Ex-PL referee David Coote charged by English FA over comments about Jurgen Klopp

FORMER PREMIER LEAGUE referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over remarks he made about ex-Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked last December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory comments about Klopp in July 2020. One of those remarks referenced Klopp's nationality, and the FA said that constituted an alleged 'aggravated breach' under its rules. The FA said Coote would face no further action in regard to separate allegations of gambling misconduct, which he had strenuously denied. The FA said those allegations had been fully investigated. Advertisement PGMOL said in confirming Coote's dismissal last December that his position had become 'untenable' after the video surfaced. In it, Coote is heard saying it had been 's***' to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020, describing Klopp as a 'German c***'. He also said Klopp was 'f****** arrogant'. Coote was banned by European football's governing body UEFA in February until June 30, 2026 after a different video emerged of him snorting a white powder through a bank note while in Germany for last summer's Euros. In January, Coote came out as gay in an interview with The Sun and said that a lifelong struggle to hide his sexuality had contributed to the rant about Klopp, and to his drug use. 'My sexuality isn't the only reason that led me to be in that position. But I'm not telling an authentic story if I don't say that I'm gay and that I've had real struggles with hiding that,' he said. 'I hid my emotions as a young ref and I hid my sexuality as well — a good quality as a referee but a terrible quality as a human being. And that's led me to a whole course of behaviours.' The FA has not shared a date by which Coote must respond to the charge. Coote has not been charged in relation to messages exchanged with a Leeds fan concerning the issuing of a yellow card in 2019. As the Klopp charge is an alleged case of discrimination, the PA news agency understands an independent regulatory commission will deal with the matter, and impose sanctions as it sees fit if Coote accepts the charge or it is found proven. Coote declined to comment when contacted via a spokesperson.

Salford battle to get deal with Warrington for Sam Stone after ‘downing tools'

SALFORD are battling to not lose Sam Stone to Warrington for nothing. SunSport understands the back rower is claiming he resigned from the Red Devils and should be a free agent after refusing to play. 2 Salford are fighting to get something from a move that will see Sam Stone head to Warrington after 'downing tools.' Credit: The Wolves are close to completing a swoop for the Australian, with angered boss Paul Rowley claiming talks have been ongoing since pre-season. Now it is believed that rather than a transfer fee, Super League's basement boys are trying to negotiate a move that will see one or more players move in the opposite direction for the test of the campaign. That would reduce the wage bill even more as salaries are taken care of by the parent club but would still give the coach options to select from. Stone's imminent departure would make it eight top stars to have departed since Sire Kailahi and Curtiz Brown took ownership of Salford. And Rowley fumed: 'On Saturday, he downed tools. 'I'm fully understanding of everyone's position, thresholds and tolerance but that situation really put us in a bit of strife. MOST READ IN RUGBY LEAGUE 'The manner of it's not good. There's a way of doing things and that's not the way. If you make a decision that hurts your team-mates then it's not a good decision. 'Sam's been talking to another club since pre-season, so now he's fit I guess that move can start to take shape.' Most read in Rugby League While Stone, 27, is next to leave, SunSport understands Kailahi and Brown claim as many as seven players may be coming in, if finance comes good. 2 Salford boss Paul Rowley admitted the Australian refused to play against St Helens Credit: So far, their ownership has been a disaster and Rowley has been forced to blood kids, with painter and decorator Sam Hill scoring a try against St Helens on Sunday. And until money is in the bank account, he can only dream as he added: 'Until it's tangible and real, you're wasting your energy trying to make up a team of make believe players. 'I just crack on with the lads we've got.'

George Williams back from injury with the aim of Warrington Wembley glory

GEORGE Williams will return bidding to grasp Warrington's second chance of Wembley glory and make it third time lucky for himself. The England captain will be back after missing seven weeks with ruptured ankle ligaments. 2 George Williams (pictured with Hull KR's Elliot Minchella) will be back from injury for Warrington's Challenge Cup final bid. Credit: And he is out to avenge last year's Challenge Cup final loss to Wigan and losing 2017's showpiece to Hull FC when he was with the Warriors. But despite the quick recovery, he is adamant he is not risking it for the sake of it. Williams said: 'I'm not stupid. Obviously, if I didn't feel like I could do a job and then have to come off, then I wouldn't put my hand up 'My rehab has gone really, really well. Fingers crossed that I'm alright, but I feel really good. I've always been a quick healer. 'And Wembley was an easy goal. If you know you do everything right and you play at Wembley, you do it. 'But I won the Grand Final at the third attempt, hopefully history can repeat itself. Win this weekend and my memories of Wembley will be formed.' MOST READ IN RUGBY LEAGUE Warrington have been on the big stage already this year – and flopped in Las Vegas. So Williams knows Sam Burgess' side needs to live up to the billing against Hull KR on Saturday. Most read in Rugby League He added: 'Last year we fell short at Wembley. In Vegas, we didn't perform at all and with this group obviously since Sam took over, we've not won anything. 'So this is our second chance at Wembley. I think we had 10 or 11 lads that had never played in the final before and I think the occasion got the better of us. 'There are no excuses this time around, even though we're playing against the top of the league. Now they've tasted defeat there and thought, 'I don't want to do that again.' 2 Hull KR star Mikey Lewis is the main man for the Robins. Credit: "So have I. Hopefully now we can right some wrongs.' Williams' return sets up an almighty duel at stand-off with Rovers star Mikey Lewis, a man known for making a big noise on the pitch. Off it, though, things can be very different as his national skipper told SunSport: 'Speaking from my experience, when we're with England it can be pretty quiet. 'II's pretty weird. Mikey's playing to the crowd, he's doing what he does but he's playing well, so it's hard to argue with that.'
