Websites expand ancestry records of enslaved people

Two genealogy sites are adding troves of historical materials about enslaved people in the U.S. to databases, which could give many of their descendants a fuller picture of their families' histories. The moves come as the nation on Thursday celebrates Juneteenth, the annual celebration of the end of slavery. Why it matters: In recent years, descendants of enslaved people have gained unprecedented access to collections of long-lost family records online — made possible by advances in technology, AI, and DNA testing. The big picture: A growing number of Black Americans are tracing how their families were torn apart, received Anglo names and sold across the country because of slavery, which began in the British colonies more than 400 years ago and officially ended with the 13th Amendment in 1865. They're also learning about how some relatives escaped slavery and what their lives were like in the aftermath of emancipation. Driving the news: announced last week that it will significantly expand its free Articles of Enslavement records collection — an archive of newspaper articles documenting the experiences of enslaved people in the U.S. The website is expanding its archive nearly fourfold, using proprietary AI models and machine learning to index 110,000 newly discovered articles that reference more than half a million people. Many of the original newspaper articles contain never-before-seen information about enslaved people in communities where courthouse and community records were otherwise destroyed or lost. How it works: Users can visit Ancestry's expanded landing page dedicated to enslavement records and search by name or explore a state with the most records. AI will comb through the once-hard-to-search data for names of enslaved people, connecting names in Ancestry's other databases of public documents to piece together puzzles. Zoom in: Michigan State University announced this week it's publishing new data on its "Enslaved: Peoples of the Historical Slave Trade" website, That's a project in partnership with other organizations, such as FamilySearch International, that documents the lives of enslaved people of African descent. The latest data release makes information regarding 2 million Black Americans born before emancipation in the 1900 Census available for discovery and download. The expanded dataset will significantly aid researchers' ability to identify formerly enslaved people and their families for academic study, the university said. What they're saying: "Tracing people from the era of enslavement into the generations that followed emancipation presents exceptional challenges to descendants and researchers," Walter Hawthorne, an MSU history professor and head of the project, said in a statement. That's because managing databases across multiple sites remains challenging, along with ensuring the long-term preservation of projects and resources, MSU said. "The details of these records can lead to key breakthroughs in helping descendants of previously enslaved people in the U.S. make discoveries about their families prior to 1870," Nicka Sewell-Smith, Ancestry's senior story producer and genealogist, said in an announcement. State of play: Juneteenth celebrations began in Texas, and commemorate June 19, 1865 — the day Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, with news that the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed by President Lincoln more than two years earlier.

MSU target, local 3-star speedster WR Samson Gash reportedly nearing decision

MSU target, local 3-star speedster WR Samson Gash reportedly nearing decision This past weekend, #MichiganState hosted Catholic Central (MI) WR Samson Gash. He just talked to me about this past weekend's visit to MSU, sharing some very strong praise. Gash: 'We should see a decision in the next day or so." MORE: — Justin Thind (@JustinThind) June 17, 2025 One of the top remaining targets on the Spartans' recruiting board is nearing a decision, according to a report from Michigan State insider Justin Thind. Thind caught up with the three-star wide receiver Samson Gash following his official visit to Michigan State this past weekend. Per a post on X from Thind, Gash had "some very strong praise" following his visit and that "we should see a decision in the next day or so." Gash -- who plays for Detroit Catholic Central -- is the highest-rated wide receiver prospect from Michigan in the 2026 class, and holds a recruiting rating of 89 on 247Sports. He ranks as the No. 49 wide receiver nationally and No. 4 overall prospect from the state of Michigan. Gash also visited West Virginia earlier this month and is slated to visit Cincinnati later this week, according to 247Sports. Those appear to be the three finalists at the moment for Gash's commitment, but he also does hold notable offers from Illinois, Iowa, Purdue, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest as well. Michigan State already has one wide receiver commitment in its 2026 class in three-star Zachary Washington. He committed to Michigan State earlier this week, and would pair nicely with Gash should the Spartans come out on top in this recruiting battle. The five best transfers in Michigan State football history

The five best transfers in Michigan State football history The transfer portal has become synonymous with college sports these days, with schools starting to look at the portal like free agency, almost. It's become imperative to be able to find high-level talent in the portal. Michigan State football hasn't had a ton of high-profile transfers, but the ones who have hit, have hit well. We put together our list of the top five transfers in school history below, and interestingly, three of them, and both honorable mentions, transferred to MSU before the quote-unquote transfer portal era truly began. Honorable Mentions Keith Nichol Keith Nichol might not have put up the biggest numbers in the world, but the former Oklahoma quarterback recruit was responsible for some of the biggest plays in MSU history and earns a mention on this list. DeAndra' Cobb DeAndra' Cobb made the All-American team for his spectacular kick return skills, of which he returned four kickoffs for touchdowns in his career, one shy of the Big Ten record. He still holds the MSU record for three kickoff returns for touchdowns in one season. 5. Jonathan Kim You probably didn't think you'd see a special teams player on this, huh? Well, Jonathan Kim won't be the last, but he is the first we'll talk about. Jonathan Kim was a major success story for Michigan State. Coming in and setting a school record and making the All-Big Ten team was very impressive for a kicker who was largely resigned to kickoffs at North Carolina, and he earned himself this spot. 4. Domata Peko Domata Peko was playing NFL football as recently as 2020. That's pretty insane considering he was a John L. Smith recruit, transferring in from the College of the Canyons. Peko was a beloved Spartan and sneakily one of the better MSU alumni in the NFL in recent history. 3. Bryce Baringer Now, we get to the second special teams player on our list, and it's a doozy. Bryce Baringer isn't just a good punter, he is the best punter in school history, which is saying something, because MSU has had some great ones over the years. I almost forgot that he started his career at Illinois, but thankfully, he made his way up to East Lansing, and the rest is history. 2. Jayden Reed Before Jayden Reed became one of the most exciting players in the NFL, he started his career, believe it or not, at Western Michigan. His transfer to MSU was one of the last great acts from legendary MSU coach Mark Dantonio. Reed made two All-Big Ten teams before heading to the next level. 1. Kenneth Walker III Was there ever a doubt who was number one on this list? Kenneth Walker III isn't just the best transfer in MSU history, he is one of the best transfers in modern NCAA football history. Disgruntled Michigan State fans will still tell you that the man they called K9 should have been the Heisman Trophy winner that year, and if he wasn't banged up by the time the Spartans played Ohio State, who knows what could have happened that year. It's one of the great what-ifs in MSU history. Contact/Follow us @The SpartansWire on X, and like our page on Facebook to follow ongoing coverage of Michigan state news, notes, and opinion.
