Selangor Pakatan rallies behind MB Amirudin Shari as replacement rumours fly

Malay Mail31-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 — Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari secured the full support of the Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders to remain the state menteri besar for the full term.
The show of unity comes amid swirling rumours that Investment Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz's entry into PKR could shake up the Selangor government line-up.
'We, representing the component parties of Pakatan Harapan in the state of Selangor, express our full and unwavering support for YAB Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari to remain as the Selangor Menteri Besar until the end of the current term of administration,' DAP's Ng Sze Han, Amanah's Izham Hashim, and PKR's Borhan Aman Shah said in a joint statement this evening.
The trio stressed that Selangor's stability depends on continuity in leadership and highlighted projects like the Second Selangor Plan and the state's third port in Pulau Carey.
'Continuity in the state's top leadership will send a positive signal to investors and the business community in Selangor,' they added.
The trio further praised Amirudin's role in steering Selangor's economy and supporting Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's Malaysia Madani agenda.
'His experience and leadership have been key to the unity that led to victory and the formation of the Unity Government in Selangor during the recent State Election,' Ng, Izham, and Borhan said.
Amirudin had earlier played down the speculation, describing it as 'a long shot' as a by-election would have to be held for a leadership change mid-term.
He also said that he had light-heartedly asked Tengku Zafrul to pray for his job security during the latter's pilgrimage.
'We only have about two and a half years left in the term, so there isn't much room to manoeuvre,' Amirudin said.

Heavy vehicles which damage roads should be taxed more, says expert

The works ministry said it faces financial constraints in repairing high-risk roads nationwide, including the East-West Highway. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A road safety expert has urged the government to consider increasing taxes on heavy vehicles such as lorries and trailers, which are the main culprits behind road damage, and channel the revenue for repairs. Law Teik Hua of Universiti Putra Malaysia's road safety research centre said the heavier tax could help the works ministry offset the cost of road maintenance, which is estimated to reach RM4 billion annually. 'This measure should be implemented alongside stricter enforcement mechanisms, such as the installation of weigh-in systems at strategic locations, and steps to ensure the increased tax burden does not fall on end-users,' he told FMT. On Wednesday, the works ministry said it faced financial constraints in repairing high-risk roads nationwide, including the East-West Highway, because of costs nearing RM4 billion. Its minister, Alexander Nanta Linggi, previously acknowledged that heavy vehicles carrying excessive loads were the main cause of road damage, particularly potholes. Law also mooted heavier fines and licence suspensions for transport companies that repeatedly exceed weight limits. 'The government should also consider applying the 'polluter pays' principle, whereby fines are directly channelled into a dedicated road maintenance fund. 'In addition, a blacklist system should be introduced for repeat offenders to curb habitual violations,' he said. He said all funds collected must be managed transparently and subject to audit. To promote a culture of compliance, Law suggested that the government could offer incentives such as tax rebates or official recognition for companies that consistently followed the rules. To reduce damage caused by overloaded vehicles, the works ministry could also adopt more durable construction technologies such as geosynthetics or modified asphalt in road building, he said. Wan Agyl Wan Hassan, founder of transport think tank My Mobility Vision, proposed a special levy or road-use tax for heavy vehicles, similar to systems implemented in Germany, Switzerland and New Zealand. He said such levies were calculated based on the vehicle's weight and travel distance. 'The tax revenue should go into a dedicated road maintenance fund, used exclusively by the works ministry for road repairs and upkeep. 'Fines collected from overloading violations should also go directly into this fund and not be absorbed into the federal government's consolidated fund,' he said. Wan Agyl said it was essential to ensure revenue from violations was used to repair damage caused specifically by heavy vehicles. 'Without such a mechanism, the ministry will remain burdened with high repair costs while funds from enforcement penalties are lost in the general budget. 'This is not about punishing the logistics industry but about protecting public infrastructure. Without proper accountability, roads are being abused while the public ends up footing the bill through general taxation,' he said.

Anwar: 13MP success hinges on unity and coordination across ministries

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has stressed that the success of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) hinges on proper coordination and preparedness across all government ministries and agencies. Anwar, who is also the Finance Minister, said every administrative machinery must act in unison as one national team to implement policies grounded in reality and designed to meet future challenges. "The 13MP was drafted following continuous discussions among ministries, central agencies and state governments over the past few months," said Anwar, who chaired the Special Cabinet Meeting today to review the framework and key initiatives of the plan. He said the 13MP — a key document that will shape the country's development over the next five years — is scheduled to be tabled in the Dewan Rakyat at the end of next month. During the meeting, Anwar also gave ministers and senior officials the opportunity to contribute ideas and suggestions to sharpen the plan's implementation. "The 13MP is a continuation of the reforms driven by the MADANI Government over the past two years, based on the aspirations of the MADANI Economy — to restructure the economic framework, elevate the status, dignity and well-being of the people, and build a more just, sustainable and resilient nation," he said. — BERNAMA
