Kerry back in All-Ireland minor football final, Tyrone earn impressive win over Roscommon
KERRY ARE back in the All-Ireland minor football final for the first time since their five-in-a-row golden era in the middle of the last decade, but the Kingdom will have it all to do when they take on a Tyrone side that registered yet another impressive victory, sweeping aside an unbeaten Roscommon team by 2-12 to 1-8 at Kingspan Breffni. Despite some heavy rain showers at the Cavan venue in the first half, these two sides produced some excellent football, with Roscommon taking a three-point lead after a superb goal from Seamus Hussey in the 25th minute. With the diagonal breeze set to favour the Connacht champions after the break, hopes were high among the large travelling contingent that they might be poised to reach a first final since 2006, and to potentially extend their record as the only team with a perfect record in finals (4-0). But two goals within 90 seconds just before the interval from Joel Kerr and Peter Colton flipped the script, leaving Tyrone 2-6 to 1-5 in front at the turnaround. That allowed Tyrone to use their physical power and defensive superiority to squeeze the life out of Roscommon in the second half. Advertisement The Rossies were energised when, with regular 'keeper Cian Trimble off the field on a black card, attacker Dean Casey stepped into the posts to save a Joel Kerr penalty, and points from Luke Shally and Christopher Feerick in the immediate aftermath reduced the gap to four points. Eoin Long, Thomas Meenan and Cathal Farley kicked the points to see Tyrone home, however. There was much more drama in Ennis, where a late, late two-pointer from Ben Kelliher clinched a 1-19 to 3-10 win for Kerry over Mayo. Mayo welcomed back midfielder Cian May to their side after he missed their quarter-final win over Offaly, and he proved his worth with an excellent run and finish for an early goal. Mayo still led by the minimum at half-time after Maidhc Ó Sé's goal was cancelled out by a Dara Flanagan penalty. Early two pointers from Kelliher and Kevin Griffin (two) after half-time pushed the Kingdom five points clear, but Mayo had another surge, and an Oran Murphy goal in between a run of three points in succession put their noses back in front. Ben Holmes looked like he might have kicked the winner for the Westerners in the first minute of stoppage time, but Kerry found the finish they needed through Gearód White, Nick Lacey and Kelliher to snatch their win, ending a run of four years in a row without a Munster team in the decider.

Conditions were far from ideal in Croke Park with a couple of torrential downpours throughout the game but the action between the white lines was anything but inspiring in a forgettable encounter. McLoughlin was only on the field for 20 minutes but he still walked away with the man-of-the-match award after a crucial two-pointer helped to turn to the tide with four points scored within a five-minute period while James McGrath put the game to bed with a late goal for the Lilies. Victory for Brian Flanagan's side also helped to bury a Kildare hoodoo at the Jones' Road venue with just their fourth win from 24 games there dating all the way back to 2014. For Fermanagh, Kieran Donnelly's side lacked the necessary punch in attack but they could have left just one point in it with eight minutes to play only for Josh Largo Elis' goal chance to be scrambled out on the line. Stunning second half fires Tyrone into minor decider
All-Ireland MFC semi-final: Tyrone 2-12 Roscommon 1-8 Tyrone are back in an All-Ireland MFC final for the first time since 2021, a storming second half performance crushing Roscommon's dream at Kingspan Breffni. The Connacht champions led in the latter stages of the first half, but a two-goal burst swung the game in favour of the Ulster lads, and they performed with resilience and assurance for the remainder of the contest. Goals from Peter Colton and Joel Kerr had them in control, with even the luxury of a missed penalty in the mix as they moved a step closer to a first All-Ireland title since 2010. The Rossies went ahead after five minutes through Dean Casey, despite struggling to retain possession off their own kick-out. And after regaining the lead with a Darren McAnespie two-pointer, the Ulster champions found themselves pegged back again as their opponents pushed on, with Alex Oates, Sam Hannon and Dara Curran leading the charge. Luke Shally lofted his second score of the afternoon, before Seamie Carthy side-stepped a defender to slice over a gem. The Red Hands struggled to break down a tenacious defence, but went back in front with a James Mulgrew effort, as they stepped up the intensity with the wind in their backs. But a tumultous finish to the half produced three goals as the game swung one way and then the other. The Connacht champions counter-attacked at pace for defender Seamus Hussey to get on the end of a move to smash his shot to the roof of the net for a three points lead. But less than a minute later, Joel Kerr got a fist to a loose ball for a Tyrone goal, and in stoppage time, Peter Colton smashed home a second to send them in with a 2-6 to 1-5 lead, a seven points swing in the space of four frantic minutes. They held the westerners scoreless for more than 15 minutes, having stretched the advantage through Pearse McDonald and Eoin Long, and Roscommon needed vital challenges from Diarmuid Higgins and Tadhg Rogers to avoid further goals as Long and Colton broke through. Aodhan Quinn had the Red Hands 2-8 to 1-6 ahead going into the final quarter, and they had a chance to wrap the game up when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Kerr, which also led to a black card for goalkeeper Cian Trimble. Casey stepped in and saved Kerr's spot kick, a let-off which sparked the energy that saw Roscommon rally with scores from Shally and Christopher Feerick as they trimmed the gap to four. But Tyrone, with Elliot Kerr, Ciaran McCrystal and James Daly rising to the defensive challenge, regained control, reeling off the final three points of the game to book their place in the decider. Tyrone scorers: P Colton, J Kerr 1-0 each, E Long (1f), D McAnespie (1tp) 0-3 each, J Mulgrew 0-2, P McDonald (f), C Farley, T Meenan, A Quinn 0-1 each. Tyrone Minors could lose Ulster Final hero to Premier League club for All-Ireland bid
Tyrone may be without their ace marksman Joel Kerr in their bid to capture the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship title. Kerr, who lifted the Man of the Match accolade following Tyrone's Ulster Minor Final win over Cavan at the weekend, is set to join Premier League side West Ham United this summer. In scoring 1-2 against Cavan, as well as proving the architect of other scores, Kerr left an indelible imprint on the game and will be viewed as a big loss to the Tyrone Minor side just now. Manager Gerrard Donnelly acknowledges the fact that Kerr's skills could take him down a different sporting avenue but it remains to be seen just what path his career takes. His marksmanship underpinned Tyrone's win over Cavan but it was the manner in which he created one of Tyrone's two goals that underlined his sublime creativity and skills. In the early stages of the second-half, Kerr led a counter-attack from close to his own team's posts in which he carried the ball the full length of the pitch before slipping a pass to Cathal Farey, who fired in the team's second goal. With the Ulster Minor and Under-20 titles now under their belts, Tyrone are setting their sights on even more success. Manager Paul Devlin, who gave outstanding service to the Red Hands as a senior player, has overseen the county's recent dominance of the Under-20 sector at provincial level and believes that several current under-age players have the potential to achieve success at the top level.
