Govt has given jobs to 18 whose kin were political clash victims: Tripura min
Agartala: The BJP-led govt has so far provided permanent jobs to 18 people whose family members have been victims of political violence, state parliamentary affairs minister Ratan Lal Nath on Saturday. Nath said a large number of opposition supporters, during the 35-year regime of the Left Front govt, had been victims of political violence, with most of them being the breadwinners of their families. "Losing their breadwinners, the families landed in distress. Neither justice was ensured nor were they given any assistance from the govt," Nath said. However, after the BJP-IPFT alliance came to power in 2018, the state govt decided to support the families of those who had lost their loved ones to political violence, Nath added. So far, 39 applications have been received, out of which 18 have already been provided jobs, the minister said. The state govt has constituted a panel for scrutiny of applications received for providing employment to family members of those individuals killed in political clashes, he added. The committee, headed by Nath and comprising senior bureaucrats and police officials, examine the applications based on reports from district magistrates and superintendents of police. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trading CFD dengan Teknologi dan Kecepatan Lebih Baik IC Markets Mendaftar Undo "From 1983 to 2018, several individuals lost their lives due to political clashes. Tripura govt gives jobs to kin of 18 people killed in political violence before 2018
The Tripura government has provided jobs to 18 people whose family members were killed in political violence in the state before 2018, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said in Agartala on Saturday. The minister said 39 petitions were submitted to the scrutiny committee, and 18 people were offered jobs in various departments. Nath is the chairman of the scrutiny committee, which also comprises the law secretary, secretary of information and cultural affairs, an inspector general of police, and the additional secretary of the home department. 'Another meeting of the committee was held on June 19. We got eight more petitions, and five of the names were recommended. We are reviewing the remaining petitions,' the minister told reporters at the Civil Secretariat. 'We give due respect to democracy. We feel that supporting the family members of those who were killed in political violence is our moral duty. Our government has not shown any discrimination on the basis of political affiliations in this case,' he said. The BJP-led coalition government first came to power in the state in 2018, unseating the erstwhile CPI(M)-led Left Front government which had ruled the state for 25 consecutive years. Criticising the previous government, Nath said, 'Several political murders happened before 2018 during the earlier government's tenure. Murders and political violence are not healthy for democracy. If it happens, it is a failure and embarrassment for shame for the government'. He, however, could not give an exact figure of the political murders that purportedly occurred prior to 2018. 'Petitions received are of cases from different years like 1983, 1987, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1998,1981, 2015, 2016, 2017…,' he said. Nath added that those who wish to apply under the scheme should collect forms from the sub-divisional magistrates' offices. These applications will be assessed by the committee based on inputs shared by district magistrates and superintendents of police. 'If the names are approved by the committee, it will be forwarded to the Finance Department, and based on vacancies in different departments, they will be given jobs,' he added.

Bengal govt's shift from industry incentives sparks business concern
Incentives - or the lack thereof and outstanding dues - have long been a pet peeve of the industry premium Ishita Ayan Dutt Listen to This Article Mamata Banerjee's economic priorities have long been clear. In 2011, she created history by ending the Left Front's 34-year rule in West Bengal piggybacking on the movements against land acquisition in Singur and Nandigram — sites for a Tata Nano factory and a proposed 14,000-acre chemical hub, respectively. More than a decade later, Banerjee-led government's move to revoke industrial incentives to free up resources for welfare schemes, underscores that strategic direction once again, ahead of the Assembly elections next year. Welfare over industry?

West Bengal govt to allow residential consumers to opt out from power smart meters: Official
KOLKATA : Amid protests over alleged inflated electricity bills following the installation of prepaid smart meters, the West Bengal government has decided to allow residential power consumers to opt out from the system and revert to traditional devices, an official said on Tuesday. The government had on Monday temporarily suspended fresh installations of smart meters for domestic consumers, he said. "The installation of smart meters for residential consumers has been temporarily suspended, but there is no plan for a mass recall. Consumers can choose to switch back to conventional meters," the official said. The prepaid smart meter installation will continue for commercial and government establishments, the official said. The decision comes after the BJP and the Left Front have been accusing the Trinamool Congress government of "burdening households with sudden tariff hikes and opaque smart meter installation". There had been protests in districts such as Howrah, North 24 Parganas, and Bardhaman, where people alleged their bills doubled or tripled after smart meter installations. The Mamata Banerjee government had earlier approved large-scale smart meter deployment to help the cash-strapped utility, West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd, recover dues. The state government departments alone owed over Rs 1,500 crore to the discom, which has a total debt of Rs 15,400 crore in the 2023-24 fiscal, the official said. In May, Polaris Smart Metering secured a Rs 2,246-crore contract to install 2.2 million smart meters in West Bengal under the Centre's Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).
