Subway plan for Ariyamangalam moves forward after land survey

Trichy: In a positive development for residents of Ariyamangalam, Trichy, a land survey to assess the area required for a proposed subway at Ukkadai was completed on Thursday. The subway aims to provide a safe passage across the railway tracks for pedestrians, two-wheelers, and autorickshaws. The move follows a request by Trichy MP Durai Vaiko to the Trichy railway division, urging the construction of a subway instead of the planned retaining walls along the railway line between Srirangam and Ponmalai stations. Residents and the MP had earlier met divisional railway manager M S Anbalagan to halt the wall construction, which they said would block access and force locals to take a 1.5 km detour. To advance the long-pending proposal — first raised 15 years ago — the MP formed a coordination team including two retired railway officials. With support from Trichy Corporation Zone III chairperson M Mathivanan, the team brought in a surveyor to assess the land. The survey identified the extent of railway and state-owned land, along with areas of encroachment. "There are some encroachments that need to be cleared for the subway. The land details will be shared with the railway division to proceed with the design," a source involved in the survey said. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) observed on Thursday to raise awareness on the importance of safety at railway level crossings, M S Anbalagan, divisional railway Manager (DRM) informed that the division maintains 493 level crossing gates. He stated that reckless behaviour by road users not only damages railway property but hampers train's punctuality and endangers human lives. To mitigate such risks, cautionary and statutory signboards were installed to advise road users to strictly adhere to safety norms while crossing the railway tracks. The DRM underlined the ongoing efforts to enhance safety through the rationalization of level crossings by constructing limited use subways (LUS), road under bridges (RUBs), and road over bridges (ROBs) in collaboration with the state govt. Anbalagan and other senior officers flagged off a mass awareness rally and the safety publicity mobile vehicle in front of Trichy Junction railway station. The rally proceeded through Central bus terminus. The team distributed safety pamphlets and educated the public on level crossing safety. Later, a vehicle bearing safety awareness banners, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) visited level crossing gates near Trichy Town, Srirangam, and Thiruverumbur railway stations.
