Analyst's QB rankings shockingly leaves Commanders' Jayden Daniels outside of top 10
Rankings are subjective. Remember that. That doesn't mean we can't review some rankings and ask: "What were they thinking?" Such is the case with a recent list from Charles McDonald of Yahoo Sports. McDonald ranked his version of the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks and omitted the Washington Commanders' QB Jayden Daniels. Advertisement Here's McDonald's list: At first glance, I thought it was a mistake. How could McDonald leave Daniels off his list? It's understandable if he didn't rank Daniels No. 5. While several already believe Daniels is a top-five signal caller, some believe he still has much to prove. Neither perspective is wrong. Daniels did things last season that no other rookie has ever done. He won the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award, led the Commanders to the NFC championship game and the franchise's best season in 33 years. McDonald's top four is inarguable: Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow. Regardless of the order, those are the NFL's top four QBs heading into 2025. Beginning at No. 5 is where things get interesting. Advertisement McDonald chose Justin Herbert over Daniels. Herbert is 0-2 as a starting quarterback in the playoffs, while Daniels won two playoff games as a rookie. No, there's more to quarterbacking than playoff wins or win/loss record, but, based on last season, would you take Herbert over Daniels? McDonald ranked the QBs into four tiers: the Patrick Mahomes tier, the almost-Mahomes tier, the ceiling-raiser tier, and the floor-raiser tier. Jackson and Allen landed in the second tier, while Burrow, Herbert and Matthew Stafford all landed in the third tier. Finally, Dak Prescott, Geno Smith, Jordan Love and C.J. Stroud landed in the final tier. Daniels should be in everyone's top 10. So should Baker Mayfield. Could anyone make the case that Prescott, Smith and Love are better than Daniels or Mayfield? This week, Brian Thomas Jr. was asked about getting to know rookie WR/DB Travis Hunter, 'It's been pretty good. Pretty fun. He's a fun dude. Super cool, super chill—I'm not going to say that one (laughs). Super cool, super fun. He's just a fun guy to be around. A lot of energy. Super fun.' Brian said that rookie who player Coach Prime is definitely trying to soak up as much information as possible. 'Yeah, he's been asking a lot of questions. 'Yeah, for sure. We compete in everything we do. We come out here each and every day, coming out here striving to be the best.' Advertisement Thomas Jr. talked about his first time seeing Hunter out on the field. 'I actually came out here for when they had the rookie minicamp. I was up here, so I came out. I just stepped out here and looked at him doing the drills and stuff. It was really just how quick he was and how detailed he was. When he might've gotten a drill wrong or something, and he was just hopping back in line and going right back at it and trying to find ways to do it right and find ways to be the best that he can be.' Finally, the second-year receiver was asked if he's tired of answering Travis Hunter related questions? He's taking it in stride and understands there is a lot of excitement. He also made it clear he wants to help others the way vets helped him as a rookie. 'No, it would never be like that because guys that were here last year, they helped me out throughout the whole season and they were there for me. So, anything he needs help with, I'll be there for him.' Advertisement Granted, Robinson Jr. is the lead back, and he needs to put on a show behind Jayden Daniels. Yet to play a full season, 2025 would be the perfect time for B-Rob to do that, surpass 1,000 yards, and earn himself a new contract. Of course, that is easier said than done, but to achieve it, everything starts in the offseason, and Brian has been doing what he needs to do to best prepare himself for a career-defining season as a Commander. And he'll let the chips fall where they may. He did things no one expected him to do, and set records on his way to earning Offensive Rookie of the Year honors. On top of that, Daniels led the Commanders in their best season in over 30 years, followed by a postseason run that ended at the NFC Championship game. Now, in year two, many believe that Daniels will suffer a sophomore slump as so many players do, but even if he does, NFL A\analyst Sam Monson believes Daniels is the future best quarterback in the game. "Jayden Daniels looks like a future MVP," Monson says. "If he picks up the way he left off, and that's no guarantee based off what we've seen from various other quarterbacks, but Jayden Daniels showed last year he's got everything you want. He's got the arm, he's got the defense reading ability, he's got the athleticism, and then he's got that 'it' factor, right? That clutch gene, the ability to drag a team that shouldn't be there into the NFC Championship game. The ability to, "Oh look, we're down late against Joe Burrow and the Bengals," just drop a perfect touchdown pass to win a game." We may have seen that last season against the Chicago Bears when Daniels threw a gorgeous Hail Mary pass to the end zone that Noah Brown caught. "Like, he's got everything you want," Monson continues. "As long as he doesn't drop off hard in year two, and even if he does, maybe it's year 3, 4, he bounces back and becomes the best guy. Daniels looks like the most likely of those young quarterbacks to me now to be that future MVP and future best quarterback in the game." Daniels has given no one any reason to doubt his ability, and even if there is a dip in his production, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a slump. Especially if the Commanders reach the postseason again. No, as long as Daniels remains healthy, he will continue to perform at the elite level we have become accustomed to. And while he may not earn MVP honors this year, that award is surely in his future.

No one expected the Washington Commanders to compete for a playoff spot in the 2024 season. It was the first season of a "recalibration," as head coach Dan Quinn called it. There was a new general manager, a new coaching staff, a rookie quarterback and over 50% of the roster turned over. Washington shocked everyone, going 12-5 and advancing to the NFC championship game one year after finishing 4-13. Quarterback Jayden Daniels was phenomenal as a rookie, looking like a 10-year veteran and one of the best players in the NFL, leading his team to an unforgettable season. Advertisement One of the more shocking moments came in the NFC Divisional Round, when the Commanders shocked the top-seeded Lions on the road in front of a sold-out Detroit crowd. It wasn't a nailbiter either, as Washington won 45-31. One member of last year's Detroit team said that Washington would not have won that game if the Lions had been healthy. Here's veteran wide receiver Allen Robinson talking to the Woodward Sports Network about that game and last season. Robinson appeared in 12 games last season, catching three passes for 30 yards. He is currently a free agent. On one hand, Robinson is not wrong. That result could have been different if players like Detroit defensive end Aidan Hutchinson were healthy. On the other hand, it's the NFL. No teams are fully healthy in January. Ultimately, the Lions had no answer for Daniels, and Washington's defense forced four Jared Goff turnovers in the upset win. They had arguably the NFL's top roster, a star-studded coaching staff, home-field advantage and didn't even make it to the NFC championship game.
