MNS workers booked for creating ruckus at civic hospital in Vashi

NAVI MUMBAI: The Vashi police have registered a case against several Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers for allegedly threatening public servants and obstructing them from discharging their duty at the Municipal Hospital in Vashi, after a Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) employee allegedly demanded money from relatives of a deceased to wrap the body. The incident took place on June 17 around 12:30 pm. As per the complaint filed with the police, the group of MNS workers, identified as Sagar Vichare, Sanjay Shirke, Sagar Tambe, Santosh Motasingh, Sandesh Khambe, Pravin Mane, Shailesh Pachange, Akshay Trimukhe, Sangeeta Vajare, Deepali Daul, along with 10-15 unidentified party members, allegedly entered the hospital premises without prior permission. According to the complaint filed by Dr Rajesh Mhatre, medical superintendent of the hospital, the group forcibly barged into his office to confront him regarding a viral video that had surfaced on social media, showing hospital mortuary staff allegedly demanding money for postmortem services. Despite being informed about the steps taken by the hospital administration regarding the viral video, the MNS workers reportedly began hurling threats and abuses. They allegedly manhandled the security staff and forcibly draped a white cloth around Dr Mhatre's neck, all the while shouting slogans. In the complaint, it is stated that an MNS worker, identified as Sagar Vichare, allegedly demanded Dr. Mhatre's resignation, using offensive language. The group is also accused of video recording the incident and circulating it via news channels and social media platforms with the intention of maligning the reputation of the complainant and the Municipal Hospital. Based on the complaint, Vashi police registered an FIR under sections 329(3), 132, 221, 342, 352, 351(3), 353(1)B, 189(2), 190 and 191 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and section 4 of Maharashtra Medical Service Persons and Medical Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage or Loss to Property) Act, 2010, charging them for unlawful assembly, criminal trespass, intimidation, obstructing public servants, and intentional insult. 'We have served notices of appearance to all the accused and further investigation is underway,' said senior inspector Sanjay Dhumal of Vashi police station.

Forest land scam: ED freezes assets worth ₹44 cr, seizes ₹16.5 lakh in cash

MUMBAI: The Mumbai unit of Enforcement Directorate (ED) has seized assets, including fixed deposits and mutual funds worth around ₹44 crore, and seized ₹16.5 lakh in cash during search operations conducted on Tuesday at many places, including at the premises of politician and businessman JM Mhatre. The ED operations are part of its money-laundering investigation into an alleged land fraud in Vahal village in Raigad district. Mhatre and others are accused of acquiring forest land illegally in 2005 by making duplicate entries in mutation records and, subsequently, surrendering the land to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) to receive ₹52 crore in total as compensation. Mutation records are official documents which record changes in ownership of property. The searches were carried out at multiple locations in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, resulting in the seizure of a large number of incriminating documents, apart from the freezing of financial assets and seizure of cash. The ED's ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) in the money-laundering case is based on a first information report (FIR) registered by the Panvel police on the basis of a complaint by the forest department against Mhatre and a certain S Qadri (now deceased). 'The main accused in the case is J M Mhatre. He is a businessman and the director of a firm, J M Mhatre Infra Private Limited,' an ED official said. Mhatre, a former Panvel Municipal Council president, was a Peasants and Workers Party (PWP) leader for nearly four decades before he shifted to the BJP recently. HT reached out to him for his comments regarding the ED's action and the allegations against him, but he did not respond despite repeated attempts. Among the freezing and seizures made by the ED in the course of the search operations were bank balances of ₹23.62 lakh (of Mhatre), fixed deposits of ₹42.17 crore (of J M Mhatre Infra Private Limited), bank balance of ₹1.37 crore and mutual funds of ₹23 lakh (of Qadri) and cash of ₹16.5 lakh from the latter's family's premises. ED had undertaken the searches to unearth details related to the land fraud and trace the alleged proceeds of crime, agency officials said. The case pertains to the alleged illegal acquisition of forest land and its subsequent illegal transfer to NHAI and making a wrongful claim of land compensation by the accused persons. ED's investigation revealed that the mutation entry of the said land was tampered with and the name of the owner, Maharashtra forest department, was replaced with that of the accused illegally, ED officials said. Some parcels of the land were allegedly illegally sold to the NHAI, for which Mhatre received compensation of ₹42.4 crore while Qadri received ₹9.69 crore, ED officials said.

Illegal forest land acquisition case: ED freezes assets worth Rs 44 crore in raids on properties of contractor JM Mhatre

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has frozen bank balances, fixed deposits and mutual funds to the tune of approximately Rs 44 crore and seized cash amounting to Rs 16.5 lakh after raiding the properties belonging to contractor J M Mhatre of J M Mhatre Infrastructure Private Limited in Dadar and Panvel on Tuesday in connection with the money laundering case linked to the alleged illegal acquisition of forest land in Navi Mumbai. Apart from this, a large number of incriminating documents have also been seized by ED, the central agency stated on Wednesday. The search operation was aimed at unearthing the land scam and tracing the proceeds of the crime, ED said. Mhatre, a long-time member of the Peasants and Workers Party (PWP), has previously served as the chairperson of the Panvel Municipal Council, prior to its upgrade to a municipal corporation. Having spent the majority of his political career with the PWP, Mhatre made a significant shift in May this year when he, along with his son, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the presence of BJP working president Ravindra Chavan and Cabinet Minister Ashish Shelar. The central agency's case against Mhatre is based on the complaint filed by the range forest officer of the Forest Department in Uran under the Alibagh division in September 2024 at the Panvel Police Station. As per the Panvel police's FIR, the accused illegally acquired the government forest land by making a duplicate entry in the mutation in 2005. According to ED, the case against Mhatre and Saiyyed Mohammad Abdul Hamid Qadri pertains to the illegal acquisition of forest land and its subsequent illegal transfer to NHAI and the wrong claim of land compensation by the accused. The land in question is at Survey Numbers 427/1 (area 41.70 hectares) and 436/1 (area 110.60 hectares) of Mauje Vahal, Taluka Panvel, Dist-Raigad (subject land). ED stated in a release that their investigation has revealed that the said land was acquired by the Government of Maharashtra in 1975 under relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Private Forests (Acquisition) Act, 1975, and thereafter the name of the owner in the 7/12 extract was changed to the Forest Department, Government of Maharashtra. Subsequently, the mutation entry of the subject land has been tampered with, and the owner name, viz. Forest Department, Government of Maharashtra, was replaced with that of the accused illegally. Some parcels of land were illegally sold to NHAI, for which Mhatre received illegal compensation of Rs 42.4 crore and Qadri received illegal compensation of Rs 9.69 crore. This pertains to the alleged illegal acquisition of forest land and its subsequent illegal transfer to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the ED stated.
