Bus gets stuck in road cave-in near Girgaon Metro site, none injured
A Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) electric bus got stuck in a road cave-in close to the Girgaon Metro construction site Monday morning, leaving passengers in panic. While no one was injured, there were around 40 passengers in the bus. The accident occurred about 9.30 am near the intersection of Dr Babasaheb Jaykar Marg and Jagannath Shankar Sheth (JSS) Road opposite the Thakurdwar signal, where construction is underway for Metro Line 3 underground Girgaon station. As per BEST officials, the rear left wheel of the bus, which was plying on route number 121 from Backbay Depot to J Mehta Marg, got stuck in a cave-in on the road. The electric bus runs under the banner of Tata Group company in BEST fleet. All the passengers were rescued safely, officials confirmed. 'No passenger was hurt in the accident,' said a BEST official. 'The bus was recovered with the help of a towing van and taken back to the depot.' Several local residents and eyewitnesses alleged that the pit was almost five-feet deep. The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), which is developing the underground corridor, stated the cave-in is believed to have been due to water ingress in the basement pit of an adjacent under-construction building. 'Water ingress was observed in the basement pit of the proposed Girgaon rehabilitation building, likely due to a nearby utility leakage. This seems to have caused ground-loss, forming a cavity that was not visible on the surface,' the MMRCL said in a statement. The agency added that it is also coordinating with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials to detect and seal any leakage in water mains, sewer lines or the storm water drainage system. 'Necessary measures are being taken to reinstate the affected road section at the earliest and to prevent any recurrence,' MMRCL added.

No injuries or casualties were reported, and all passengers were safely evacuated from the bus shortly after the incident. According to BEST spokesperson Sudas Sawant, 'Our bus on route 121 from the Backbay Depot got stuck around 10 am today. No passengers on the bus were injured. As the bus belongs to a private contractor, Tata, the company's officials have been instructed to promptly remove the bus from the pit.' According to sources, the bus was later pulled out and towed away. Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) stated that water had entered the basement pit of the proposed rehabilitation building, likely due to a leak from a nearby underground utility line. This may have caused erosion beneath the surface, leading to the cavity that was not visible from above. 'The cavity was not visible on the surface. The incident occurred early in the morning and was managed swiftly,' said an MMRCL official. MMRCL is working with Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to identify and repair any leaks in the area's water main, sewer line, or storm water drain (SWD) system. Officials said that repairs to the damaged road section are in progress, and steps are being taken to prevent a repeat of such incidents. The Girgaon site is one of several locations where rehabilitation buildings are being developed for Metro Line 3, which will link Colaba to SEEPZ via Bandra, forming an underground north–south rapid transit route through Mumbai.

Hinjewadi civic woes: PMRDA to ensure median gaps to prevent waterlogging

The decision comes following complaints of flooding during recent heavy rain. PMRDA commissioner Yogesh Mhase told TOI on Saturday that the move follows consultations with the traffic police, after multiple stretches in Hinjewadi witnessed water accumulation, disrupting traffic. "If there are adequate gaps, water will not clog," Mhase said, adding that work is already underway at several stretches to address the issue. He directed the Metro project concessionaire to clear all construction debris from roads, footpaths, and stormwater drains by June 22. "The work is in progress but has slowed due to persistent rain. However, efforts are being made at multiple locations along the corridor," he said. Median gaps have already been created in some areas, and trench work is also being carried out. Devendra Fadnavis launches NCM card for Mumbai Metro Line 3 passengers
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday launched the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, in a move to unify the city's public transport system. The contactless RuPay NCM card that can be operated from Wednesday allows passengers to ride seamlessly between Metro Line 3 stations, from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk, without standing in long queues at ticketing counters. It is completely interoperable with other key Mumbai Metro lines — Line 1, Line 2A, and Line 7 — along with other transportation systems like Chalo Buses, providing a smooth multi-modal travel experience. The launch was held in the presence of Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik, and other senior officials. The initiative by the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) is being executed in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the State Bank of India (SBI). The existing commuters who already possess NCMC cards from SBI or other players can use their cards on Line 3 from Wednesday, officials said. New riders may get a free card from any Metro Line 3 station or SBI branches that are participating, with a minimum top-up of Rs 100 and a maximum of Rs 2,000, they added. Addressing the launch, MMRC Managing Director Ashwini Bhide stated, 'The NCMC card integration in Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a significant milestone in our path towards smart and commuter-centric urban transport. Being the city's first totally underground Metro corridor, Line 3 is planned with future-proof infrastructure and this contactless payment solution with ease is an integral part of that vision. We are excited to collaborate with NPCI and SBI to facilitate a seamless, hassle-free travel experience for Mumbaikars and enable the Government of India's National Common Mobility Card programme.'

NCMC card for seamless tap & travel on Metro 3 launched
Mumbai: The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRC) on Monday launched the RuPay National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) for Metro Line 3 commuters. The NCMC card, introduced in partnership with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the State Bank of India (SBI), allows passengers to "tap and travel" across Metro Line 3's operational stretch—from Aarey JVLR to Acharya Atre Chowk. The card offers a secure, cashless travel solution and aims to eliminate queues at ticket counters. The launch event was held in the presence of state CM Devendra Fadnavis and DCMs Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, and other top dignitaries. MMRC managing director Ashwini Bhide said, "The integration of NCMC with Mumbai Metro Line 3 is a significant milestone in building future-ready, smart infrastructure." The NCMC card will also be interoperable across Metro Lines 1, 2A, and 7, as well as with other transport systems such as the Chalo bus service. Cards issued by these operators can also be used at Line 3 stations, ensuring a unified transit experience. Existing NCMC cardholders can begin using cards on Line 3 from June 11. New users can get the cards at any of the seven Line 3 stations or designated SBI branches. The cards will be issued for free with a mandatory initial top-up of Rs 100.
