Kenny Pickett named Steelers' clear-cut leader as Pittsburgh ushers in new chapter
(Image via Getty: Kenny Pickett) Kenny Pickett, the next Pittsburgh homeboy, was supposed to be the guy. A University of Pittsburgh icon, the 2022 draft pick injected optimism into a Steelers franchise after Ben Roethlisberger, which was in dire need of defining itself. And yet, with the 2025 NFL season on the doorstep, it's not Pickett calling the shots in the Steel City. Well, times change, and the Pickett story has taken an unexpected turn. Instead of taking Pittsburgh to war this year, Pickett is wearing orange and brown, dressing up as the Cleveland Browns, the Steelers' greatest nemesis. It's a surprise no one foresaw. Kenny Pickett's NFL career hits an unexpected detour Pickett followed a record-breaking near-perfection of the University of Pittsburgh's top passing records. It was more than 12,000 career passing yards and then-legendary 42-touchdown season as a senior in 2021. He was selected 20th overall by the Steelers in 2022. He was a starter in a few games and, for a time, looked to be growing into the Steelers' answer for quarterback long-term. In two seasons, he was 15–10 as a starter, demonstrating moments of composure and fourth-quarter strength. But with just 13 touchdown passes to 13 interceptions and a passer rating of 78.8, doubts started to creep in as to whether he could ever make that next step. The questions were answered in March 2024, when the Steelers traded Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. It was a shock move, not necessarily because of his hometown roots, but because it appeared to indicate that Pittsburgh was ready to move on cleanly. Again, though, in March 2025, he was traded. But to the Cleveland Browns, which stages one of the more intriguing quarterback battles in the NFL. Pickett is walking into a rich and dynamic QB room in Cleveland that features: Deshaun Watson , recovering from a second ruptured Achilles. Joe Flacco , the veteran who fueled a Browns playoff push in 2024. Shedeur Sanders , the extravagant rookie and former Colorado star. Dillon Gabriel, the other hyped rookie of the 2025 class. It's now or never. Pickett is just 26 and still possesses the skills that initially saw him drafted in the top 20. Specifically, his powerful right arm, lightning-speed feet, and leadership. But he's fighting for a spot on a talent-laden depth chart with no guarantee. Insider Predicts Radical QB Move By Browns
Insider Predicts Radical QB Move By Browns originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Cleveland Browns haven't had a lot of luck at the quarterback position over the past few decades. This season, they took a different approach, employing veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, and rookie draft picks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Advertisement Speculation has largely been that the Browns won't take all four players to the 53-man roster come the end of August, and that one would be the odd man out. But one Browns insider thinks there's a scenario where the team keeps all four. 'I absolutely think that they will do it,' Cabot reported on 92.3 WKRK-FM, aka "The Fan." 'I think you can almost count on it at the very beginning of the season while they work through their roster decisions and then I think from there, it's just a matter of time if they decide to hang on to all four through the trade deadline on November 4th, which would give them eight games to figure out where this whole thing is going, or if they want to just continue on and keep all four of them through the end of the season." That would be an unconventional and, honestly, a radical approach to the position and the 53-man roster for sure. Advertisement However, it would give Cleveland the best opportunity to evaluate all four players in potentially in-game action to see where they all fit in, if anywhere. For general manager Andrew Berry, it could also showcase all four for a possible trade of one. Browns Make Decision On Shedeur Sanders After Two Speeding Incidents
Browns Make Decision On Shedeur Sanders After Two Speeding Incidents originally appeared on The Spun. Colin Cowherd says he's "done" with Shedeur Sanders following the rookie quarterback's two speeding incidents in Ohio this month. But are the Cleveland Browns? The Fox Sports 1 host said on his Thursday, June 19 show that he is officially done with the 23-year-old rookie quarterback. "Shedeur Sanders got caught speeding over 100 MPH. Don't minimize it, don't pander. This is not good for a quarterback," he said on his "The Herd" show on Thursday afternoon, June 19. "I do not cling to opinions. New information, new opinion. I don't think about him the same. When you fall to (pick) 144 in the draft, and then you try to match that number behind the wheel of a car, I don't think the same. "You ignored signs about Manziel and Baker. And, apparently, based on the traffic violation, Shedeur was avoiding some signs, too - that say stop. I'm not sure he's mature enough. Now I'm going to have to like Kenny Pickett." But while Cowherd has said he's done with Sanders, are the Cleveland Browns done, too? The Browns are standing by Sanders - for now. A spokesman for the Cleveland Browns told that Sanders is handling his speeding tickets, while remaining a member of the franchise. "He is taking care of the tickets," team spokesman Peter John-Baptiste told the media outlet. Sanders, who slipped into the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft - he was the second quarterback taken by the Browns, who selected Dillon Gabriel out of Oregon - is still facing an uphill battle to make the roster. The Browns have Gabriel, Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett also at the quarterback position. Flacco and Pickett feel like locks to make the Week 1 roster. So, it could be Gabriel and Sanders fighting it out for the QB3 spot. Cleveland could decide to keep four quarterbacks, which is apparently a possibility, according to team insider Mary Kay Cabot, but that would be a rarity for an NFL team. 'Thanks in part to low base salaries and cap numbers for all of them, they can afford to keep all four from a financial standpoint, and it also makes sense from a roster building standpoint,' Cabot wrote. Sanders has work to do off the field, though. He must pay a $250 fine for the fourth-degree misdemeanor or fight the ticket in Strongsville Mayor's Court on July 3, following his latest speeding incident. The Browns are coming off a highly disappointing 3-14 season in 2024. Browns Make Decision On Shedeur Sanders After Two Speeding Incidents first appeared on The Spun on Jun 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jun 19, 2025, where it first appeared.

Browns reporter deals NFL Draft flop Shedeur Sanders another devastating blow amid 101mph reckless driving incident
Shedeur Sanders has been dealt another blow amid being caught by cops recklessly speeding on Tuesday. The quarterback, who fell to the fifth round of the NFL Draft before being selected by the Browns, was ticketed for allegedly driving 101mph in a 60mph zone, according to a citation viewed by the Daily Mail. And the quarterback has also received a setback on the football field, as one Browns insider believes he is currently fourth in the team's pecking order at the position. After watching the latest minicamp, Ashley Bastock said she felt 'no different' about the quarterback competition, with Kenny Pickett leading the way, rookie Dillon Gabriel behind him, Joe Flacco in third and Sanders behind the veteran. Pickett, a former first-round pick with the Eagles, has reportedly seen the majority of first-team reps, while Sanders is yet to take the field with the starters. However, the outlook on Sanders wasn't all bad as Bastock said he 'made the most of his reps' with reserve players and 'did what he needed to do' to potentially see first-team reps in this summer's training camp. Shedeur Sanders' pickup truck is pictured on the side of the road in this police footage During a minicamp practice on June 10, Sanders reportedly completed 10 of 12 passes and threw two touchdowns. Nonetheless, ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi previously reported that Sanders' roster spot isn't 'guaranteed' after the Browns were able to select him with the No. 144 pick. While he was at one point mooted to be an early first-round pick, Sanders reportedly rubbed teams the wrong way in meetings, while he also chose not to throw at the Combine. Ultimately, he signed a four-year, $4.6 million deal with Cleveland that included his $447,000 signing bonus – which represents the only guaranteed portion of the deal. By comparison, Titans' No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward - viewed as Sanders' rival through long periods of the draft process - signed a four-year, fully guaranteed $48.8million deal with Tennessee. It's not clear how much Sanders' ticket is for, though he can either chose to pay the fine or fight the ticket in court. Sanders and another driver identified as Jasmine Hammond were pulled over in the early hours of Tuesday morning in the Cleveland suburb of Strongsville, according to the citation. Hammond's relation to Sanders is unclear, but one officer is heard describing her in the footage as the former Colorado star's girlfriend. The citation lists Hammond's speed as 92mph, though an officer decided against ticketing Hammond, who is seen in footage of the traffic stop parked in her car behind Sanders' pickup truck in the clip. 'I'm gonna cut you a break,' the officer told Sanders. 'I'm not going to give her a ticket… but 101, I got a dash cam and stuff, man, like…' The first-year quarterback responded respectfully: 'I know.'

Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders issued citation for driving over 100 mph
Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders was pulled over and issued a citation early Tuesday morning for allegedly driving over 100 mph. According to Strongsville police records obtained by The Athletic, Sanders was pulled over at 12:24 a.m. on June 17. Police say he was driving 101 mph on 71 North, 41 miles over the speed limit. He can appear in court to fight the ticket or pay a fine. Advertisement Sanders was considered a potential first-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft but ended up a fifth-round selection by the Browns. He is competing with fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel as well as veterans Kenny Pickett and Joe Flacco for the starting quarterback job in Cleveland. The Browns wrapped up mandatory minicamp last week. Training camp begins in late July with rookies reporting on July 18 and veterans reporting on July 22.
