Collector asks quarry, crusher units to apply for transit pass to transport M-sand, gravel
Collector M.S. Sangeetha on Wednesday informed quarry and crusher unit owners to procure permission from the Collector for storage and transportation of M-sand and gravel. As per the Tamil Nadu Prevention of Illegal Mining Transportation and Storage of Minerals and Mineral Dealers Rules, 2011, quarry and crusher units required appropriate permission from the district administration for storing M-sand and gravel and also for selling them in market. Further, as the transit pass system for transporting M-sand and gravel comes into effect from June 14, quarry and crusher units have been instructed to furnish the required details on . Following the registration, a free transit pass would be issued which could be used for transporting M-sand and gravel materials. For further details, applicants can contact the Department of Geology and Mining office on the Collectorate premises.

Distribution of cloth bags, planting of saplings mark World Environment Day
The district administration along with Dhan Foundation on Thursday distributed 5,000 saplings to the public and students to mark World Environment Day. Collector M.S. Sangeetha also distributed cloth bags (manjappai) to the public. In order to encourage usage of cloth bags and to reiterate the importance of achieving a plastic-free world, cloth bags were given as an alternative to polythene covers and plastic bags, the organisers said. Further, the participants were encouraged to utilise the cloth bags while buying groceries at shops or food at eateries. 'People should be aware of of proper disposal of plastic materials and e-waste generated in every household,' they added. As usage of plastic and electronic products had become an indispensable need, the importance of healthy disposal practice should be learnt for safeguarding future generations. Similarly, under the Climate Change Mission, a district-level workshop on climate was organised at Al-Ameen Higher Secondary School at Activities such as planting trees and distribution of pamphlets and books, among others, were carried out as part of the workshop. Uchapatti Panchayat Union Middle School, which has undertaken planting saplings as a mission of their school for many years, celebrated the day by writing, painting and sketching about the importance of protecting nature. N. Shanthi, headmistress, said the mission to plant trees in the school was continuing for more than five years. While the school had won several awards for maintaining a green ecosystem, students on a daily basis were taught about the ill-effects of plastic usage and carry bags. 'Our school campus is free of plastic waste and e-waste, and we strive to better this by avoiding usage of plastic materials,' she added. Reuse of plastics as a practical exercise was taught to students. A School Education Department official said the schools in the district had been instructed to upload the activities conducted on World Environment Day from June 5 to June 12 on the eco club portal. The geotagged photos of the activities and green environment of the school should be uploaded on the portal for consideration for the green award.

Guidance to students on financial aid at grievance redressal meet held in Madurai
A special grievance redressal camp for students was conducted under the Naan Mudhalvan – Kalloori Kanavu scheme at the District Collector office here on Thursday. The camp aimed to support students with financial aid, academic guidance, and admission-related queries for their higher education. During the meeting, students seeking financial support were assessed for eligibility under available government aid and scholarships. Students who were deemed ineligible for such options were guided to apply for bank loans through portal. Collector M.S. Sangeetha also instructed the bank officials present at the camp to collect academic and contact details for follow-up. Counselling was offered to students preparing for supplementary examinations. Ms. Sangeetha advised students not to lose hope and motivated them to work hard and succeed in the upcoming exams. Students were asked to contact the helpdesk at 0452-2522995 or reach out via call or WhatsApp at 72006 47475 for immediate resolution of higher education-related queries. As a dedicated higher education guidance control room had been established at the education department office at Tallakulam, students seeking in-person guidance were told to visit the office. The guidance control room would operate from June 5 to October 31 on all working days between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Additionally, assistance was provided to students regarding college admissions. Officials from the Government Industrial Training Institute offered guidance tailored to the individual interests. Interestingly, a 35-year-old woman aspiring to join a beautician course received support from officials of the Government ITI (Women). The Government ITI (Women), Madurai, announced the commencement of admissions for the 2025 academic year and there would be no training fee for the courses and no age limit for applying to the courses. Some of the perks of securing admission in the ITI would be that the selected candidates would be provided with free accommodation and meals, a cumulative stipend of ₹1,750, free uniforms, bicycles, textbooks, and bus travel, along with course completion certificates. As immediate employment opportunities were assured upon course completion, candidates were urged to submit their applications through or in person at the institute, the officials added. The eligibility for applying was completion of class VII or X and candidates could opt for a variety of courses such as electronics, mechanics, medical electronics technician, computer operator and programming assistant, desk-top publishing operator, sewing technology and cosmetology.

Farmers seek water release
The need to desilt and deepen waterbodies, release water for the double crop region and tackle pest infestation was stressed at the farmers grievance redress meeting held at the Collectorate on Friday. At the meeting presided over by Madurai Collector M.S. Sangeetha, the farmers said that water from Mullaperiyar dam should be released for irrigating the first crop of the double crop region. The farmers urged the authorities to desilt and deepen the waterbodies for storage of more water. They also complained about encroachments on the waterbodies. They urged the authorities to remove encroachments and the need to conduct a survey to ascertain the extent of the waterbodies to remove the encroachments. The Collector told the Water Resources Department officials to take up the survey to ascertain the extent of the waterbodies in the district. The farmers also sought the removal of Prosopis juliflora (seemai karuvelam) trees from waterbodies. The Collector instructed the authorities to look into the issue and also initiate necessary steps to auction them. The farmers complained about pest infestation and diseases affecting the crops. They sought appropriate compensation for crop loss. The Collector instructed the officials to look into the issue.

Chithirai festival begins with holy flag-hoisting at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple
The annual Chithirai festival commenced with the holy flag-hoisting at Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple here on Tuesday. Priests performed special pujas and deeparadhan for the deities. Musical instruments were played at the temple bedecked with colourful lights. The lights and colourful paintings at the temple transformed the entire shrine into the festival mode. Collector M.S. Sangeetha, Mayor V. Indrani Ponvasanth, Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan, Commissioner of Police J. Loganathan, temple Fit Person Rukmini Palanivel Rajan and devotees were present at the event. Security was beefed up as police officers checked the bag storage area and mobile phone lockers. Mobile phones were not allowed inside the temple complex following the ruling by Madurai Bench of Madras High Court after a fire at the temple's eastern wing. The procession of deities on Chithirai Streets took place in the evening. The temple administration began booking tickets for the celestial wedding both online and at Birla Vishram near the temple. As photographers and videographers were not allowed for the coverage of the flag-hoisting event, a senior temple official said that to avoid disturbance to VIPs and top officials, the media persons were denied entry for the event.
