Watchdog clears Dalata's €83m deal for Radisson Dublin Airport
Dalata Hotel Group will give up the lease on the DAA-owned Maldron Hotel at Dublin Airport after the competition watchdog approved its bid to acquire the nearby Radisson Blu hotel from Alan McIntosh's Emerald Investments for €83 million. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) said on Wednesday it had cleared Dalata's bid to buy CG Hotels Dublin Airport, which holds the long leasehold interest in the property. The CCPC said it had approved the €83 million transaction, subject to several conditions, one of which is that Dalata will have to surrender the lease on the nearby Maldron Hotel. Dalata said previously the Maldron lease is due to expire in January 2026. In a statement on Thursday afternoon, Dalata confirmed it had received approval for the acquisition and all conditions are now satisfied, with the transaction set to be completed before the end of the month. Dalata chief executive Dermot Crowley said: 'We are pleased the regulatory approval process is now complete, and I am very excited about the future of the hotel within Dalata Hotel Group. 'I look forward to meeting the team at the hotel in the coming weeks and welcoming them into Dalata.' The transaction was notified to the CCPC last November, and the watchdog launched its investigation into the competition implications of the deal in April. CG Hotels Dublin Airport is a subsidiary of CG Hotels, which is linked to Mr McIntosh, a co-founder of Irish-listed home builder Cairn Homes, and his Emerald Investment Partners firm. The four-star hotel is on 4.4 acres to the east of Dublin Airport, comprising 229 bedrooms as well as meeting and events rooms. Dalata put itself up for sale in March, hiring investment bank Rothschild to carry out a strategic review of the business following a sustained period of underperformance by its stock. Earlier this month, the Dublin-listed group rejected a €1.3 billion bid from a Scandinavian consortium comprising Swedish peer Pandox, which owns hotels run under the Leonardo brand in Ireland, and Oslo-based Eiendomsspar, a leading shareholder in Dalata.

Dalata Hotel Group, Ireland's largest hotel operator, will manage the hotel under its Maldron brand, renowned for delivering high-quality accommodation and a superior guest experience. To date, McAleer & Rushe has delivered more than 3,000 hotel bedrooms for Dalata across Ireland and Great Britain, with this latest development reinforcing their strong partnership and shared commitment to continued growth. Designed to achieve a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating, the hotel will boast environmental features such as green roofs, air source heat pumps and EV charging points, and will feature a traditional hand built red brick façade to complement the surrounding built environment. So far, McAleer & Rushe has diverted 100% of construction waste from landfill, saved 5,308 m³ of soil through reuse on site, and is on track to meet the client's whole life carbon target of 707 kg CO₂e per m².

Woman stole bank card from American tourist visiting Cork and went on pub crawl around city
A Northern Irish woman stole a purse from an American tourist visiting Cork and used her bank card to buy food and drink on a pub crawl through the city prompting the judge to remark 'she almost left a trail of breadcrumbs behind her.' Judge Philip O'Leary sentenced the accused to a total of five months in prison in respect of multiple charges to which she pleaded guilty. 56-year-old Michelle Dillon, of Glenview House, Lisburn Road, Belfast, had some difficulties in her life and travelled to Cork for a break, but ran out of money during her visit. Diarmuid Kelleher, solicitor, said after stealing the purse at Da Mirco restaurant on Bridge Street, Ms Dillon could be tracked by the use of the bank card from there through other premises in Cork City. At that point in the case, Judge Philip O'Leary said 'she almost left a trail of breadcrumbs behind her'. Mr Kelleher accepted the theft of the purse belonging to the American visitor was not a nice experience for this woman. The solicitor said: 'Through very good police work, she was met at Cork Simon Community. She was so drunk the interview had to be postponed until the following morning. She pleading guilty to all these matters at the earliest opportunity. 'She has a lot of difficulties, including a very bad alcohol problem. She is from North of Ireland and decided to visit Cork because her late father from Wexford used to bring them to Cork as children. It was a trip down memory lane. 'But she ran out of money, she took the items and effectively went on a pub crawl of the local vicinity.' Sergeant Gearóid Davis said the offending commenced on Bridge Street and continued at a number of venues in the city, where food and drink was paid for with the stolen card. The locations for the thefts in this manner included Da Mirco restaurant, Maldron Hotel, The Poor Relation on Parnell Place and El Fenix on Union Quay. Mr Kelleher said: 'When she was sober, she woke up to what she had done. She had a traumatic life herself and has medical difficulties. She has been out of trouble since 2009 but had this lapse. When she was caught, she ensured the tourist got her belongings back.'

Dalata Hotel Group launches strategic review, including possible sale
DUBLIN, March 6 (Reuters) - Ireland's largest hotel group Dalata (DHG.I), opens new tab has launched a strategic review to explore options to enhance shareholder value, including but not limited to a potential sale of the group, it said on Thursday. Dalata operates 55 hotels under the Maldron Hotel and Clayton Hotel brands, with most located in Ireland and the United Kingdom. Its European portfolio includes Clayton Hotel Duesseldorf and Clayton Hotel Amsterdam American. The company said it had appointed Rothschild & Co as financial adviser in connection with the strategic review, adding that it is not in discussions with, or in receipt of an approach from any potential suitor. Dalata's 30 owned hotels have been valued externally at 1.7 billion euros ($1.84 billion) including assets under construction, it said, 73% of which relates to hotels in Dublin and London. It has 22 leased hotels, the majority of which are on long-term institutional lease agreements with a weighted average lease length of 29 years, and also operates three managed hotels. Dalata earlier reported full-year adjusted core profit up 5.1% at 234.5 million euros on revenue up 7.3% at 652.2 million euros, supported by additions to its portfolio over the past two years.
