"Will 2027 Census follow Telangana model or is India staring at another Jumla?": Congress MP Manickam Tagore raises questions on Census 2027

New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): Raising questions on the Census 2027, Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Monday questioned Union Home Minister whether the Census data would follow the Telangana model or if the country was staring at another 'Jumla.' 'Dear Mr. Amit Shah, will the 2027 Caste Census follow the Telangana model, or is India staring at another Jumla? The first caste census since 1931 has been officially notified. But we have questions. Big ones. And the country deserves answers,' the post on social media X read. Tagore also questioned the government, asking if it was following the Telangana model or avoiding it for political convenience. He also raised questions if the Census 2027 would release full caste data, including the OBCs or would it be another round of data collection. 'Will your government release the full caste data this time, including OBC sub-categorisation? Or will it be another round of data collection without justice?' the post further read. Tagore also raised questions on what was stopping the Government from having a precise and transparent Census. Furthermore, Tagore questioned if the 2027 Census would become a tool of justice or would be another headline. 'Will the 2027 Census become a tool of justice, or just another headline? Mr. Shah, history is watching. India is waiting. And the OBCs will not settle for optics without outcomes,' he further wrote. Earlier in the day, the Central government notified that the Population census, the process of which will begin in March 2027. As per a gazette notification released by the Ministry of Home Affairs, 'In exercise of the powers conferred by Section three of the Census Act 1948 and in suppression of the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Home Affairs dated March 26, 2018, the Central Government declared that a census of the population of India shall be taken during the year 2027, as per a circular released by the Ministry of Home Affairs.' The notification said that the reference date for the census shall be March 1, 2027, except for the Union territory of Ladakh and the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Furthermore, the reference date for the Union Territory of Ladakh and snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand will be October 1, 2026. Bengaluru stampede: Congress accuses BJP of 'politicising tragedy' says

New Delhi [India], June 11 (ANI): In the wake of the recent stampede in Bengaluru and mounting pressure from the BJP demanding the resignation of Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Congress MP Manickam Tagore has firmly defended the state leadership and accused the BJP of politicising the incident. The Congress MP also drew a sharp contrast between the current administration's transparency and the BJP's handling of the stampede incident during Kumbh Mela 2025 and accused them of not reporting the deaths. Addressing reporters in Delhi on Wednesday, Congress MP Manickam Tagore expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and said, 'We all know that it was a very sad tragedy. A one-man judicial commission has been appointed, an honest judge has been appointed as the one-man commission. Already, the action has been taken on the City Police Commissioner and other officers concerned. The one-man commission will go into all the details and they will submit a report.' 'We should not do politics before that. We all know that BJP wants to do politics over that issue. But people of Karnataka are very clever. As Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge mentioned, we are not like BJP, which runs away from the real issues. They were not ready to report the deaths in Kumbh Mela (stampede). They did not appoint a judicial commission, no kind of inquiry was done. So, we are not like that. We always want the truth to come out,' he added. Reiterating the Congress party's commitment to responsible governance, he highlighted the experience of CM Siddaramaiah. 'The administration of Congress party in Karnataka is people-oriented and we know that CM is a leader who has experience of administration. So, he has appointed a one-man commission. Let the one-man commission submit a report and let the Govt take action,' he added. The Bengaluru stampede, which led to 11 casualties, has triggered a political storm in the state, with BJP leaders demanding accountability and the Chief Minister's resignation. The Karnataka Government on June 5 suspended top police officials at the Cubbon Park Police Station and formed a one-man commission under a retired High Court Judge to probe the incident. (ANI)

Madrasi Camp demolition example of BJP's betrayal of Tamils: Congress MP

VIRUDHUNAGAR: Virudhunagar MP Manickam Tagore on Monday said the demolition of houses at the Madrasi Camp in South Delhi is a clear example of the BJP government's betrayal of Tamil people. In a letter to PM Narendra Modi, Tagore also expressed concern over the Railway board's decision of freezing and surrendering funds sanctioned for several new projects, including Madurai-Thoothukudi (via Aruppukottai) Phase-II Broad Gauge Line Project, for which Rs 55.16 crore has been allocated in the 2025-26 budget. 'This project holds strategic and socio-economic significance for Tamil Nadu, especially for the districts of Madurai, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar. The project promises enhanced connectivity, economic revitalisation and employment generation in backward regions that have long awaited this vital rail link,' Tagore said.

"Why no revision for 8 years?": Manickam Tagore demands Centre revise income limit of OBC non-creamy layer

New Delhi [India], May 21 (ANI): Congress MP Manickam Tagore on Wednesday slammed the Centre for not making an upward revision in the income limit to determine the OBC non-creamy layer, which currently remains at Rs 8 lakh. The Congress MP said that this 'neglect' affected 'lakhs of families who are denied rightful access to education and job opportunities due to an outdated income cap'. 'Despite multiple demands, the income limit to determine the OBC non-creamy layer remains at Rs 8 lakh -- unchanged since 2017. As per the response from the Minister of Social Justice (dated 13 May 2025), there is no proposal under consideration even now. Why is there continued discrimination towards BCs? Inflation and income levels have risen over the years, but the criteria for availing OBC reservation benefits have not been updated. This neglect affects lakhs of families who are denied rightful access to education and job opportunities due to an outdated income cap. Why is the Government ignoring OBC welfare? Why no revision for 8 years?' Tagore posted on X. Meanwhile, in a matter pertaining to reservations for OBCs in Maharashtra, the Supreme Court orally remarked that reservations in the country are akin to a railway journey, where those who are already inside the train are now resisting the inclusion of others. 'Reservation business in this country has become like a railway. Those who have entered the coach, entered the bogey, they don't want anyone else to enter.', the top-court judge said, implying that such are the claims made by the petitioner before it. Senior Advocate Gopal Sankarnarayanan, appearing for the petitioner, argued that the assessment of social backwardness is relevant for constitutional reservations under Articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution of India. However, he contended that this criterion has nothing to do with regard to electoral reservations, which, as per the Supreme Court's ruling in the Krishnamoorthy case, require a separate determination of political backwardness. At this juncture, Justice Surya Kant remarked, 'When you follow the principle of inclusivity, the States are bound to identify more classes. There will be social backwards class, politically backwards class, and economically backwards classes. Why should they (any class) be deprived of the benefit? Why should it be confined to one particular family or group?' The Court was hearing a plea filed by one Mangesh Shankar Sasane, who raised the issue of OBC reservation granted in elections merely on the basis of social backwardness without ascertaining political backwardness of the concerned persons. Congress MP condemns Union Government for drastically reducing MGNREGS funds for Virudhunagar district

Congress MP B. Manickam Tagore, had condemned the Union Government for having drastically reducing the funds under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) for Virudhunagar district. Addressing reporters after chairing the DISHA meeting at the collectorate here on Thursday, Virudhunagar MP said that the funds were allocated for giving employment in rural areas for 2 crore mandays in 2022-23. 'However, in the last three years, it has been drastically reduced to 1.48 lakh mandays in 2023-24; 98 lakh mandays in 2024-25 and now 55 lakh mandays for 2025-26,' Mr. Tagore said. Charging that the Modi government was conspiring against the Virudhunagar district which did not have much agricultural work in rural areas. 'The men and women in the rural areas are now deprived of assured employment,' he said. The DISHA meeting discussed in length about various ongoing works funded by the Centre and the State along with officials and elected representatives, he said. The district administration has welcomed voluntary organisations to come forward to maintain the buildings of Government high schools and higher secondary schools. Such organisations can approach the Head of the respective school to know about the need. 'This project will help upgradation of the Government school buildings,' he added. The representatives of the voluntary organisations would be honoured by Virudhunagar district administration during the Independence Day celebrations, he added.
