Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Pittsburgh Steelers waited all offseason for an answer from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While fans were getting frustrated with the wait, it paid off. Rodgers agreed to a one-year deal with the Steelers ahead of mandatory minicamp. He then proceeded to show up and got to work immediately after signing his deal. Pittsburgh has its new starting quarterback. Heading into the 2025 NFL season, there are a lot of questions surrounding the Steelers and Rodgers. Can he be the guy that leads Pittsburgh back to Super Bowl contention? Some believe he can, others simply don't see that happening. Aller/Getty Images There are also questions about how long this marriage will last between the two parties. Is Rodgers going to be the Steelers' quarterback for just the 2025 season? Will he continue his career and keep playing in 2026? Read more: Steelers QB Aaron Rodgers Receives Major Disrespect From NFL Analyst No one knows the answer to that question. Despite that fact, Pittsburgh has already been linked to making a massive move for Rodgers' future replacement. Bleacher Report analyst Brad Gagnon has predicted that the Steelers will pull off a shocking trade deadline deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for quarterback Baker Mayfield. Gagnon believes that if the Buccaneers fall off in 2025, they could consider trading Mayfield. He thinks Pittsburgh would jump at the opportunity to acquire a quarterback who could lead the way long past the upcoming campaign. On the outside in, this seems like an impossible prediction. Mayfield has latched on as the clear franchise quarterback in Tampa Bay. He has had back-to-back big years for the Buccaneers and it would be extremely shocking to see the team move on from him. Read more: Steelers, TJ Watt Situation Gets Huge Update From NFL Insider Mayfield is coming off of a 2024 season with Tampa Bay that saw him complete 71.4 percent of his pass attempts for 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. It just doesn't seem likely at all that the Buccaneers would trade him this season. While there are no guarantees in the NFL, Mayfield sticking with Tampa Bay seems almost a lock. However, if he were made available, the Steelers could make sense as a trade suitor. Again, this is just an idea at this point. It's an extremely bold and aggressive prediction that more than likely will not come true. But, it's an intriguing thought. For more Pittsburgh Steelers and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Baker Mayfield tabbed as dark horse for major NFL honor in 2025
Baker Mayfield tabbed as dark horse for major NFL honor in 2025 For a litany of reasons, the 2024 season for Baker Mayfield was one to remember. He set career highs across the board, and it sent him to his second straight Pro Bowl with the Bucs. He is poised for a major payday in his next contract. Now, heading into the 2025 season, the Bucs brought back all his offensive weapons after re-signing Chris Godwin. They also added a first-round wide receiver in Emeka Egbuka who promises to be one of the better players on offense now and in the future of the team. All of this has folks think, could Mayfield find himself adding some hardware to his house to join his Heisman Trophy? NFL Media's Judy Battista made her list of dark horse MVP candidates this week, and making the cut was the Bucs signal caller. For Mayfield, she argues, "Often overlooked, Mayfield got two fifth-place votes last season, but he deserves deeper consideration. . . .Mayfield will have to overcome two things to get more serious consideration. He will have his third play-caller in as many seasons with the Buccaneers, after Liam Coen left to become the Jaguars' head coach. (New OC Josh Grizzard was the passing game coordinator last year in Tampa.) And then there's the fact that the Bucs play in the NFC South, considered one of the weakest divisions in the game. . ." Luckily for Mayfield, despite playing in the NFC South, he will be facing off against the likes of the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, and the defending Super Bowl champion, the Philadelphia Eagles. Those three matchups alone could be enough to get people taking him seriously as an MVP candidate.

What if Josh Grizzard doesn't mesh well with Baker Mayfield in 2025?
What if Josh Grizzard doesn't mesh well with Baker Mayfield in 2025? Baker Mayfield is coming off the best year of his career in the box score, though he would happily trade it in for a playoff run with the Bucs. For the team in 2025, he is going to be tied once again to them having a make-or-break season, but ultimately, he could be the face of their worst-case scenario if you listen to Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine. He recently wrote about each team's worst-case scenario for the upcoming season and for the Bucs it centered around their Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and their new play caller. He lays out a scenario that Bucs fans do not want to entertain: a Baker Mayfield regression. He writes, "Mayfield has been on an upward trajectory since joining the Bucs in 2023, but it's worth noting that year-to-year consistency has been an issue for him. His Browns career was marred by his inability to be the best version of himself every year. Unfortunately, a lot of that could be tied to turbulent coaching situations. The Browns didn't give him a lot of stability, and he hasn't enjoyed much of it since then. On one hand, that means he's used to working with a new coach just about every year. On the other, there seems to be a pattern of Mayfield only performing well when he has a good coach orchestrating the offense. . ." Grizzard being with the Bucs last season should increase his chances of being able to continue his success with Mayfield. When you consider that he was his passing game coordinator in 2024, the continuity should be able to be found once again, even if it takes a few weeks with the new role. Not to mention, Jason Licht made sure that Mayfield had all of his weapons back, as well as giving him another in first-round pick, Emeka Egbuka.

Haason Reddick Speaks Out On Buccaneers QB
Haason Reddick Speaks Out On Buccaneers QB originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers edge rusher Haason Reddick knows how good Baker Mayfield is. Even before he signed a one-year deal to join the Bucs, Reddick had gotten a personal look at how deadly the former first-overall pick could be. Advertisement As Tampa Bay's franchise quarterback, Mayfield has already destroyed one of Reddick's defenses. During the 2023 playoffs, Mayfield's Buccaneers destroyed Reddick's Eagles by a 32-9 score. Two years later, the two are now on the same side, and Mayfield is already impressing Reddick. Following last week's minicamp, Reddick spoke glowingly about Mayfield as a quarterback and leader. "A warrior. A hard-fought guy. I respect Baker a lot because he's another person in this league who has had ups and downs and continues striving to be as great as he wants to be or strives for greatness," Reddick said. "I have tremendous respect for him. I love his game. I do think he has a warrior's mentality and I think he's one of the QBs in this league that's on the more physical end." Mayfield is a former top overall pick with plenty of playoff experience. He was the first quarterback to win a playoff game for the Cleveland Browns after they returned to the league in 1999. Advertisement He has now become the face of the Buccaneers thanks to two straight division titles in the NFC South behind him. Reddick knows Mayfield well. While the two have had plenty of battles in recent seasons, they are both on the same team and trying to win a Super Bowl together. If Mayfield's toughness is any indication, the Buccaneers are closer than people realize to that mark.
