Samsuri wants to focus on GE16, says PAS leader

PAS vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said he is stepping down as the Marang division's commissioner as the time has come for someone else to be at the helm. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A PAS leader said that vice-president Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar's decision to step down as the party's Marang commissioner could have been prompted by his intention to focus on the 16th general election. Terengganu PAS committee member Hanafiah Mat said Samsuri has a 'huge mission' ahead of him, referring to the next nationwide polls. 'He needs to fully focus on preparing for the 16th general election in order to change the country's political landscape,' Hanafiah told FMT. He said the Terengganu menteri besar must also focus on administering the state. Earlier today, it was reported that Samsuri had announced that he was stepping down as the division's commissioner, a role he has held since 2019. He was reported as saying that the time has come for someone else to be at the helm. Separately, PAS spiritual adviser Hashim Jasin said Samsuri's decision to step down as Marang commissioner was a non-issue since he is still a party vice-president and the Terengganu menteri besar. 'Many would do the same as they want to focus on their other (more important) roles,' he said. Samsuri's decision to step down as the Marang PAS commissioner comes two months after posters were put up in Terengganu demanding that he resign as menteri besar, which analysts said could be linked to the party polls in September. Samsuri had resigned as Perikatan Nasional treasurer in December last year.

By-election not worth time or money, says Tengku Zafrul

Tengku Zafrul Aziz denied having discussions for a by-election to pave the way for him to become Selangor menteri besar. PETALING JAYA : Tengku Zafrul Aziz has dismissed speculation of an impending by-election in Selangor to pave the way for him to become menteri besar. Tengku Zafrul, who is investment, trade and industry minister, said no such discussions for a by-election had taken place and it was never a factor in his decision to quit Umno. 'I do not support triggering by-elections without urgent necessity as they incur time and public funds,' he said in a statement. Tengku Zafrul announced his decision to resign as an Umno member, as well as from all party posts, on May 30. He also expressed his intention to join PKR. Tengku Zafrul today said he would continue carrying out his responsibilities until the end of this year. 'As for my position as a minister, I leave this entirely to the discretion of the prime minister. I remain ready to serve the nation in any capacity.' He also reaffirmed that his decision to leave Umno was entirely his own and made without coercion. 'In a democratic society, every individual has the right to make personal choices. I deeply appreciate all the feedback and acceptance extended to me in response to this decision,' Tengku Zafrul said. There has been much speculation over his fate as minister as his final term as senator expires at the end of the year. Also, there is talk of a Cabinet reshuffle following the resignation of Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad from their respective ministerial posts. In a Facebook video previously, former Umno leader Isham Jalil claimed that Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari would be ordered to vacate his Sungai Tua seat to allow Tengku Zafrul to contest in the by-election. Winning the by-election could then allow Tengku Zafrul to take over as menteri besar, as speculated previously, while Amirudin could join Anwar's Cabinet as he is also the Gombak MP at present. Amirudin has also denied speculation that he is set to vacate his state seat to make way for Tengku Zafrul, describing it as just empty talk based on the 'wild imagination' of certain individuals who were seeking to spread that narrative via social media. The PKR vice-president also said he did not want to see a repeat of the 'Kajang Move' in 2014, which culminated in the late Abdul Khalid Ibrahim resigning as the then Selangor menteri besar. FMT quoted political analyst James Chin as saying that any move to get Amirudin to vacate his seat to make way for Tengku Zafrul would damage PKR's image in the eyes of voters and grassroots members.

Selangor Pakatan rallies behind MB Amirudin Shari as replacement rumours fly

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari secured the full support of the Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders to remain the state menteri besar for the full term. The show of unity comes amid swirling rumours that Investment Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's entry into PKR could shake up the Selangor government line-up. 'We, representing the component parties of Pakatan Harapan in the state of Selangor, express our full and unwavering support for YAB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to remain as the Selangor Menteri Besar until the end of the current term of administration,' DAP's Ng Sze Han, Amanah's Izham Hashim, and PKR's Borhan Aman Shah said in a joint statement this evening. The trio stressed that Selangor's stability depends on continuity in leadership and highlighted projects like the Second Selangor Plan and the state's third port in Pulau Carey. 'Continuity in the state's top leadership will send a positive signal to investors and the business community in Selangor,' they added. The trio further praised Amirudin's role in steering Selangor's economy and supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Malaysia Madani agenda. 'His experience and leadership have been key to the unity that led to victory and the formation of the Unity Government in Selangor during the recent State Election,' Ng, Izham, and Borhan said. Amirudin had earlier played down the speculation, describing it as 'a long shot' as a by-election would have to be held for a leadership change mid-term. He also said that he had light-heartedly asked Tengku Zafrul to pray for his job security during the latter's pilgrimage. 'We only have about two and a half years left in the term, so there isn't much room to manoeuvre,' Amirudin said. Recommended reading: Tengku Zafrul replacing me?
