Work on major drinking water projects in Kochi inaugurated
KOCHI: The work on two 15-lakh litre water tank projects sanctioned under KWA's Amrut 2.0 sheme for Kochi Corporation was inaugurated by Water Resources Minister Roshy Augustine at an event held in Pallimukku on Saturday. The project approved last year with an estimated cost of Rs 15.51 crore includes construction of a 15 lakh litre over-head tank and a 15 lakh litre on-ground tank in Ward 60 in Perumanoor. The project aims to ensure smooth water supply to General Hospital and Thevara zones. The project is expected to be completed in a year. Additionally, work on Karumalloor- Kunnukkara drinking water scheme of Kalamassery municipality was also inaugurated on Saturday. The project is aimed at solving the drinking water requirements of residents in Kunnukara-Karumalloor panchayats. The Rs 51.30-crore project that will be implemented using KIIFB funds includes a 20 mld water treatment plant, an over-head tank in Malayikunnu, pumping stations, a 10.50 lakh litre overhead tank in Manjali, and a 250mm DIK9 clear main line to UC College overhead tank. The capacity of the project has been increased to 20mld to include Alangad panchayat as well in the distribution network. 'The project aims to ensure adequate drinking water supply to Kunnukara and Karumalloor areas for the next 50 years,' said Industries Minister P Rajeeve who spoke at the inaugural function of the event.

Minister hands over compensation for Phase II of Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road project
Thiruvananthapuram : Food and civil supplies minister GR Anil on Saturday handed over the compensation for Phase II of the Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road project to district collector Anu Kumari. At a formal event held in collectorate conference hall, the minister handed over a cheque of Rs 44.64 crore. The 20km-long and 13m-wide Pazhakutty–Mangalapuram Road is being developed with a total investment of Rs 170 crore from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). The compensation covers land acquired for the second reach of the project, stretching from Mukkam Palamoodu to Pothencode. This phase involves the acquisition of 1 acre and 70 cents from 400 families. Additionally, eight individuals eligible under the resettlement package will receive Rs 9.5 lakh each. The minister directed officials to expedite proceedings and complete compensation disbursement by Sept so that the tendering process can be initiated without delay. In the first reach of the project, 73.4 cent was acquired from 203 families, for which Rs 5.61 crore was disbursed as compensation. The third reach, from Pothencode to Mangalapuram, involved acquiring 66 cent from 247 families, with Rs 9.46 crore already distributed as compensation. An amount of Rs 47.83 crore has been sanctioned for the construction work, which is currently nearing completion and is expected to be finalised by the end of July. The minister also instructed officials to take necessary steps to ease travel difficulties faced by the public during the construction phase. The review meeting was attended by deputy collector Muhammad Safeer and representatives from various departments.

Tender for Peroorkada flyover work likely in July
T'puram: The construction tender work for the Peroorkada flyover project is expected to be issued in July. According to V K Prasanth, MLA, demolition of acquired structures is now approximately 50% complete, paving way for the work to begin in Aug. The tender announcement follows the effective execution of land acquisition and ongoing demolition efforts by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation of Kerala (RBDCK), the implementing agency of the project. The flyover, spanning an estimated 874m and funded by KIIFB, aims to decongest the busy Peroorkada junction, where roads from Nedumangad, Kudappanakunnu and other key arteries converge. Prasanth confirmed that once the remaining demolitions are finalized, RBDCK will promptly release the construction tender. "The project, estimated at around Rs 106 crore, is anticipated to span 18 months from groundbreaking to completion," he said. The initial blueprint featured an underpass, but RBDCK pivoted to a flyover design after identifying underground pipelines during structural surveys. Land acquisition was formalized in late 2024, with compensation disbursed to more than 80 landowners and around 25 shops demolished to facilitate the widening of the road.

Second phase of groyne construction gains momentum
The second phase of groyne field (pulimuttu) construction using tetrapods along the Alappuzha coast is making progress. Forty-one groyne fields are being constructed by the Kerala Irrigation Infrastructure Development Corporation (KIIDC) at a total cost of Rs. 107.8 crore sanctioned under the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB). Nineteen groynes with a total length of 1.8 km are coming up at Kakkazhom-Valajavazhi in the Ambalapuzha Assembly constituency, nine each at Ottamassery (960 m) in Cherthala and Kattoor-Polletahi (1 km) in Alappuzha and four at Nellanikkal (450 m) in Haripad. While the construction of groynes had already begun at Kakkazhom-Valajavazhi, Kattoor-Polletahi and Nellanikkal, work at Ottamassery was kick-started in the last week of May. 'We expect the work to gain momentum by next week,' said a KIIDC official. Ottamassery is the area most affected by sea surges in the Cherthala Assembly constituency, with 12 houses destroyed in recent years. The project to protect the coastline was conceived in 2021. Initially, an amount of ₹16 crore was sanctioned for constructing groyne fields at Ottamassery, but it proved insufficient. Following the intervention of Agriculture Minister P. Prasad, KIIFB sanctioned additional funds for the project. Though approval was granted based on a revised estimate of ₹30 crore, work was again stalled due to difficulties in procuring granite stones. Stones are now being transported from Konni in Pathanamthitta. In the first phase, KIIDC constructed 114 groynes with a total length of 11.26 km at five places — Kattoor, Ambalapuzha, Arattupuzha, Vattachal and Pathiyankara – at a cost of ₹223.18 crore sanctioned under KIIFB. The groynes were constructed using tetrapods weighing two and five tonnes. After laying granite stones of different sizes, tetrapods were placed on top. Groyne fields, built 100 m apart in areas prone to severe sea surges, were designed not to hamper the flow of floodwaters into the sea through existing channels. The groynes, which extend from the shore into the sea, are helping reduce the impact of waves and prevent coastal erosion.

Kavalam-Thattassery bridge: revised estimate gets KIIFB nod
The Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) has approved a revised estimate of ₹63.59 crore for the construction of the Kavalam-Thattassery bridge across the Pampa river in Kuttanad. Earlier, KIIFB had given financial approval for ₹60.03 crore. However, a revision in the schedule of rates by the Public Works department prevented the Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB), which has been entrusted with the bridge construction, from proceeding to the tendering stage. 'We will soon launch the tendering process. The work is expected to be awarded in two months,' said a KRFB official. Financial approval Though land acquisition was completed in 2023, the delay in receiving the final nod from KIIFB had stalled the project. While KIIFB granted financial approval two months ago, the revision of the schedule of rates necessitated the estimate to be revised, causing further delay. In 2016, the State government had allocated ₹30 crore for constructing the bridge and approach roads. Later, the project cost was increased to ₹52 crore. Initially, authorities planned to acquire the land needed through direct negotiated purchase. However, some landowners demanded a change in alignment. As the alignment was fixed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India, officials rejected the request. Later, the Revenue department dropped the plan to acquire land through negotiated purchase. By November 2018, the department announced that the land would be acquired by invoking the Land Acquisition Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act. Landowners were given time until December 1, 2018, to hand over consent letters. However, no follow-up action was initiated until 2020. After prolonged delays and protests led by a people's committee, more than an acre of land in Kavalam and Kunnumma villages was acquired for the project. Demolition of structures was completed in 2024. Nevertheless, the project remained stalled due to the pending clearance from KIIFB. Cost escalation The project cost increased due to cost escalation. The bridge will be approximately 400 m long and 8.5 m wide. Once completed, the bridge will connect the Alappuzha-Changanassery (AC) road and the Main Central (MC) road. It will help reduce the distance between Alappuzha and Kottayam by around 9 km. It will also facilitate development in Kuttanad's remote areas.
