Wrexham plot transfer for captain who showed his true colours in clash with manager

Wrexham plot transfer for captain who showed his true colours in clash with manager Wrexham have been linked with a move for the captain of one of their Championship rivals, who has just one year remaining on his contract and is yet to agree an extension Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's Wrexham are reported to be interested in signing Lewis Travis (Image: Robbie Jay Barratt - AMA/Getty Images ) Wrexham are rumoured to be considering a substantial offer for the skipper of one of their Championship competitors. The Red Dragons are reportedly among several clubs showing interest in Blackburn Rovers' Lewis Travis. The midfielder's contract at Ewood Park is set to expire in a year, and there have been no discussions about renewing his terms. ‌ Following their promotion from League One in April, Wrexham have now shown interest in acquiring his services, according to the Lancashire Telegraph. It's suggested that the 27-year-old could cost the Welsh club, co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, around £2million. ‌ The sum matches the record fee they paid to bring striker Sam Smith from Reading in January. Travis is believed to be one of Rovers' highest earners, but Wrexham are reportedly prepared to offer him an even more lucrative salary. Securing the Liverpool academy graduate would be a significant show of ambition from Reynolds and McElhenney, who have made their Premier League aspirations clear. The tenacious midfielder has clocked up over 260 appearances for Blackburn since signing his first professional contract with the club in January 2017. Despite some challenges, Travis has largely been a consistent presence in the team. One of the most difficult times for Travis at Rovers was after Jon Dahl Tomasson took over as head coach in June 2022. Initially, their relationship was positive, with Tomasson giving Travis the captain's armband soon after his appointment. However, as the 2023/24 season unfolded, Travis found game time hard to come by, leading to a loan move to Ipswich Town in January 2024. ‌ Tomasson, the former Newcastle and AC Milan forward, suggested that Travis's desire to play in a different position was the catalyst for the loan. But Travis contested this explanation, labelling the Danish coach's remarks as "unfair" and showing a willingness to defend his stance. Speaking to BBC Radio Lancashire, he said: "I found it very unfair how himself and (former director of football) Gregg Broughton came out and said I wanted to leave because I wasn't playing in the right position. I think it was a bit tough and hard to hear for him to come out and say that without me being allowed to say anything." Travis played a role in Ipswich Town's rise to the Premier League in 2024, marking their first promotion to the top flight in 22 years. Following the achievement, he returned to Blackburn that summer, following Tomasson's departure from the club by mutual agreement and subsequent appointment as the Swedish national team manager. Since his return, Travis has reasserted his importance within the Rovers' midfield, featuring in 38 matches during their latest Championship season. Besides Wrexham, Sheffield United are also rumoured to be monitoring Travis' situation, having previously shown interest in acquiring him last summer.

'Disrespected' - Blackburn Rovers star's message to critics after play-off miss

Blackburn Rovers captain, Lewis Travis. (Image: CameraSport - Alex Dodd) Lewis Travis admitted Blackburn Rovers' players were left 'gutted' after falling just short of the Championship play-offs. The Rovers skipper converted an upset dressing room after the team finished seventh, two points outside the top-six. Had they won at Bramall Lane, they would have usurped Bristol City and set up a two-leg tie with Sheffield United. Ultimately, Rovers fell short but not for a lack of trying. An honest and reflective Travis admitted it was the run of four wins in 21 that cost them. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement "To be honest, everyone is gutted and really upset," he told RoversTV. Everyone can hold their heads up high, they left everything on the pitch. "We have been in good form coming into the game. It's gutting because of how hard we have worked this season. "It's football. It wasn't just this game, it was the bad run we had as well. It probably comes down to that, to be honest. "Coming so close makes it worse and we were 1-0 up. The goal we conceded was soft and it wasn't like us. Everyone has given their all this season but we are all gutted." ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement Despite the frustration, there has been tangible progress made. Rovers needed to win at Leicester City on the final day last year just to secure their status as a Championship club. Whilst that doesn't ease the frustration of this term, Travis believes a seven-place finish has proven some of their doubters wrong. "The club wasn't in a fantastic place at the end of last season, although I wasn't here for it," he admitted. "We've finished two points off the play-offs. We want to build on that next season. We were tipped to go down this year, which we were disrespected by. We have shown what we can do. ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement "I think we have proven some people wrong, a never-say-die attitude. It's been tough in some parts, changing managers. Everyone has come out the other side of that bad run but that has cost us. "The fans haven't been happy at times. On a personal note, they have always been behind me and the players. I am forever grateful for that. "They want to see the lads in the Premier League and we want to be there. It's a massive club and we deserve to be in there. We will try and make that happen. "We will take some time to rest and recover, spend time with our families and be ready for pre-season." ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement For Travis personally, it's been a good season. He has been a mainstay in the team and one of the best performers, having finished last term earning promotion at Ipswich Town. "Coming into this year, I felt like I'd been written off but I've reminded people that I'm still here," he added. "I want to be one of the main people in the team and push the club forward. I love this club. "Overall, it's been a positive season for me but I am gutted we couldn't get in the play-offs."
