On this day: Bias dies; Carlisle draft; Carr hired as coach; Boston trades back for Tatum
On this day: Bias dies; Carlisle draft; Carr hired as coach; Boston trades back for Tatum On this day in 1986, Len Bias, the Boston Celtics' selection with the No. 2 pick of the 1986 NBA draft, died just two days after his selection by the team. Bias, a highly-rated 6-foot-8 small forward out of the University of Maryland, returned home from the June 17 draft in New York City and went to a party at his alma mater. He and several friends used cocaine for several hours, triggering a fatal arrhythmia. The loss devastated the family, friends, Celtics, and the wider basketball world. It was a major catalyst of a two-decade decline for the Celtics. They did not win another championship after Bias' death until 2008. It is also the date of the 1984 NBA draft, in which the Celtics took two players of note. The first was Michael Young, a 6-foot-7 small forward drafted out of the University of Houston. He never played for the Celtics but managed to carve out a career for himself overseas, with short stints playing for the Phoenix Suns and Philadelphia 76ers before landing a deal with the Los Angeles Clippers in 1989-90, his last in the NBA. The Celtics also drafted a 6-foot-5 shooting guard out of Virginia by the name of Rick Carlisle. Fans today typically know him as a recent head coach of the Dallas Mavericks, but he played five seasons in the NBA as a player, three of which with Boston. He won a championship with the team in 1986 (and made a bit of an awkward cameo in Michael Jordan's "Last Dance" documentary) while averaging 2.2 points and 1.1 assists per game with the Celtics. Boston also hired, on this date, M.L. Carr as head coach, a job he held for two seasons with a team he also played for in the 1980s. Carr's tenure as head coach for the team (1995-97) was the effective low point in Celtics history. The 1996-97 season produced the worst win total in Celtics history, with just 15 wins. Carr resigned at the end of that season, leaving with a 48-116 coaching record, the worst winning percentage (.293) in franchise history. Finally, it is also the day in 2017 that then-team president Danny Ainge traded the top pick for the No. 3 pick owned by the Philadelphia 76ers, which the club used to draft Jayson Tatum three days later. The deal netted Boston another first-round pick that was used on Romeo Langford for the trouble of taking the player Ainge would have selected first anyway.

Fanatics Fest will have $200 million of Michael Jordan, LeBron James memorabilia on display in NYC
Start spreading the sports-nerd news: Fanatics Fest is returning to New York City this June, and it's not showing up empty-handed. The three-day mega-convention will include a showstopping exhibition called the "Museum of Greatness," a $200 million pop-up sports shrine filled with ultra-rare memorabilia from athletic legends like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, Tom Brady and more. Running June 20–22 at the Javits Center, this year's Fanatics Fest is taking over Manhattan's West Side with even more star power and collectibles than its debut last summer, which drew more than 70,000 attendees. But the main event this time is a 10,500-square-foot museum packed with iconic gear, jaw-dropping trading cards and one-of-a-kind treasures collectors thought they'd never see in person. Among the crown jewels: LeBron's $10 million Ultimate Rookie Logoman card, MJ's 'Last Dance' jersey from the 1998 NBA Finals and a one-of-a-kind Fleer Metal Gem Masters card valued at $4.5 million. You'll also find Kobe Bryant's NBA Finals jersey, Ohtani's 2024 All-Star uniform and more than 30 Tom Brady cards (some featuring game-worn Super Bowl fabric, no big deal). Organizers say the Museum of Greatness will have over 20 themed zones—from 'GOATs' to 'Rising Stars'—highlighting players across eras and sports. It's basically the Louvre for collectors, if the Mona Lisa wore cleats. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Topps (@topps) But this isn't just for hardcore hobbyists. With over 500 athletes, celebs, and creators appearing throughout the weekend, the fest doubles as a who's-who of sports culture. Expect autograph sessions, live panels, merch drops, and interactive brand activations from leagues like the NFL, NBA, MLB and WWE. And yes, security will be tighter than a Knicks playoff schedule. With millions on display—including Babe Ruth and Messi memorabilia—round-the-clock surveillance is a given.

Rare Michael Jordan jersey from 1992-93 sells for whopping $2.6 million
Michael Jordan. Image via: Franck Fife/AFP/Getty Images In a powerful reminder of Michael Jordan 's enduring legacy, a rare game-worn jersey and shorts from the Chicago Bulls' 1992-93 season sold for a staggering $2.623 million at Heritage Auctions. This eye-catching sale, which included the buyer's premium. The insane price tag shows how highly prized Jordan memorabilia remains among collectors and fans alike. Michael Jordan's 1992-93 jersey sold for a stunning $2.6 million Michael Jordan has certainly been one of the NBA's most talked-about, cultural phenoms, a legend, and arguably the best in the league. What makes this jersey particularly extraordinary is its documented history and significance. Photo-matching experts at MeiGray and Sports Investors Authentication (SIA) have verified the uniform was worn by Jordan in at least 17 games, spanning from November 6, 1992, to March 24, 1993. The jersey was part of the Bulls' journey to their first-ever three-peat and Jordan's third NBA title. 'We believe this jersey was very likely worn every road game from November 6, 1992 to March 24, 1993,' said SIA in its authentication letter. The exact jersey was worn by Jordan on the October 18, 1993 cover of Sports Illustrated, just before he shocked the world by announcing his first retirement at the age of 30. The cover simply read, 'WHY?', capturing the collective disbelief of fans everywhere. This was a huge season for the Bulls and for Jordan himself. He led the league in scoring for the seventh consecutive year, tying Wilt Chamberlain's legendary record. His dominance peaked during the NBA Finals, where he averaged 41 points per game, still the highest in Finals history. That performance sealed the Bulls' victory over the Phoenix Suns. The condition of the jersey adds another layer of intrigue. Heritage Auctions noted it had 'monumental game wear far exceeding any Jordan' item they've previously handled. The fabric was visibly softened from repeated laundering. This set is also the only known Jordan uniform from that season to be photo-matched to so many appearances. Though the $2.623 million sale is impressive, it still falls short of the record for Jordan memorabilia. That distinction belongs to the 'Last Dance' jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals, which sold for $10.091 million in 2022 — the most ever paid for a game-worn sports collectible. Other notable Jordan auctions include: -Six Air Jordan sneakers — one from each championship win — which sold for $8 million in 2023 via Sotheby's. -A 1996-97 season jersey, which helped anchor an $8.5 million collection of Jordan memorabilia.
