Meagan Good's South African adventure: a family affair at the Dreamers Exchange Festival

Accompanied by her sister, La'Myia Good, and their cousin, filmmaker Dijon Talton, the trio made a grand entrance that has been the talk of the town. 'Touchdown South Africa - the cousins have arrived! Dreamers, let's give them the warmest welcome as they join us for this incredible experience,' Good posted on social media, setting the tone for what was to become a remarkable weekend. Upon arrival at the airport, the celebrity cousins were treated to a heartfelt serenade of traditional Vhavenda song and dance. This show of cultural pride exemplified the warm hospitality for which South Africa is renowned. Their journey took them next to The Pavilion at the Cradle of Humankind, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located just north of Johannesburg, where they participated in the much-anticipated Dreamers Exchange Festival. Among those they mingled with were Lusanda Mbane, JT Medupe, and Meshack Mavuso Magabane, showcasing a beautiful blend of Hollywood glamour and South African talent. How ‘Rebel Ridge' became the Emmy frontrunner for Best TV Movie
Is Rebel Ridge about to follow in the Emmy-winning footsteps of Quiz Lady, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and ... Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers? The Netflix telefilm has held the No. 1 spot in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie odds all season long, despite increasingly fierce competition from the likes of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Out of My Mind, Mountainhead, Am I OK?, and The Gorge. Why? Perhaps Rebel Ridge is still coasting off its awards juice from earlier in the season, where it claimed prizes at the Critics Choice Awards (Best TV Movie) and Image Awards (Best Actor for Aaron Pierre), and scored nominations from the Producers Guild and Writers Guild, among others. On the TV front, he's best known for directing and producing True Detective Season 3, which was considered a return to form for the HBO limited series. With Saulnier in charge, Rebel Ridge is a few notches above your everyday TV movie. Gold Derby This Emmy category has drawn backlash in recent years, particularly with light-hearted fare like Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022) and Dolly Parton's Christmas on the Square (2021) winning. Contemporary TV movies are rarely nominated in other categories, suggesting a general weakness for this fare both above- and below-the-line. One notable exception was 2023's well-respected Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a satiric biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe as the Grammy-winning musician, brought a sense of cachet back to the race with its eight nominations and two wins (Best TV Movie and Best Music Composition). That was followed by Quiz Lady last year, a dramedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as estranged sisters who try to win money to pay off their mother's debt that received decidedly mixed reviews and no nominations outside the category. But as the first phase of Emmy voting nears, there are signs that the race could tighten. If Gold Derby's odds are any indication, the current lineup of Best TV Movie contenders could result in one of the category's most exciting Emmy races in years. The first three films made $759 million worldwide in theaters, but this latest installment was only released theatrically overseas. Here in the United States, it can be streamed on Peacock. Mountainhead is Jesse Armstrong's highly anticipated first film project since winning seven Emmy Awards for Succession (four for writing, three for producing). The HBO movie follows four wealthy tech billionaires — played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef — who meet at a swanky ski resort amid a global crisis. It'll be released on May 31, the last day of Emmy eligibility. Out of My Mind, like Rebel Ridge, is a TV movie that's already hit it big on the awards circuit. It received noms at the Critics Choice and Writers Guild Awards, and won for Amber Sealey at the Directors Guild Awards. It also claimed the Peabody Award for Children's/Youth Program and the Television Academy Honors for inspiring social change. The Disney+ film stars Phoebe-Rae Taylor as a middle schooler with cerebral palsy whose inner thoughts are spoken by Jennifer Aniston. Of all the films in the category, Out of My Mind has seen the biggest spike in predictions in recent days and is trending upwards at the perfect time, narrowing the gap with Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and closing in on second place in the odds. Seemingly a riff on Wings of Desire, Good Fortune follows an angel Gabriel (played by a winged Keanu Reeves), who is looking for more meaning in his work. He finds Arj, played by Ansari, who is a lost soul, peeing in bottles while working for a thinly veiled Amazon-like company. ODU Celebrates More than 2,700 Graduates During its 142nd Commencement Exercises
Norfolk, VA, May 10, 2025 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- More than 2,700 students joined the ranks of Monarch alumni during Old Dominion University's 142nd commencement exercises this weekend. Family members and friends cheered on their graduates at ceremonies across campus recognizing the hard work and success they have achieved during their journeys at Old Dominion University. Close to 2,100 students gathered for the Main Undergraduate Ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on May 10 at Kornblau Field in S.B. Ballard Stadium. The event celebrated graduates of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology, the Darden College of Education and Professional Studies, the Ellmer College of Health Sciences, Ellmer School of Nursing, the Strome College of Business, the College of Arts and Letters, the College of Sciences and the School of Cybersecurity. 'Please know that, like everyone here today, I am immensely proud of each of you — members of Old Dominion University's Class of 2025,' said President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. 'As your membership in the Monarch Nation evolves with today's transition from students to alumni, that pride will continue to grow in the years to come. Congratulations to all of you!' The University bestowed an honorary doctorate of humane letters during the ceremony to award-winning actress, director and producer Meagan Good, who served as the featured speaker. Good began her remarks by talking about the many challenges she faced growing up in a small community in California. 'I was labeled a whirlwind of identities, none of which truly fit,' she said. 'But here's the thing: in that space of isolation, I discovered the power of authenticity. I realized that my uniqueness or difference wasn't a flaw — it was my strength.' Good, who began her career as a child actress and went on to star in television shows, music videos and feature films, including the 'Think Like a Man' series and 'Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy,' encouraged the Class of 2025 to embrace their uniqueness. 'Because the world doesn't need another copy; it needs the original you,' she said. She described how setbacks in her journey as an actress — from nervous auditions to challenging roles — ultimately prepared her for something far greater and truly unimaginable. 'Perception is everything,' she said. 'Perception is actually reality. Embrace the lessons and perceive them as gifts to grow you stronger.' Good cautioned graduates not to rush to their destinations because, 'the journey — the highs, the lows, these lessons — that is where the magic happens.' She also enlisted graduates to lift others as they climb and to never sacrifice their integrity: 'Real success isn't just about reaching our vision of the top; it's about bringing others with you.' In closing, Good reflected on a time in her career when she questioned whether she was on the right path. After praying for guidance, she found clarity to know that 'I will win.' 'And standing here before you today, this — speaking life over and into the next generation — is a huge part of that purpose,' she said. 'It is one of the greatest honors of my life. To know every single part of the journey has never been in vain, but only a gift to remind you through experience. You, too, will win.' The University also bestowed an honorary doctorate of public service to The Honorable Don Scott, who represents the 88th district in Virginia's House of Delegates. In 2024, he was elected as the first Black speaker of the House of Delegates in the state's 400-year history. Speaker Scott served as a U.S. Navy officer and earned his law degree from Louisiana State University. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates from Portsmouth in 2019 and was chosen as House Democratic Leader in 2022 before his selection as House Speaker last year. His unanimous election as speaker wasn't just symbolic – it reflected his ability to bring people together and to lead with both principle and purpose. Speaker Scott is a passionate and tireless champion for major investments in public education, criminal justice reform, affordable healthcare, and policies that fuel economic opportunity across the commonwealth. New this year, graduates moved across campus to individual college and school ceremonies after the main undergraduate ceremony. The individual ceremonies provided graduates the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their closest peers and faculty mentors. Locations included S.B. Ballard Stadium, as well as Kaufman Mall, the Perry Library green space and Chartway Arena. Instead, he shared four suggestions for the soon-to-be-graduates. First, he encouraged them to be lifelong learners and keep an open mind as they navigate life. Second, Dr. Ford urged them to travel, experience new cultures and be a 'valuable citizen of the world.' Third, he said to be humble and keep a collaborative spirit when working with others. Last, he acknowledged the loved ones and supporters who helped the students achieve their educational goals.
