1 reason for Seahawks optimism in 2025

1 reason for Seahawks optimism in 2025 Pro Football Focus recently wrote an article outlining one reason for optimism for all 32 teams in the league. The Seattle Seahawks underwent significant changes this offseason. The most helpful change may have occurred at offensive tackle, where Klint Kubiak was hired in place of the fired Ryan Grubb. "Seattle has seen a ton of offensive turnover this offseason," Dalton Wasserman wrote. "That unit's next era will be led by former Saints offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak, who did a nice job of creating production when he had a viable starting quarterback in New Orleans last season." "Flanking Kubiak in Seattle will be quarterback Sam Darnold, who played in San Francisco with Kubiak as his quarterbacks coach in 2023," Wasserman continued. "If Darnold can maintain the 80.7 PFF overall grade he recorded in a similar offense last season, the Seahawks' offense could be in good shape." The Seahawks are certainly hoping that the existing relationship and familiarity between Kubiak and new starting quarterback Sam Darnold will lead to positive on-field results. Grubb, the previous OC, routinely looked in over his head. That's why head coach Mike Macdonald fired him after one season. Kubiak could help the Seahawks' offense greatly improve in 2025.

Familiar faces make visit to Seahawks OTAs

OTAs represent a great opportunity for old coaches and familiar faces to visit previous stomping grounds. The Seattle Seahawks hosted a pair of intriguing retired coaches on visits at Thursday's OTA practice. Gary Kubiak and Jim Zorn were both in attendance, according to photos captured by Bob Condotta. The legendary Kubiak officially retired from coaching in 2021 after 29 successful years in the profession. He never coached for the Seahawks, but his son Klint Kubiak is the team's new offensive coordinator and play-caller. The elder Kubiak was likely checking in with how his son is acclimating to his new surroundings. Advertisement The Kubiak's coached together with the Denver Broncos in 2016. They reunited with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 for two seasons (through 2020). Klint Kubiak has since flourished, climbing the coaching ladder before landing in Seattle as OC earlier this offseason. The 72-year-old Zorn was a star quarterback for the Seahawks from 1976 to 1984, establishing a legendary connection with franchise legend Steve Largent. Zorn was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor in 1991. He later had two separate coaching stints with the Seahawks, first as an offensive assistant in 1997, and then as quarterbacks coach from 2001 to 2007. Seahawks QB Sam Darnold is learning a new city and offense with plenty of support

RENTON, Wash. (AP) — First and foremost, Sam Darnold wants it to be known that he's not a good golfer. The Seattle Seahawks quarterback, who signed a $100.5 million, three-year contract in March, said he's a 10 handicap. The 27-year-old spends time on the course whenever he can during the offseason, and hopes to hike and keeping trying out restaurants in the Seattle area that he now calls home. Oh, and about that home. 'We bought a place, so to be honest, been moving a ton of furniture in,' Darnold said Wednesday. That's been the focus of Darnold's offseason outside of football. Five days into organized team activities, Darnold's top priority has been learning first-year offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak's playbook. Kubiak and Darnold were both with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, but much has changed since that season in the Bay Area, when Kubiak was a passing game coordinator and Darnold a backup. Kubiak spent last season as the New Orleans Saints' offensive coordinator. Darnold, meanwhile, enjoyed his finest NFL season, setting career highs in passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage while guiding the Minnesota Vikings to a 14-3 record. 'You see the tape, the tape tells it all. He grew a lot,' Kubiak said. 'He took an opportunity there and ran with it, and he's been doing a great job for us here.' Such praise only reinforces the obvious: Darnold is Seattle's starter. Coach Mike Macdonald said as much during an interview with KIRO-AM on Tuesday, when he was asked whether anything other than an injury to Darnold would prevent him from starting the season opener on Sept. 7. 'Sam's our starting quarterback,' Macdonald said. 'We love him. He's doing a tremendous job.' Darnold said he's a fan of the other quarterbacks in the meeting room, Jalen Milroe and Drew Lock. During the NFL draft in April, Macdonald called Darnold to let him know about the team's plans to select Milroe out of Alabama in the third round. It was a gesture of respect to the veteran QB, who signed just a month earlier. 'I think at the end of the day, communication is key,' Darnold said. 'But for him to be able to call and communicate about that, it was cool.' Darnold learned not to get rattled easily during stints in two big markets. He played in college at Southern California and then was drafted by the New York Jets, where he was considered a bust. He moved on to Carolina and San Francisco before resurrecting his career in Minnesota. Now, he comes to Seattle as a leader and face of the franchise. Working in Kubiak's system has eased his transition, but Kubiak was quick to point out — without giving away any secrets — that the Seahawks' offense will be uniquely its own. Darnold is seeking to absorb as much information as he can, and for now, he's leaving the golf clubs stowed away. 'Learning a ton right now,' Darnold said. 'Just building with the guys and just taking it one day at a time.' ___ AP NFL:

Ex Seattle Seahawks WR Disrespects 'Overrated' DK Metcalf

Ex Seattle Seahawks WR Disrespects 'Overrated' DK Metcalf originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-tooled their wide receivers room this offseason, first trading for Seattle Seahawks wideout DK Metcalf, then sending George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in another trade. Advertisement Pickens had seemingly worn out his welcome in Pittsburgh, and after the acquisition of Metcalf, Pickens was expendable. Metcalf was pretty successful in Seattle over the course of six seasons, posting 6,324 yards on 4438 catches with 48 touchdowns, and being widely regarded as one of the better pass catchers in the game. But one former Seahawks receiver thinks the Seahawks room is better after shipping Metcalf off to Pittsburgh. Bryan Walters said on the Brock and Salk podcast that he thinks Metcalf was "slightly overrated" in Seattle. "I've been very vocal about kind of my thoughts on DK as a wide receiver... and you know, maybe I'll be a little nice I guess, but slightly overrated,' Walters said. 'I think he's gonna do well in Pittsburgh, but at the same time I just think that they really revamped this wide receiver room to fit that [Klint] Kubiak scheme and a lot of guys that are better route runners and guys that just kinda complement each other. I think [Jaxon Smith-Njigba] and Cooper Kupp are gonna be so fun to watch together." Advertisement Walters and Metcalf never played together, so it's hard to imagine there's a personal issue between the two, but Metcalf's numbers can't be disputed. Since entering the league as a second-round pick out of Ole Miss in 2019, Metcalf boasts the sixth-most receiving yards in the NFL. And it's the numbers that the Steelers are looking at, even if they don't yet have a quarterback to throw him the ball. Rams' Rival's New Quarterback Must Be Taken Seriously

The Los Angeles Rams ended the Minnesota Vikings' season last year in the playoffs, largely due to their suffocating defense and their ability to generate pressure on Sam Darnold. It was a defensive masterclass from players like Jared Verse and Braden Fiske, who were rookies in their very first minutes of playoff football. Now, Darnold is the starting quarterback for their divisional rivals, the Seattle Seahawks, which means he will have to face the very same ferocious defensive line that obliterated him in the playoffs at least twice a year. The Seahawks are predicted by many analysts to fall off next season, after being the team closest to competing for the division with the Rams, ending the season with the same record as them, but not making it to the playoffs due to their strength of schedule being weaker than that of Los Angeles. Chris Trapasso is a sports writer for CBS Sports, and he recently published an article going over what each team's new starting quarterback brings to their team. He praises the Seahawks' signing of Darnold for his schematic fit with their offense. "On paper, by following coaching tree branches, Darnold and Seahawks new offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak should be an exquisite fit on paper from a scheme perspective. Klint Kubiak is the son of Gary Kubiak, who famously worked under Mike Shanahan in the late 1990s. Gary Kubiak has long ties to Kyle Shanahan -- and even gave Shanahan his first OC job with the Texans in 2008. And who is one of the primary branches off the still young, but exponentially growing Kyle Shanahan coaching tree? Kevin O'Connell, the Vikings head coach, who helped orchestrate Darnold's otherworldly resurgence from the land of draft busts in 2024, when he threw for over 4,300 yards with 35 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 102.5 rating, which ranked sixth in the NFL last season. As we saw in the extremely costly regular-season finale loss, and the subsequent wild-card defeat against the Rams, Darnold can implode. He also can also produce majestic highs, probably more so than the steadier Smith, whom Darnold has replaced in Seattle. In 2024, Darnold completed 36 passes with 20+ air yards, the highest figure among any quarterback in football. He did so with the third-highest adjusted completion rate (50.6%) on those deep passes". The Rams and Seahawks games have a lot of storylines converging next season, as Rams legendary wide receiver Cooper Kupp also joined them this offseason. Their games will be more heated than ever, with the Rams expected to be the heavy favorites. Ensure you follow on X (Twitter) @RamsInsideronSI and @BrockVierra and talk Darnold!
