Ricky Williams slams Texas lawmakers in explosive lawsuit, claiming the hemp THC ban defies federal law and endangers the rights of millions

Ricky Williams has always been more than just a football player. After a career marked by big runs and bold choices, the former Dolphins star is stepping into a different kind of spotlight—this time as a defender of cannabis rights. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In June 2025, Williams joined a federal lawsuit aimed at stopping a proposed Texas law that would ban hemp-derived THC products like Delta-8. 'Texas is attempting to outlaw these items against the will of hundreds of thousands of voters,' the legal complaint states. Now, Williams is bringing his voice—and his influence—to a battle that could change everything. Ricky Williams warns Texas hemp THC ban could devastate the state's cannabis economy, risking billions in revenue and hundreds of small businesses It all started when Texas lawmakers introduced a bill that would classify many hemp-based THC products as Schedule I substances—putting them in the same category as heroin and LSD. If passed, the law would force shops across the state to pull popular items like gummies, vapes, and oils off the shelves. That didn't sit right with Williams. So he teamed up with the Cannabis Freedom Alliance and signed onto a lawsuit challenging the proposed ban. Filed in Texas and cited in a report by ProFootballTalk, the suit argues that the state can't just override federal law. Specifically, it points to the 2018 Farm Bill, which legalized hemp-derived cannabinoids nationwide. The suit also warns that Texas is threatening to undo years of work by businesses and farmers who've built a thriving industry under the protections of that law. And for Williams, this fight is personal. Ricky Williams blasts Texas for ignoring science and silencing choice, calling the hemp THC ban a reckless move that punishes athletes seeking natural recovery Speaking at a wellness event in Austin, Williams didn't hold back. 'Cannabis allowed me to extend my athletic career and recover without prescription drugs,' he said. Since retiring from the NFL in 2011, Ricky Williams has leaned into a lifestyle built around healing—teaching yoga, practicing meditation, and advocating for holistic wellness. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now To him, cannabis isn't just a talking point. It's a tool that helped him cope with pain, both physical and emotional. Now he's using his platform to push back. Through social media, interviews, and public appearances, Williams has urged Texans to stand up for their rights. 'This ban doesn't just affect me—it affects small businesses, farmers, and consumers. Communities,' he said during a recent livestream. Why Ricky Williams' fight against Texas' cannabis ban could set a national precedent Texas lawmakers say they're concerned about the potency of products like Delta-8 and how they're marketed to younger audiences. But critics argue that strict regulation—not a flat-out ban—is the real solution. Other states, like Idaho and Wyoming, have already tossed out similar laws in court. This lawsuit could be the next to set a precedent. Legal experts say the outcome might not just shape policy in Texas—it could influence what happens nationwide. If the courts side with Williams and his legal team, hemp-derived THC products would remain protected. But if the state wins? It could be the first domino in a wave of bans. Ricky Williams may be done running on the field, but he's not done running toward what he believes in. With this lawsuit, he's putting his name—and his legacy—on the line for something bigger than football. Whether or not the courts agree with him, one thing's clear: Williams isn't afraid to challenge the system. Not when he thinks people's rights are on the line. Also Read:

Coronation Street star teases 'big' scenes ahead amid dangerous drugs plot

Coronation Street's Summer Spellman actress Harriet Bibby has revealed all about the ITV soap's LSD storyline, while she teased to The Mirror 'big' scenes are on the way One Coronation Street star has promised "big" scenes ahead on the ITV soap in the coming months. Summer Spellman actress Harriet Bibby spoke exclusively to The Mirror about the upcoming storylines for her character. She also teased the 65th anniversary plans for later this year, and the big Emmerdale crossover airing in 2026. ‌ After months of not being onscreen much, Harriet explained to us that she was having a quieter year following the huge and emotional 2024 storyline, that saw Summer's father figure Paul Foreman die after battling motor neurone disease. Summer featured heavily in this storyline, with lots of difficult scenes for actress Harriet. ‌ Often in soaps when a character features in a massive storyline, they tend to then go quiet which is what has happened with Summer. But that's all about to change as next week, she takes centre stage once more. This time, Summer and other characters are caught up in a drugs storyline, as three characters take LSD at a house party. What follows is a dramatic and devastating sequence of events. Teasing more from Summer ahead, Harriet told us: "I've had a quieter year this year after the big storyline with Paul last year. It was brilliant, we loved doing it even though every day we were in tears. "We will be seeing more of Summer in the coming months." Harriet also teased the big stuff on the way, saying: "I'm really excited about the crossover. It's never been done before. It will be fun and a little different. "I am hoping to be a part of it but we have no idea. I'd love to meet the Dingles." When asked about the 65th, she said: "I'm the worst person to ask, everything you're asking me I'm asking the bosses! It will be something big though." ‌ As for the huge drugs storyline that is coming up, Harriet teased what the fallout will be with it clear something has happened, and that Summer and pal Nina Lucas have been witnesses to something while high. Revealing "the night takes a turn", she teased: "Even with no drugs in their system they'd be feeling really shocked, upset and concerned about what's just happened. "So times that by 10 with the LSD they've got in their system and they're distraught. They're really worried and really scared about what's just happened." Harriet went on: "They figure out that they've witnessed something. "They have different opinions on what to do with this and it causes a little bit of friction between them. Nina thinks they should tell someone and report it whereas Summer is more convinced that they don't know what they've seen because they were affected by the LSD so there's no point in reporting anything as they don't know for sure that something happened. "They're very confused by what they think they saw because they're unsure about what was reality and what was not." On the future impact of the huge plot, she shared: "I think when you find yourselves in quite dangerous situations, and it's not just Summer and Nina who are affected, you look back and think that was a really stupid idea. It affects a lot of different people in different ways and it could have been avoided if these drugs were not at the party."

Coronation Street finally confirms if Kit is really Brody's dad

Is Kit Green a father? (Picture: ITV) Kit Green (Jacob Roberts) was thrown when he discovered Brody Michaelis (Ryan Mulvey) might be his son in Coronation Street recently. When he learned that Lou (Farrel Hegarty) and Mick (Joe Layton)'s boy was 16 years old, he realised the dates fitted the time when Mick was in prison – and Kit and Lou had a fling together. Lou, however, has been denying that Brody is Kit's son. This has left Kit unsure about where he stands, although we've seen his behaviour towards Brody reflecting the fact that there's part of him that really believes he could be Brody's dad. He's let him off with a warning after catching him stealing, and when he found Brody having an epileptic seizure Kit took care of him and stayed with him at the hospital until Lou arrived. Bernie (Jane Hazlegrove) quickly warmed to the idea that she could be Brody's granny and urged Kit to do a DNA test to confirm whether this was really the case. She even 'borrowed' Brody's cap while he was in hospital to get some hairs off it for testing purposes. DNA duly dispatched, Kit is about to get the answer he's been waiting for – and it will change his world forever. Kit finally gets some answers (Picture: ITV) Kit used to hang out with Lou and Mick when they were younger (Picture: ITV) Brody is causing trouble again on the Street when Aadi (Adam Hussain) throws a midsummer-themed party at number 7, and Brody decides there's money to be made supplying LSD to Weatherfield's youth. Aadi kicks Brody out after seeing him with the drugs, but he doesn't go quietly and there's a fight. Then, with Brody gone, Aadi, Summer (Harriet Bibby) and Nina (Mollie Gallagher) prepare to take the LSD. Aadi, however, is distracted and when he comes back someone else has taken his share. With all of this going on at number 7, elsewhere Kit has had the DNA results. Bernie is desperate to find out whether she really is Brody's granny – and Kit confirms she is. He's the boy's dad.
