ petition has been filed in the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Direcor General of Police (DGP) and the Inspector of Kotturpuram police station in Chennai to conduct an inquiry regarding Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) former State president K. Annamalai's claim that he was in possession of certain records related to the Anna University sexual assault case. The writ petition (criminal) has been numbered and expected to be listed before Justice P. Velmurugan this week. Advoate M.L. Ravi, also the president of Desiya Makkal Sakthi Katchi, had filed the petition. The petitioner had sought a direction to the DGP to instruct the Inspector to register a First Information Report (FIR) on the basis of a complaint lodged by the writ petitioner on May 31, 2025. The petitioner stated that a woman engineering student had been subjected to sexual abuse at the Anna University campus in Chennai by biriyani seller D. Gnanasekar on December 23, 2024. According to the victim, the aggressor had intervened when she was close with her boyfriend and threatened that he would disclose the incident to the top brass of the college if she does not budge to his sexual desire. The victim had also claimed that the aggressor had spoken on phone to someone by referring to the person on the other end as 'sir' and used the phone call to sexually assault her. Most Opposition political parties in the State wanted to know 'Who was that sir?' However, the police, continued to maintain that Gnanasekar had operated alone and that he had only pretended to talk to someone while keeping his phone on flight mode. Anna University sexual assault case: SIT charge sheet claims phone of sole accused Gnanasekar was on flight mode On the other hand, Mr. Annamalai, made a persistent claim all through that he was in possession of Gnanasekar's call records and that there was more to the crime than what meets the eye. Yet, the police did not choose to inquire him regarding the reported materials in his possession, despite a specific representation made by the writ peitioner in February 2025 and ended up filing a charge sheet only against Gnanasekar. After a speedy trial, the Mahila Court in Chennai convicted Gnanasekar on May 28, 2025 and pronounced the sentence on June 2, 2025. Even after the conviction, Mr. Annamalai continued to maintain that he was in possession of records to prove the link of others too. Therefore, the petitioner had lodged a complaint with the police on May 31, 2025 to inquire Mr. Annamalai in connection with the case. He wanted this complaint to be registered, and an inquiry initiated to find out if there was really any 'sir' involved in the crime.
