'Productive' Thembinkosi Lorch earns praise despite loss to Manchester City
Manchester City defender Vitor Reis tries to get the ball off Wydad Casablanca's South African forward Thembinkosi Lorch during the FIFA Club World Cup Group G match. Image: FRANCK FIFE / AFP Former Orlando Pirates forward Thembinkosi Lorch has been lauded for his industrious performance for Wydad Athletic Club in their FIFA Club World Cup match against Premier League giants Manchester City. Phil Foden scored inside two minutes and wing Jeremy Doku was also on target as Manchester City cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win in their opening match. But it was South African Lorch who ended up being the talk of the town. The clash against City was always going to be a big ask for Wydad, whose coach Amine Benhachem was only appointed in the run-up to the Club World Cup after replacing former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Rhulani Mokwena. When new Man City signing Rayan Cherki gave the ball away cheaply, Lorch produced an audacious attempt to beat Ederson from inside his own half. However, the Brazilian goalkeeper made the save. Lorch set up fellow South African Cassius Mailula after some skilful play, but the former Sundowns man squandered the opportunity. After the match, former Bafana Bafana stars and SuperSport pundits Shaun Bartlett and Bongani Khumalo praised Lorch's performance against such formidable opponents. "He had quite a productive day on the field. I was quite disappointed when they took him off, obviously managing him as a player," Bartlett said during SuperSport TV's live broadcast.

Photo: Instagram/@WACofficiel Image: Instagram/@WACofficiel The Fifa Club World Cup features the top football clubs from each continent. And with Mamelodi Sundowns proudly flying the South African flag in the United States in their second-ever appearance at the competition, the nation also enjoys strong individual representation elsewhere on the global stage. Esperance de Tunis are still reeling from their CAF Champions League semi-final exit, having fallen just short of a second consecutive final after losing narrowly to Sundowns 1-0 over two legs. Their campaign at the World Cup got off to a tough start as well, as they suffered a 2-0 defeat to Brazilian heavyweights Flamengo. South Africa's Elias Mokwana was named on the bench for the Tunisian side, and after Flamengo struck in the 17th minute, Esperance were on the back foot, chasing the game against a formidable team that included Italian midfielder Jorginho, formerly of Chelsea and Arsenal. Mokwana came on early in the second half, and with his side showing some bright moments following tactical tweaks by head coach Maher Kanzari, they now face the challenge of making up points in their upcoming clashes against Los Angeles FC (Saturday) and Chelsea FC (next Wednesday). Next Stay Close ✕ Meanwhile, things are looking different for neighbouring Wydad Athletic Club, who are preparing to open their campaign on Wednesday (6pm SA time) against Pep Guardiola's Manchester City – a side eager to restore pride following a disappointing domestic season. Champions of the 2023/24 Club World Cup, City remain packed with world-class talent, and are no strangers to lifting silverware. But a third-place league finish, 13 points behind title winners Liverpool, was a significant let-down for their fan-base. With Guardiola integrating a number of younger players into the squad, there may still be a lot of vulnerabilities within their set-up – something Wydad will look to exploit, especially given City's lack of recent confidence and form. The Moroccan club themselves ended their Botola Pro League campaign in third place, marking an improvement from their sixth-place showing in the 2024/25 season, which had seen them miss out on CAF Champions League qualification altogether. South Africa's Cassius Mailula has played a pivotal role for Wydad, particularly under the tenure of former coach Rulani Mokwena, and is expected to be a key player once more as they take on Manchester City in their opener. Mailula's contribution this season has been impressive, featuring in 27 matches, scoring five goals, and providing seven assists. His sharp form could be crucial against one of the world's most talented squads, led by arguably the best coach in world football. Another South African, Thembinkosi Lorch, also represents Wydad.

A reflection of GBV within the sporting landscape
Where is the accountability? Former Orlando Pirates attacker Thembinkosi Lorch was found guilty of assaulting his ex-girlfriend two years ago. Picture: Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix Image: Samuel Shivambu/BackpagePix Get your news on the go, click here to join the IOL News WhatsApp channel. After he served his two-week suspension, he resumed his career and earned a big-money move to Mamelodi Sundowns, where he won the league title during the 2023/24 season. He then moved to Wydad Casablanca. Currently, he's preparing to represent the Moroccan giants at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States, which kicked off in Miami this Sunday morning. It seems that Lorch is off the hook, and his assault on his then-girlfriend has now been forgotten. Other footballers have been accused in the past, but charges were either not opened or their cases never made it to court. In a country where 33.1% of women aged 18 and older have endured physical violence in their lifetime, according to a report by the Human Sciences Research Council, sweeping Lorch's past transgressions under the rug paints a picture that the scourge of GBVF is not important. The Human Sciences Research Council report revealed that 33.1% of women aged 18 and older – amounting to over 7.8 million women – have endured physical violence in their lifetime. A fresh incident in everyone's mind is that of Manchester United player, Mason Greenwood. The forward was accused of raping and assaulting a woman. Image: Muzi Ntombela/BackpagePix Dr Zubeda Dangor, of The Nisaa Institute for Women's Development, says it's important for clubs to publicly condemn gender-based violence and femicide and make it clear that such behaviour is not tolerated. Dangor feels that while there has been progress in condemning GBVF in sport, more could be done to promote gender equality and prevent GBVF. She urged clubs to develop clear policies, provide education, and collaborate with experts. 'Sports clubs and organisations should collaborate with experts, including GBVF specialists, law enforcement, and healthcare providers, to ensure effective response and support for survivors.' The three biggest clubs in South Africa were approached for comment, and to find out what measures were in place to combat GBV in South Africa. Only Kaizer Chiefs replied and said they would need until the end of the month to respond to IOL. What Dangor would love to see is clubs using their platforms to raise awareness and shift public attitudes towards GBV. She said social media campaigns can be used to share educational content, personal stories, and resources related to GBVF. 'By leveraging their platforms, sports clubs can play a significant role in raising awareness, shifting public attitudes, challenging myths, and supporting existing GBVF services,' she said. IOL
