Breach of privilege proceedings against Kunal Kamra to begin soon
The breach of privilege proceedings against stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra over his parody song targeting Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde will begin soon, a senior official said on Saturday (June 14, 2025). BJP legislator Pravin Darekar had moved the notice against the comedian and Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson Sushma Andhare in the state legislative council during the budget session in March. Also Read | Kunal Kamra funded by 'anti-India' organisations abroad, claims Sanjay Nirupam Legislature secretary Jitendra Bhole said, "Legislative council chairperson Ram Shinde has forwarded the notice to the privilege committee headed by BJP MLC Prasad Lad." When contacted, Mr. Lad told PTI that the committee headed by him met to discuss the breach of privilege notice, and he had initiated the process of issuing notice to Kamra and Andhare. In March, Mr. Kamra, known for his no-holds-barred stand-up comedy at the expense of politicians and celebrities, incurred the wrath of Shinde's supporters in March with a song targeting the Shiv Sena President.

We have also recently seen comedians, politicians, film stars, activists, and influencers on the wrong side of the law because their social messaging, humour, or satire is deemed discriminatory, divisive, polarising, or outright abusive. The result is a polity overwhelmed by innumerable debates on free speech limits and eroding ethics, and courts overcrowded by the likes of Rahul Gandhi, Prem Shukla and Munawar Faruqui, who insist they are victims of deliberate attempts to misinterpret or twist their comments out of context.

Shreya Dhanwanthary on Mumbai's waterlogging woes after heavy rains: 'Is this not more offensive than a joke in habitat'
Actor Shreya Dhanwanthary has expressed her frustration over the waterlogging issue in Mumbai following heavy rainfall. She took to Instagram to take a swipe at the city's infrastructure and governance. Shreya vented her frustration on Instagram about Mumbai's waterlogging woes amidst the heavy rainfall. Shreya shared a note on her Instagram Stories, alongside a photo of a waterlogged road. 'Dear government, is this not more offensive than some joke said in some habitat? Tell me. The fact that our roads, our drainage and our infrastructure is the biggest offensive joke, but no one is coming (to) break anything? Now this is okay? Monsoon hasn't even arrived yet and we are CRIPPLED! Mumbai could handle 1000 mm of rain before it flooded in 2005,' Shreya shared. She added, 'Now we can't handle 100mm!!! Jokes and words are so offensive that you file FIRs and demand an apology? Where is our apology now? What are you going to blame now? Who are we going file FIRs against when someone like Brij Bhushan gets acquitted?! Oh what a ridiculous joke we live in'. Through her post, Shreya referenced the recent controversies surrounding comedian Kunal Kamra, whose performance led to the vandalism of the Habitat Comedy Club, as well as the backlash faced by Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia for their comments on India's Got Latent. Shreya made her debut with the 2009 Telugu film Josh. She made her Bollywood debut with Why Cheat India 10 years later in 2019. Her breakthrough came with Hansal Mehta's 2020 financial thriller show Scam 1992. A day after the India Meteorological Department declared the onset of the monsoon, the city received the highest one-day rainfall in May since 2021, when the extremely severe cyclonic storm, Cyclone Tauktae, which was said to be the worst cyclone in the last four decades, brushed passed the city. In the 24 hours ending at 8.30am on Tuesday, the city baseline weather station in Santacruz recorded 144 mm of rain while Colaba recorded 161.9 mm. Both weather stations recorded the highest rainfall in 24 hours since 2021 and the second highest in the last decade. The India Meteorological Department forecast a "generally cloudy sky with heavy rain" for the financial capital on Wednesday (May 28).

EXCLUSIVE: Salman Khan-hosted Bigg Boss 19 to stream on a Viacom platform in August
There have been a lot of discussions around Colors TV's popular reality show Bigg Boss returning with a new season both on OTT and television. From speculation that it may be nixed due to falling TRPs to a shorter season — Salman Khan-hosted show has constantly been in the news. However, SCREEN has exclusively learned that Bigg Boss is definitely returning. According to our source, Bigg Boss' new season will appear either in the last week of July or early August. Also, meetings are still on internally to decide whether one long season will run, or the team will retain the same old format of OTT, followed by the TV version. The source tells us, 'What is sure is that the show will happen with the Viacom group, mostly on Jio Hotstar, however, clarity on the same is yet to come.' 'As of now, it's not decided if the OTT version will air first or the TV version, it might just happen in the same old way, it has been running all this while,' the source added. It is also said that the teams are considering an OTT-first model for this season, however, there are no confirmations on the show's duration or platform, or even the versions it will appear in. Several media reports suggest that Salman Khan will shoot for the new season's promo by the end of June. Another update doing the rounds about the show is that the makers will go be to a celebs-only format, and the latest addition will not have any social media influencers in the mix. However, no confirmation around the casting has been made yet. The last season of Bigg Boss 18 was won by actor Karanveer Mehra, while Vivian Dsena became the runner-up.

‘Manhoos, drunkard' Kunal Kamra gets mercilessly roasted by fellow comics: ‘His favourite position is opposition'
Comedian Kunal Kamra is no stranger to controversy; his latest special caused a stir among a certain section of the audience, who took offence to jokes he made about some politicians. They destroyed the venue where the special was shot, and Kamra was hit with several FIRs. The comic splits his time between Himachal Pradesh and Puducherry, and has been put on the no-fly list by several airlines after an altercation that he had with TV journalist Arnab Goswami. He appeared on the latest episode of Ashish Solanki's Roast show on YouTube, where a panel of comics joked about Kamra's edgy comedy, growing 'irrelevance', and his 'saviour' attitude. Kamra was seen laughing along as his friends and colleagues took aim at him in the roast, a format of stand-up comedy where people poke fun at a person, no holds barred. Solanki described Kamra has 'manhoos', citing his appearance on Samay Raina's equally controversial series India's Got Latent. The first comic to take shots at Kamra was Sumaira Shaikh, also implied that he is a drunk. 'Kamra has become a farmer, the first farmer who gives alcohol to his plants,' she joked. 'Saviour ban ke ghoomta hai, Muslim comics and female comics ka. Apne baal toh bacha nahi paaya,' she continued. Sumaira finished her set with another reference at the India's Got Latent controversy. He continued, 'Kamra sunta sabki hai lekin karta Congress ki hai.' He finished with, 'Kamra has been doing political comedy for years, but he has converted nobody. sleeper cells are more active than him. As an aware citizen, I don't want him on my team.' The biggest laugh came for a joke by comic Onkar Yadav, who joked, 'Kamra thinks Latent is Balraj's show, kyunki Kashmiri Pandit toh isse dikhte nahi.' This was another reference at India's Got Latent; the show was filmed at The Habitat, owned by Balraj Ghai, and hosted by Samay Raina, whose Pandit culture is a big part of his artistry. Comic Daahab Chishti took the centrestage next, and shot off a series of jokes: 'Kamra is my favourite comic because I lost my taste after Covid. Kamra's favourite position is opposition. Kamra thinks spanking means lathi charge.' Kamra's childhood friend, Siddharth Dudeja, called him a 'drug addict, drunkard, and cigarette smoker.' He joked, 'They sent murders after him, but even they gave up. They thought let's focus our energy on Ravish, this guy will kill himself with that lifestyle.' The show ended with Kamra taking the centrestage and, as he did in his controversial recent special, held up the Constitution of India. 'Let me say something while I'm still relevant. if anybody has an issue with comedy, you can file a case within the framework of the constitution, and we can respond,' he said.
