Relief for travellers: Govt announces ₹3,000 annual toll pass on NHs
Addressing long-standing concerns of national highway users about high toll fees, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Wednesday announced an annual toll pass that will eliminate repeated toll deductions for personal passenger vehicles. 'In a transformative step towards hassle-free highway travel, we are introducing a Fastag-based annual pass priced at ₹3,000, effective from August 15. Valid for one year from the date of activation or up to 200 trips — whichever comes first — this pass is designed exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, Jeeps, and vans,' Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said. A dedicated link for activation and renewal will soon be made available on the RajmargYatra application (app) as well as on the official websites of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and MoRTH. 'This policy addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60-kilometre (km) radius and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction. By reducing wait times, easing congestion, and minimising disputes at toll plazas, the annual pass aims to deliver a faster and smoother travel experience for millions of private vehicle owners,' Gadkari said. The annual pass is available only on the RajmargYatra mobile app and the NHAI website, and will reflect in the user's existing Fastag upon completion of payment. A dedicated link for the facility will be issued soon. The pass is valid only at national highway and national expressway fee plazas, the ministry said. At fee plazas on expressways, state highways, etc. managed by state governments or local bodies, the Fastag will operate as a regular Fastag, and applicable user fee charges may apply. According to the ministry, the pass is non-transferable and is valid only for the vehicle on which the Fastag is affixed and registered. Using it on another vehicle will lead to deactivation. According to the ministry's gazette notification, the rate for the pass will be subject to revision each year, in accordance with current revision standards, which are linked to the Wholesale Price Index. Experts say the policy will bring major relief to users, while its impact on highway operating companies will be minimal. 'The introduction of the annual toll pass will enhance convenience for travellers by streamlining passage through toll plazas. Given that the average passenger vehicle covers roughly 10,000 km per year — most of which occurs outside national highways — the direct impact on toll operators is expected to be minimal. However, this move brings additional advantages, including reduced congestion, improved operational efficiency, and smoother travel patterns. For frequent travellers who use toll roads for more than 2,500 to 3,000 km annually, the pass offers considerable cost savings and added convenience, making long-distance travel more seamless,' said Jagannarayan Padmanabhan, senior director and global head, consulting, Crisil Intelligence.

Auto workers union president retaliated against top officer, monitor says
The federal monitor overseeing the United Auto Workers union determined that UAW President Shawn Fain retaliated against Secretary-Treasurer Margaret Mock by reassigning some of her duties last year, according to a report released on Tuesday. The monitor, New York attorney Neil Barofsky , opened the investigation in February 2024 to review allegations around the two officers' actions, including that Mock said she had faced retaliation for her refusal or reluctance to authorize certain expenditures for Fain's office. "Fain acted on a premeditated plan to take action against Mock," the report stated, adding that the union president retaliated against her because she refused "to grant exceptions to the strict policy restrictions governing the expenditure of Union resources." The UAW did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Mock also did not immediately respond to a request for a comment. In the report, the monitor called for the union's executive board to reinstate the various responsibilities stripped from Mock, which included purchasing, benefits and pensions. The secretary-treasurer was also previously accused of obstructing union operations and seeking to influence board votes, claims the monitor said were unfounded. Barofsky's latest report is damaging to Fain, a symbol of union power resurgence across the country during a 2023 strike against the Detroit Three automakers , Ford Motor, General Motors and Stellantis, maker of Ram trucks and Jeeps. The monitor was appointed in 2021 following a years-long corruption scandal that resulted in the federal convictions of several former leaders. He has since regularly released reports on his team's investigations into the union's practices. Tuesday's report is the twelfth from the monitor's office.

Motorcycle and Jeep ride June 21 in Lafayette to benefit homeless veterans
LAFAYETTE, IN — On Saturday, June 21, riders from across the region will gather to show solidarity, raise awareness and generate funding to end veteran homelessness in the fourth No Hero Should Be Homeless Motorcycle + Jeep Ride. The ride benefits LTHC Homeless Services' Veteran Services Program, which helped secure permanent housing for 57 veterans and 35 of their family members in the last year, according to a news release. Hosted at Hunter's Moon Harley-Davidson (225 Progress Drive, Lafayette), the event kicks off with on-site registration from 10 a.m. to noon, and "kickstands up" at noon for both motorcycles and Jeeps. Registration fees: $20 single rider and $25 rider + passenger, and $25 Jeep entry. For more information, contact Julie Camp, engagement coordinator, at jcamp@ All proceeds directly support LTHC's Veteran Services Program, which provides housing, case management and support services to veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Tippecanoe and seven surrounding counties. From transportation and employment readiness to home essentials and rental assistance, LTHC's program fills the critical gaps that housing vouchers alone cannot. 'Far too many veterans can't afford housing. This ride is a way for us to not only raise awareness of our veterans who are experiencing homelessness, but to gain additional resources to help,' Jennifer Layton, president and CEO of LTHC Homeless Services, said in the release. After the ride, participants can return to the Hunter's Moon lot to enjoy food and a sense of community among those who care deeply about ending homelessness for veterans in Region IV. The event is sponsored by A&D Biker & Jeep Ministries, with hospitality provided by Boilermaker Hospitality through Purdue University. Additional support comes from Doug Pierce, Milestone Contractors, The National Group, Purdue Federal Credit Union, Valero, and the JR Kelly Company. Additionally, the Veteran Services Program is funded in part through grants from CenterPoint Energy, the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs through their Supportive Services for Veterans and Families. Jeeps roll into semi-state since 2007
DUBOIS COUNTY, Ind. (WEHT) — The Dubois County Jeeps baseball team is heading to semi-state for the first time since 2007. Jeeps head coach Luke Woolems says the team can feel the excitement. 'There's a difference between excitement and nerves,' Woolems said. Excitement and anticipation to do something the school has never done before. But around practice, Northeast Dubois is treating it like it's just another day in May. 'I feel calmer than I have been the entire tournament at this point,' Woolems said. 'I think the players feeding off that and they are relaxed.' 'I know for sure we are going to walk in there confident and so there's going to be nothing to it,' senior Aiden Sheetz said. But there is something to what the Jeeps are doing recently. Winners of six straight games, Northeast Dubois have won those games by a combined score of 73 – 7. The Jeeps senior slugger Aidan Sheetz is a big reason why. Going into postseason play, Sheetz had one homerun on the season now that total is up to four. Three long balls in just four games. When you ask him what's working once again it's about staying calm under pressure. 'I'm confident at the plate and I have a message on my wrist I read every time I go up to bat,' Sheetz said. 'What's that message if you don't mind me asking It's Philippians four verses six through seven it says don't be anxious about anything just leave it up to Him. That's what I do every time.' Leaving that anxiety behind might be tough when you are on the doorstep of the biggest win in school history. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Struggling Stellantis Picks Insider to Steer Turnaround Effort
Stellantis has brought new meaning to car trouble, and now it's hoping a shakeup at the top will help it steer clear of a fiscal dead end. The multinational automaking giant — one of Detroit's Big Three by virtue of its Chrysler ownership — announced Wednesday that Americas COO Antonio Filosa will soon sit in the driver's seat as its chief executive officer. He'll be called upon to maneuver out of a veritable traffic jam of issues, including his predecessor's strategic blunders, the looming tariff war, and a challenging global auto market. READ ALSO: E.l.f. Soars After $1 Billion Pow(d)er Move to buy Hailey Bieber's Rhode and Omada Health Preps to Go Public as IPO Market Revives When France's Groupe PSA and American-Italian Fiat Chrysler merged to form Stellantis in 2021, it brought Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Fiat, Maserati, Alfa Romeo, and more under one roof. The new automaking behemoth promised billions in savings through synergies and collaboration on emerging technologies, such as electric vehicles. And, for a minute, it delivered. Under its first CEO, Carlos Tavares, the new group achieved a record $20 billion in net profit in 2023, an 11% year-over-year increase, and a record $203 billion in net revenue. And then, faster than a Maserati MC20, his strategy went south. Under Tavares, Stellantis hiked prices during the pandemic like most automakers — roughly 50% from 2019 to 2024 in its case, compared with 23% inflation. But then, unlike others, it refused to lower them. Customers balked at Jeeps that cost over $100,000, and inventory piled up, which forced Stellantis to sell off 100,000 units at a heavy discount to clear the backlog. There were other bad signs, namely layoffs and idled plants, and Stellantis' US dealers grew furious: Their council blasted the company's 'reckless short-term decision-making' in an open letter last September. Other critics (car-beraters?) piled up, including the United Auto Workers, who threatened to strike. Tavares abruptly resigned in December after several quarters marked by flailing performance. All told, Stellantis reported a 70% drop in net profits in 2024 to $5.7 billion. At the same time, its US sales plummeted 15%, and its US market share, which had declined roughly 3 percentage points over three years to 8%, fell into fifth place behind Honda. The first quarter of this year brought a 14% year-over-year revenue slide and North American shipments falling 20%. Enter Filosa, who will have to tackle all this and a geopolitical headache: Earlier this year, Stellantis pledged to invest more than $5 billion in the US, including the reopening of an Illinois plant, in an effort to court President Trump. But its international footprint, which includes facilities in Mexico and Canada in addition to Europe, means it is among the automakers most exposed to a trade war. Morgan Stanley analysts said earlier this year that Stellantis and Porsche had the highest US exposures, with about 25% of their unit sales potentially impacted, while Fitch estimates that close to 40% of the company's US sales involve vehicles manufactured abroad. Order Up: While Stellantis is undoubtedly facing pressure from tariffs on car imports, which Trump set at 25%, potentially good news arrived Wednesday. A federal court blocked the president's plan to impose 'reciprocal' tariffs on dozens of countries, which could have led to even higher duties. Trump, for example, recently threatened a 50% tariff for the EU, where much of Stellantis' operations are based. The ruling does not, however, impact Trump's auto tariffs, levied using a national security exemption. Moreover, Goldman Sachs chief US political economist Alec Phillips wrote, following the ruling, that the bank expects the administration 'will find other ways to impose tariffs' such as broadening sectoral tariffs under Section 232 or launching Section 301 investigations on US trading partners, paving the way for tariffs to follow.
