Last Updated: Manpreet was celebrated ahead of the game as the Australians gave the Indian a guard of honour before presenting him with an honorary jersey. Star Indian hockey player Manpreet Singh made history on Sunday with his 400th cap for the Indian national side in their FIH Pro League fixture against Australia at Antwerp, Belgium, in the European leg of the event. Manpreet was celebrated ahead of the game as the Australians gave the Indian a guard of honour before presenting him with an honorary jersey. — Kookaburras (@Kookaburras) June 15, 2025 The jersey handed to Manpreet by Australian player Eddie Ockenden, who also has over 400 international appearances for the Kookaburras, read, 'Congratulations, Manpreet. 400 Games, Incredible- From the Kookaburras." Manpreet, who was visibly moved by the gesture reflected on his illustrious career that began in Punjab. 'I still remember the goosebumps I felt in my debut game. To be standing here, 400 games later, is beyond anything I imagined," the 32-year-old said. 'This milestone is shared with every coach who pushed me, every teammate who backed me, and every fan who believed in me when I needed it most," he continued. 'I'm still learning, still growing – and I play with the same hunger today as I did at 19," the star player added. Team India ended up suffering a 2-3 defeat to the Australians who completed the double over India in Antwerp in consecutive days, condemning India to their sixth straight defeat in the European leg of the FIH Pro League. Indian had to endure a testing time in the European leg of the tournament as they went down 1-2 to the Netherlands on the 7th of June at Amstelveen before succumbing to yet another 2-3 defeat at the hands of the hosts a couple of days later. Argentina compounded India's woes with a 4-3 victory, before repeating the feat with another 2-1 win over the Men In Blue at the Wagener Hockey Stadium. First Published: June 18, 2025, 09:31 IST

India go down 2-3 to Australia in FIH Hockey Pro League

Antwerp (Belgium), June 16 (UNI) Talisman Manpreet Singh's 400th milestone international match didn't go as he would have hoped, with India going down 2-3 to Australia in the ongoing FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 (Men) match here. It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India on Sunday. After getting off to a fine start, with an opening goal coming only in the third minute through the handy work of Sanjay who picked up the rebound from a PC to put India ahead by 1-0, India lost the lead with Australia responding swiftly with an equaliser in the very next minute. It was Tim Brand who scored in a sensational fashion and only seconds later, they stunned India with a second goal through Blake Govers. There was little India goalie Krishan Pathak could do to stop the blazing Aussie attack. It was perhaps one of the fastest 10 minutes in any game this far in the European leg of the tournament, with both teams living up to the billing producing a high-octane encounter. At the first quarter break, Australia was in lead by 2-1 and extended it to 3-1 when Cooper Burns struck one past Pathak in the 18th minute. This goal put India under the pump with Australia attempting to increase their advantage with fast-paced attack. The next few minutes saw both team trade PCs but neither found success, ending the first half with Australia leading by two goals. Following the ten-minute break, India returned with fresh vigour to reduce the deficit. Good stick work was on display when Abhishek set up Dilpreet to score a fine field goal in the 36th minute. This was an important goal to keep India in the hunt but Australian defence was relentless, not allowing any loop-sided marking in the circle. With just one goal difference between the two sides, it was going to be a nail-biting final quarter. There were a few moments that could have brought India back in the fold with an equaliser but they couldn't capitalize on the chances. Australia did well to restrict India in the final stretch to pick up the crucial winning points from this game. "It is unfortunate we have lost six back-to-back matches here. It has never happened before but if you see, all these games have been very close and we have done well overall but have not been able to finish well. This is something we will deliberate on and try to bounce back in the upcoming matches," stated Manpreet Singh after the game. UNI BM

Australia's ultimate gesture for India hockey great Manpreet Singh: Guard of honour, signed jersey on 400th appearance

When 19-year-old Manpreet Singh sprinted across the turf wearing the senior Indian team jersey for the first time in 2011, Indian hockey was in its best health. Fourteen years later, the team has gone through multiple transitions and has vastly improved, winning back-to-back Olympic bronze medals at the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. At the helm of it all was Manpreet, towering through the midfield region. June 15, 2015, marked another red letter in the illustrious career of Manpreet Singh. He became only the second Indian to play 400 international matches in the FIH Pro League match against Australia in Antwerp, Belgium. His biggest reward? The respect shown to him by the Australian players, who lined up along with the Indian players and gave Manpreet a Guard of Honour as he made his way off the pitch with a big smile. Generally, a guard of honour is given to an athlete playing his last match but Australia decided to bestow the honour on Manpreet on his 400th appearance. Australian midfielder Eddie Ockenden, a proud member of the 400 club, which has only eight members, including Manpreet, also presented him with a signed Australian jersey. Hailing from Mithapur, Punjab, a region deeply embedded in Indian hockey folklore, 33-year-old Manpreet Singh has been the heartbeat of India's midfield for over a decade. Over the course of his illustrious career, Manpreet has helped India clinch multiple major titles, including: 4 Asian Champions Trophy gold medals (2013, 2018, 2023, 2024) 2 Asian Games gold medals (2014, 2023) 2 Olympic bronze medals (Tokyo 2020, Paris 2024) 2 Commonwealth Games silver medals (2014, 2022) Podium finishes in the FIH World League (2014–15, 2016–17) and Hockey Champions Trophy (2018) He has also been the recipient of numerous individual accolades, including the Arjuna Award (2018), FIH Men's Player of the Year (2019), and Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award (2021), among others. Speaking on the achievement, an emotional Manpreet said: 'I still remember the goosebumps I felt in my debut game. To be standing here, 400 games later, is beyond anything I imagined. This milestone is shared with every coach who pushed me, every teammate who backed me, and every fan who believed in me when I needed it most. I'm still learning, still growing — and I play with the same hunger today as I did at 19.' Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey, who himself holds the national record for the most international appearances, lauded Manpreet's consistency and dedication: 'Very few athletes achieve this level of endurance. Manpreet has been the spine of Indian hockey through its most transformative decade. His fitness, leadership, and composure under pressure set him apart. We are proud to see him carry forward the legacy with such grace.' Manpreet's milestone day, however, did not change India's fortunes in the FIH Pro League as they went down 2-3. It was goals by Tim Brand (4'), Blake Govers (5') and Cooper Burns (18') that set up the victory for Australia, while Sanjay (3') and Dilpreet Singh (36') scored for India.

Mohali police conduct operation CASO in Peer Muchhalla societies

Mohali: As part of its ongoing crackdown on anti-social elements, the police conducted a massive cordon and search operation under operation CASO in various residential societies of Peer Muchhalla on Sunday morning. The operation was carried out under the directives of DGP, Punjab, and SSP Mohali. Over 350 police personnel were deployed for simultaneous checks across multiple societies, including Pink City, Royal Mansion 2, and Metro Town, between 6:30 am and 9:00 am. Mohali SP Manpreet Singh, who led the operation, said the action was part of a broader campaign to weed out anti-social elements and ensure public safety. "During the search, special attention was paid to suspicious individuals, vehicles, and unattended items. Vehicles that appeared to be parked for extended periods were verified to rule out any criminal activity," said the SP. Inspector Jashanpreet Singh, in-charge of Dhakoli police station, confirmed that no suspicious objects were recovered during the operation. However, eight individuals were detained for verification from various societies. "They were later released after questioning, as nothing incriminating was found against them," he said. The police have assured residents that such surprise checks will continue in the coming days to build a sense of security in the area and prevent the harbouring of criminals in residential spaces. The police have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
