Lost In Starlight Will Rip Out Your Heart But It's Good
Lost In Starlight is for the hyper-independent person in your life, that's thrown any idea of letting somebody love them in the trash. It's a movie to 'ugly cry' to, to let your guard down for and to watch on your own — unless you want to share tear-soaked snacks with someone. Set in 2050s Seoul, the animated feature follows hopeful astronaut, Nan-Young (voiced by Kim Tae-ri) and Jay (Hong Kyung) a shy musician, through a new romance, lingering grief and the heartbreaking choice between your soulmate and your lifelong dream. It has the air of a 2000s romcom, paired with beautifully animated futuristic settings that bring the emotion to a whole new level. Other reviews are already comparing it to the wildly popular anime movie, Your Name (AKA Kimi No Na Wa) based on its visual beauty and how it tugs at the heart strings. It's a tearjerker from the start, where we're ~so kindly~ treated to a Christmas time tragedy — the death of Nan-young's astronaut mum on Mars. The unprocessed grief has built high walls around her heart, but also sparked her unwavering ambition to follow in her mother's footsteps. The experience, even in animated terms, is so innately human. How many times do we pour ourselves into our work, into our friendships and into our goals, at hyperspeed, thinking that along the way the grief will find its way out? Unfortunately, it always finds a way to catch up, even when you're an astronaut trying to get to Mars. Jay unexpectedly walks into her life to show her that there's space for more than her career. Their relationship is a reminder that you can't choose when someone gets to love and support you — you just have to make way for it when it arrives, even when you feel undeserving. Nan-young's impact on his life is easily summed up with this quote: "Somewhere in the someone who's forever and you on". Her belief in Jay gives him the strength to find his voice, so he too can fulfil his destiny. If you love a 'he fell first, she fell harder' trope, this film teeters on the edge of it, with a heavy handed sprinkle of 'time limited romance'. While its backdrops are set in the near (but distant) future, the themes of loss, change and love throughout the film feel more timeless. Emotional impact is shown through plays on light and shadow, as well as colour palette. It also makes a great case for the longevity of long-distance relationships in the future. If Nan-young and Jay can risk national security by FaceTiming with holograms from the Space Station to Seoul, then whoever you're waiting on a DM from can 100% text back. Though the lessons are weaved in with more of gentle touch, every loose end comes to a head in the last 30 minutes of the movie, which will likely leave you red-eyed, snotty-nosed and reaching for tissues. Apologies in advance. It's a balancing act between the darkness of grief and the lightheartedness of romance. I only wish there was more about Nan-young's experience with love and dealing with loss growing up to really cement how much she's grown. Lost In Starlight packs the emotion of a 20-episode K-Drama into 96 minutes of visual goodness with a soundtrack that makes you want to text someone you shouldn't. Watch it now on Netflix. Which movies wreck but also heal your soul?

Kim Da-mi is Yoon E-na, a kooky crime profiler on the trail of a serial killer who leaves behind puzzle pieces at the crime scenes. Joining her in the cat-and-mouse game is Son Suk-ku's cynical detective Kim Han-saem. They may butt heads, but both are determined to catch the potential mastermind behind a decade-old cold murder case. If bingeing on Nine Puzzles is not enough, viewers can try their hand at solving crimes inspired by the series at the Nine Puzzles: Decoded interactive escape room experience. Find hidden clues and crack codes, and receive a personalised keepsake at the end of the nine challenges. The Nine Puzzles: Decoded pop-up is at Plaza Singapura (B2-17/18) until June 10. Entry is free, from 3 to 9pm on weekdays and 11am to 10pm on weekends. Our Unwritten Seoul Netflix With only four episodes in since its debut on May 24, Our Unwritten Seoul has already claimed the third spot on Netflix's global top 10 non-English shows chart. In the coming-of-age K-drama, South Korean actress Park Bo-young plays identical twins Yu Mi-ji and Yu Mi-jae, who happen to be polar opposites. Portraying two unique characters is already a challenge. Yet, the premise sees the sisters swopping identities, so Park is technically tasked to bring four distinctive personas to life. Elder twin Mi-jae works in a government agency in Seoul. Eager to please and always striving to be the best, the submissive woman falls from grace after a workplace incident and becomes a victim of office bullying. Meanwhile, bubbly and assertive Mi-ji lives in the countryside with their single mother and ailing grandmother. The over-achieving Mi-jae is favoured over the aimless Mi-ji, but the younger twin is the quiet pillar of strength in the family. Our Unwritten Seoul also stars K-idol Jinyoung from boy band Got7 as the twins' neighbour and Mi-ji's love interest. The 12-episode series about finding oneself is a slow-burner, and it works purely because of Park's versatile performance. Their relationship is put to the test when Nan-young gets accepted into a space programme that will take her to Mars. Can the star-crossed lovers make it through space and time, and achieve their dreams? These are some questions raised by South Korean film-maker Han Ji-won in this animated film. Oscar-winning South Korean director Bong Joon-ho praised Lost In Starlight as 'a visual masterpiece that takes you around the universe' in a statement accompanying the film's global release on May 30. Lost In Starlight is Netflix's first South Korean animation, and features the voices of award-winning actress Kim Tae-ri as Nan-young and actor Hong Kyung as Jay. Netflix adds movie Parasite director describes as a 'visual masterpiece'
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. When the legend that is Parasite director Bong Joon-ho showers a film with praise, you know you're in for something truly special. To use his own words about Netflix's first-ever Korean animation, 'This visual masterpiece will take you around the universe,' and his verdict has sent excitement sky high for director Han Ji-won's vision of the future. And the wait for Lost In Starlight is over as Netflix has added it today [Friday, May 30] globally. While anime fans have known for a while that the film was on its way, Netflix ramped up expectations by keeping any images close to their chest. But that all changed a few weeks ago with the arrival of a teaser poster, followed swiftly by a trailer that shows not only the extent of the fantastical visual storytelling we can expect from the film, but the importance of music to the story. There's a sense of nostalgia in the poster, with a record player and vinyl albums pointing towards a unique cyberpunk universe, while the trailer itself gives a first taste of the film's evocative soundtrack. In Han Ji-won's feature debut, the setting is Seoul in 2050 and it's a romantic tale of aspiring astronaut Nan-young, who dreams of making it to Mars, and reluctant musician Jay. In a story of love, ambition and separation, the couple meet when Nan-young visits an audio equipment repair store in the hope they can repair an old record player left behind by her mother. It's there that she runs into Jay and a romance slowly blossoms. But they have to prepare for the prospect of being millions of miles apart as Nan-young goes deeper into her Mars research and gets the chance to go to the red planet. She's also encouraged Jay to re-discover his love of music but, with separation looming, they have no idea how it will affect their dreams of being together. Best movies on Netflix The use of light in the visuals will rock you in your seat. The impact is extraordinary, a combination of delicacy and literal brilliance, with cities drenched in sunlight and voyages to the stars wrapped in velvet darkness. Down-to-earth scenes of Seoul are beautifully re-created through Han Ji-won's stunningly evocative drawings, capturing the pulsating thrill and uncertainty of new love. There's also the sense that, at the heart of the film, is a mystery which seems to echo Interstellar, while the constant dangers of deep space start to get in the way of Nan-young returning to Earth to be with her lover. In the Korean language version, Nan-young is voiced by Kim Tae-ri, while Hong Kyung is the voice of Jay. For the English language dub, Justin H Min (The Umbrella Academy, After Yang) is Jay, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever, Turning Red) plays Nan-Young. Early reactions to Lost in Starlight beg an immediate question. Could it become the feature film equivalent of Netflix's record-breaking South Korean phenomenon, Squid Game? It may not reach the same dizzy audience numbers, but it might easily provide the perfect antidote to the streamer's number one non-English language series of all time. As Netflix's most successful launch ever, Squid Game attracted 265,200,000 views for its opening episode in 2021, and the clock is ticking as it moves into its third and final series on June 27. Picking up straight after the brutal cliffhanger at the end of season two, a failed rebellion, the death of a friend, and a secret betrayal are all on the cards. Fans of Korean animation and drama — or both — will be in their element. Lost In Starlight was added globally on Netflix on Friday, May 30. Seasons one and two of Squid Game are currently on Netflix in the US and UK. Season three arrives on June 27.

New Netflix Animated Sci-Fi Romance ‘Lost In Starlight' Sparkles Visually And Emotionally
Promotional image from Lost in Starlight, an animated romance/sci-fi film debuting on Netflix May ... More 30, 2025 The term 'star-crossed lovers' has become a bit of a cliché, but it applies literally to Nan-young and Jay, the two protagonists of Lost in Starlight, the beautiful new animated feature from director Han Ji-Wan dropping on Netflix May 30. The film, which is the first feature length animated production on Netflix from South Korea, comes dressed in the trappings of science fiction, complete with planetary exploration and an edgy near-future version of Seoul glittering in the background. Underneath, however, it's a warm-hearted love story that pushes the boundaries of animation in exciting new directions. 'Usually in animated films, the characters just exist to drive the plot,' said Han in an exclusive interview via an interpreter. 'I didn't want that. I really wanted to have characters that you would see in everyday life, who you could really relate to. With animation, you can control all the details of expression and movement, so you can actually get more personal, more character-specific, and really dive into the feeling of it.' Lost in Starlight delivers on that vision. Like Entergallactic, Scott 'Kid Cudi' Mescudi and Kenya Barris's animated romance film that debuted on Netflix in 2022, Lost in Starlight uses the irresistible eye candy of high-end contemporary animation to illuminate appealing characters and dazzling backgrounds, but never loses sight of the emotional heart of its story. In Lost in Starlight, Nan-young is a scientist attached to the space program. The leadership is initially reluctant to add her to an upcoming journey to Mars because her mother was lost there on a previous mission 20 years ago. As Nan-young fights to realize her dream, she meets Jay, a gifted musician whose stage fright has kept his career from taking flight. But when Nan-young is added to the Mars mission at the last minute, and finds herself on a dangerous mission on the Red Planet, they must deal with the anxieties and uncertainties of being worlds apart. Han brings a warmth and empathy to her characters and realizes the visuals in a style that combines the best of Asian and American-style animation while avoiding stylistic and genre clichés. She says the settings in 2050s-era Seoul are modeled on the neighborhood where she lives and works, and every detail in the background is meant to spark emotional or nostalgic resonance. It's a remarkably self-assured film from such a relatively young director, and a bold choice for Netflix's debut entry from the South Korean animation industry. Animator Han Ji-Won, director of "Lost in Starlight" debuting on Netflix May 30, 2025 Han is a rising star in the South Korean animation industry with a growing catalog of short films including The Sea on the Day When the Magic Returns, which was screened at Sundance in 2023. She says she fell in love with comics as a child at a comic shop run by her grandmother, and knew she wanted to be an animator after seeing the work of Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki. Lost in Starlight, her second feature film, is getting an international release on Netflix, part of the streamer's ongoing investment in cutting edge animation and new voices. 'At Netflix, we collaborate with creators from diverse backgrounds to offer a variety of stories,' says Vincent Taewon Kim, Director of Content for Netflix Korea. 'Lost in Starlight, especially with the incredible vision of Director Han Ji-won, is a perfect example of that. We're also proud to support new and emerging creative voices. This year, we are showcasing two other films such as Mantis by Lee Tae-sung and Love Untangled by Namkoong Sun, both amazing up-and-coming filmmakers.' Han says she came up with the story idea of a woman's dream to be an astronaut as part of a short music video she was working on, which she then had the opportunity to expand into a full length film. 'At the time I was making the movie, I fell in love,' she says. 'The production company asked me if we could add more romance to the movie, and I thought this was actually perfect because right now I' m love, so this would be the ideal opportunity to show my emotions!' She also says she is grateful she had the support to realize her vision in an industry and culture that does not always welcome women in creative leadership. 'I'm lucky because it is quite rare to be in the role and position I'm in, to do both the production and planning myself,' she says. 'It's true that it is a very male dominated field, especially at the director and senior levels, and there is an unseen barrier to some extent, so I try my best to make sure my communication is very clear cut and I am able to get my ideas across. My way of breaking the barrier was having a unique way of working and being very persuasive as I advanced my career.' She added she's encouraged to see the industry opening up, with more opportunities for talented female creators. If Lost in Starlight meets with popular success to match its creative accomplishments, those barriers may drop down even further.
