Diamondbacks OF Carroll exits game at Toronto after being hit on left hand by pitch
TORONTO — Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll exited Wednesday's 8-1 loss at Toronto in the eighth inning after he was hit on his left hand by a pitch. Manager Torey Lovullo said X-rays did not reveal a fracture. Carroll stayed in to run the bases after being hit by a 91 mph sinker from rookie left-hander Justin Bruihl. But he was replaced before the bottom half of the eighth. Alek Thomas took Carroll's spot in the lineup, with Tim Tawa moving from center field to right. Lovullo said Carroll was hit on the fleshy part of the hand below his pinkie, resulting in a contusion. 'It's a very dangerous spot when you're talking about that bone on the pinkie side,' Lovullo said. 'It got a lot of meat, so we're grateful for that.' Carroll's status for Thursday's series finale was unclear. 'I wouldn't be surprised if he tells me he wants to play tomorrow,' Lovullo said. 'We're going to keep an open mind, we're going to continue to evaluate him tonight through the night and into the morning and see how he feels.' Carroll tripled and scored Arizona's only run. The 2023 NL Rookie of the Year is batting .255 with 20 homers and 44 RBIs. Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno was unavailable for a second consecutive game because of a sore right hand. A former Blue Jays prospect, Moreno was scratched from the lineup Tuesday after injuring his hand during batting practice. 'We'll continue to push on day to day with him,' Lovullo said. Blue Jays cut veteran reliever Erik Swanson, put struggling starter Bowden Francis on IL
The Toronto Blue Jays cut veteran reliever Erik Swanson on Tuesday and put struggling starter Bowden Francis on the 15-day injured list because of a right shoulder impingement. The Blue Jays recalled right-hander Paxton Schultz from Triple-A Buffalo and selected left-hander Justin Bruihl from the Bisons. Swanson was designated for assignment after allowing seven earned runs in 1 2/3 innings over two weekend appearances against Philadelphia. Swanson was 1–0 with a 15.19 ERA in six appearances since coming off the 60-day injured list on June 1. The right-hander missed the start of the season because of a nerve issue in his arm. Francis has lost his past six decisions and is winless since April 18 against Seattle. He's 2–8 with a 6.05 ERA in 14 starts. His IL stint is retroactive to June 15. Francis twice took no-hitters into the ninth inning in 2024, losing both bids on leadoff home runs in the final frame. Swanson went 2–2 with a 5.03 ERA in 45 games with Toronto in 2024, a challenging season that began with a young son being struck by a car during spring training. Swanson started the season on the injured list because of a sore forearm and was later demoted to Triple-A, rejoining the Blue Jays in July. Swanson went 4–2 with four saves and a 2.97 ERA in 2023, his first with Toronto after being acquired from Seattle in a trade that sent popular slugger Teoscar Hernández to the Mariners. Swanson will be eligible for free agency following the 2025 World Series.

Blue Jays place Bowden Francis (shoulder) on 15-day IL
June 17 - The Toronto Blue Jays placed right-hander Bowden Francis on the 15-day injured list Tuesday due to a right shoulder impingement. The 29-year-old Francis has fashioned a 2-8 record with a 6.05 ERA in 14 starts. He failed to get through four innings in any of his three starts in June, when he surrendered 12 earned runs, 13 hits and 10 walks in just 8 2/3 innings. In addition to placing Francis on the IL (retroactive to Sunday), the Blue Jays designated veteran reliever Erik Swanson for assignment. The 31-year-old appeared in only six games this season, but gave up nine runs in 5 1/3 innings for a 15.19 ERA. The one-time strikeout artist managed just three punchouts versus five walks. To fill their spots on the active roster, Toronto promoted versatile right-hander Paxton Schultz and lefty reliever Justin Bruihl from Triple-A Buffalo. Schultz, 27, authored a remarkable major league debut on April 20 when he threw 4 1/3 scoreless innings with eight strikeouts and no walks against Seattle. He compiled a 3.06 ERA in eight appearances with 24 strikeouts and four walks across 17 2/3 innings before returning to Buffalo. He could serve as the Blue Jays' opener in Wednesday's game against Arizona. Bruihl, 27, has made 79 appearances since making his big-league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021. He has posted a 2-2 record with a 4.62 ERA and one save between the Dodgers (2021-23), Colorado Rockies (2023) and Pittsburgh Pirates (2024). With Triple-A Buffalo this season, Bruihl has made 25 relief appearances and compiled a 3-3 record with a 3.81 ERA and two saves. He has fanned 36 and issued 10 unintentional walks over 28 1/3 innings. --Field Level Media
