MMC Act Most Significant Reform In Journalism Landscape, Realised By MADANI Govt
LUMUT, June 15 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act, which came into effect yesterday (June 14), marks the most significant reform in the country's journalism landscape, realised under the MADANI Government. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the MADANI Government had succeeded in realising the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) after nearly 50 years of anticipation among media practitioners. 'This is the most significant reform that we (MADANI Government) have introduced. With the establishment of the Media Council, media organisations can now independently and freely deliberate on matters such as journalistic ethics and the future of the media in our country, without interference or influence from any party, including the government,' he said. 'For us, especially our colleagues in Keadilan (PKR) within Pakatan Harapan, as well as our friends in UMNO who have long championed media freedom, this has become a reality with the establishment of the Media Council,' he said. He was speaking at the Communications Minister and the MADANI Community session, held in conjunction with the Northern Zone B Akademi Asas Penerangan (ASAS) programme organised by the Department of Information (JaPen) at Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Marine Engineering Technology (UniKL-MIMET) here today. Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and JaPen director-general Julina Johan. Fahmi, at a press conference following the National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 main celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) yesterday, announced that the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) Act would come into effect on June 14, 2025. He also announced that he would soon hold a meeting with the 12 members of the MMC founding board to assist in shaping the council's next steps and future activities. The three-day HAWANA 2025 celebration, which concludes today, is organised by the Ministry of Communications, with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency.

RM30m allocation will boost digital shift in media industry
KUALA LUMPUR: The RM30 million allocation for local media organisations will support digital transformation and the adoption of new technologies in content creation, Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa said. The allocation was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when he officiated the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 main event held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today, in line with efforts to strengthen the media ecosystem and sustainability in the country. Mohamad Fauzi, who was present at the event, also welcomed AirAsia's one-time 50 per cent discount offer for all verified media practitioners on flights to 57 destinations across ASEAN, describing it as greatly appreciated. 'The Prime Minister also presented the HAWANA 2025 Special Award to the family of the late Rozaid Abdul Rahman, and Datuk Yong Soo Heong was named the recipient of the HAWANA 2025 Award in recognition of their contributions to journalism,' he said in a Facebook post today. HAWANA 2025, themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', was celebrated with great enthusiasm and attended by over 1,000 local and international media practitioners. May 29 has been officially gazetted as National Journalists Day to commemorate the publication of the first edition of 'Utusan Melayu' on May 29, 1939, in honour of media professionals who play a vital role in shaping an informed society. The HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration was also attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching. Also present were Bernama chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai, Bernama chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director, and the top management of local media companies.

Journalists urged to uphold integrity and share truth boldly
KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa has conveyed Happy National Journalists' Day 2025 greetings to all media practitioners. In a Facebook post, he expressed hope that journalists will continue to be resilient and courageous and uphold integrity in delivering accurate and truthful information for the nation's well-being. The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) is celebrated annually on May 29. The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will take place on June 14 at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (WTCKL). The event will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and is expected to draw around 1,000 media practitioners from both local and international news organisations. Organised by the Communications Ministry with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, HAWANA will feature a range of events, including a Pantun Festival on May 31, a pre-launch ceremony with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, and a media forum co-hosted with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14. In its fifth edition since its inaugural event in 2018, HAWANA aims to recognise media practitioners' roles and contributions to the nation's development.
