Malik Nabers named New York Giants' top Offensive Player of the Year candidate
Malik Nabers named New York Giants' top Offensive Player of the Year candidate The New York Giants are hoping an improved quarterback situation will help star wideout Malik Nabers reach the upper echelon of wide receivers in the NFL. Coming off a historic campaign in which Nabers set the wide receiver record for receptions in a rookie season (109), it's easy to see why there's plenty of hype surrounding the 21-year-old. If not for the equally historic campaign from Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers, we would be discussing Nabers' rookie season as one of the best in recent history. When looking at each team's top candidate to win the Offensive Player of the Year Award, the decision was easy for Jacob Infante of Pro Football Network when it came to the Giants. Despite a disappointing season, the New York Giants seem to have found a franchise cornerstone in wide receiver Malik Nabers. As a rookie, he finished top 10 in the league in both receptions and receiving yards in a Pro Bowl campaign. With improved QB play expected in New York, Nabers could do even more damage this season. Winning the prestigious award is incredibly difficult, especially for a young wide receiver. Only three wide receivers since 2000 have earned the award. Otherwise, it's essentially an award for quarterbacks and running backs. Nabers does have the chance to put together an elite career after what he showed during the 2024 season. Even if Russell Wilson is a shell of his former self as a 10-time Pro Bowler, he should be a vast improvement over what the Giants had under center last season. A betting man likely wouldn't put his money on Nabers winning the award, but this is just a reminder of how vital the young superstar is to the Giants' offense.

3 New York Giants named fantasy football 'super sleepers'
The New York Giants made major changes to the quarterback room this offseason. After trading back into the first round of the 2025 NFL draft to select Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, head coach Brian Daboll made it clear that veteran free agent acquisition, Russell Wilson, would be the starter when the season began in the fall. Advertisement Many believe that, even at age 36, Wilson has a chance to raise the Giants' offense to a level fans can be excited about. In fact, CBS Sports has highlighted a few players from the team's passing game that could be deep sleepers in 2025, including Wilson. Giants Russell Wilson, QBWan'Dale Robinson, WRDarius Slayton, WR Hopefully Wilson provides competent quarterback play to support this passing game, especially when it comes to Malik Nabers. But on his own, Wilson might prove to be a waiver wire option, and he has averaged at least 20.0 Fantasy points in 10 of 13 seasons in his career and only one year with fewer than 18.6 Fantasy points. Robinson had six games in 2024 with at least 13.1 PPR points, and Slayton's big-play ability might thrive with Wilson. You can draft Robinson in Round 15 based on FantasyPros, Wilson's ADP is Round 16 and Slayton is available in Round 18. Obviously, with the offense built around a superstar in the making, Malik Nabers, he wouldn't fit into the category of a fantasy sleeper. However, Nabers may be the key reason the other three made the list. After just one year, Nabers may be the most talented receiver Wilson has ever played with in his career, even after playing with George Pickens last season and spending time with D.K. Metcalf when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. With the attention of opposing defenses focused on Nabers, the other featured receivers, Wan'Dale Robinson and Darius Slayton, may benefit from the team bringing in Wilson to be the team's starting quarterback. Advertisement If the offensive line can play like it did to start the season last year, coupled with the emergence of running back Tyrone Tracy, the offense could be a balanced, functional unit for the first time in a long time. Did the Commanders have luck on their side in 2024?
Luck was a big factor in the Washington Commanders' 2024 success. Sam Fortier of The Washington Post told John Keim on Keim's podcast why he felt the Commanders were recipients of much luck last year, resulting in their 12-5 season. Advertisement Fortier began by saying he wasn't even including the one-score wins late, nor the low number of injuries suffered in 2024. He explained something regarding what is termed a "Luck Dashboard." Explaining it includes four things: dropped passes by an opponent, dropped interceptions by opponents, a reasonably easy missed kick (field goal/PAT) and when either team recovers a fumble, Fortier told Keim the Commanders were the luckiest team in 2024 since this metric was recorded, beginning in 2022. Commanders fans will recall Malik Nabers' easy drop, which allowed Washington to win the Week 2 game against the New York Giants. Had Nabers made the routine catch, the Giants would have held the ball longer, and the Commanders would have had less opportunity to even their record at 1-1. Starting the year 0-2 was certainly more than possible, and yes, Nabers makes that catch the vast majority of the time. But for some reason, he dropped the pass against the Commanders, providing them an opportunity to score, and they did, defeating the Giants. Fervent Commanders fans will also recall that in the home win over the Eagles, Jalen Hurts, the Philadelphia quarterback, was injured in the first quarter, no doubt helping the Commanders' chances of winning the game (which they did). They will also recall that in the fourth quarter, Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith inexplicably dropped an easy reception, forcing the Eagles to kick a field goal. Had Smith made the easy reception, the Eagles would have maintained possession and chewed up much more of the clock on the Commanders. Advertisement Interestingly, Fortier told Keim that when he asked Commanders head coach Dan Quinn about luck, Quinn affirmed that he did indeed believe in luck. However, when Fortier asked starting center Tyler Biadasz, he responded, "I believe in five," referring to quarterback Jayden Daniels, of course. GM Adam Peters has worked hard to improve the roster, so perhaps this season the Commanders will not need as much luck as they were afforded in 2024. Brian Thomas Jr. Had a Lot to Say About Travis Hunter originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Advertisement After being selected 23rd overall in the 2024 draft, Thomas would end the year with 1282 yards and 10 touchdowns. His rookie performance placed him in the top 3 of Rookie of the Year voting alongside college teammates Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers. This week, Brian Thomas Jr. was asked about getting to know rookie WR/DB Travis Hunter, 'It's been pretty good. Pretty fun. He's a fun dude. Super cool, super chill—I'm not going to say that one (laughs). Super cool, super fun. He's just a fun guy to be around. A lot of energy. Super fun.' Brian said that rookie who player Coach Prime is definitely trying to soak up as much information as possible. 'Yeah, he's been asking a lot of questions. But that's just him trying to be the best he can be. Just talking through routes, talking through little things, plays, why we run these certain plays versus these certain looks. So just little things like that. He wants to be the best. We both want to be the best. We just come out and compete each and every day and whatever he needs help with, I'm glad to help him,' said Thomas Jr. Brian also was questioned about whether it's been very competitive between the two receivers. 'Yeah, for sure. We compete in everything we do. We come out here each and every day, coming out here striving to be the best.' Advertisement Thomas Jr. talked about his first time seeing Hunter out on the field. 'I actually came out here for when they had the rookie minicamp. I was up here, so I came out. I just stepped out here and looked at him doing the drills and stuff. It was really just how quick he was and how detailed he was. When he might've gotten a drill wrong or something, and he was just hopping back in line and going right back at it and trying to find ways to do it right and find ways to be the best that he can be.' Finally, the second-year receiver was asked if he's tired of answering Travis Hunter related questions? He's taking it in stride and understands there is a lot of excitement. He also made it clear he wants to help others the way vets helped him as a rookie. 'No, it would never be like that because guys that were here last year, they helped me out throughout the whole season and they were there for me. So, anything he needs help with, I'll be there for him.' Giants' Nabers Should Be Ready For Training Camp After Sitting Out Spring Practices With Toe Issue
New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers should be available to practice for the start of training camp next month after sitting out during the spring with a toe issue. Coach Brian Daboll said Wednesday that Nabers was doing good and he had no concerns that the injury would affect his availability. 'Every person's at a different part in–call it rehab if you will or prehab,' Daboll said, 'and we just did what we thought was best for Malik to try to get him as healthy as we can.' Daboll said last month during organized team activities that the Giants were simply being cautious with Nabers, who has had an issue with the toe since his college days at LSU. Daboll also said then that Nabers didn't need any procedures on his toe during the offseason. Nabers didn't practice in the sessions open to reporters during OTAs and minicamp but participated in some of the team's walkthrough periods. 'He's had some issues, like I said in the past in college with it,' Daboll said. 'And again, that was the plan that we came up with for him and for our football team.' Nabers, the sixth overall pick in the draft last year, caught an NFL rookie-record 109 passes last season while setting the franchise mark for most receptions in a season. Nabers also tied former Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. for the NFL record for fewest games needed for 100 career catches, reaching the milestone in just 14 games. Left tackle Andrew Thomas also didn't practice throughout the spring while he works his way back from surgery to repair a Lisfranc injury to his right foot that sidelined him the final 11 games. Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence didn't practice in team drills but participated in individual drills during OTAs and minicamp. Third-round defensive tackle Darius Alexander and fourth-round running back Cam Skattebo also didn't practice fully in minicamp because of undisclosed injuries. 'They're progressing,' Daboll said. 'They'll do everything they can do to get ready and hopefully they'll be ready to go.'
