Aussie star Suaalii lies in wait as Lions campaign commences in Dublin
The British and Irish Lions get their campaign up and running against Argentina at Aviva Stadium on Friday night – but the three-Test series has got more daunting with cross-code superstar Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii in line to face Andy Farrell's side this summer. The 21-year-old was recruited from rugby league side Sydney Roosters on a three-year-deal worth a reported Au$5.35million (€3m) and Suaalii made an immediate impact on rugby union during the autumn internationals with a star turn against England in Twickenham. There were fears that the centre would have to sit out the series after he broke his jaw in a collision with New South Wales Waratahs teammate Andrew Kellaway in May. Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii in action for Australia. Pic:But Suaalii is on course to feature against the Lions, with head coach Joe Schmidt naming him in a 36-player squad on Thursday. The former Leinster and Ireland coach has also included giant La Rochelle lock Will Skelton. But veteran out-half James O'Connor has missed the cut. The 34-year-old has endured no shortage of disciplinary issues in the past, but the talented Australian back had found his best form since a galvanising move to the Crusaders this season. O'Connor played a prominent role for the Wallabies against the Lions 12 years ago, starting all three Tests in the No10 shirt. But Schmidt has opted for Ben Donaldson, Noah Lolesio and Tom Lynagh as his options at out-half for the warm-up Test against Fiji on July 6. James O'Connor playing with the Crusaders. Pic:'We've invested in three guys in that (No) 10 spot, and we felt trying to balance things up, we're going to keep investing in those guys,' said Schmidt. 'We didn't want to interrupt that. I'm not saying we got it right, I'm just saying that's what we chose to do.' Western Force back-row forward Nick Champion de Crespigny and Brumbies winger Corey Toole are the only two uncapped players in the large squad while Ulster-bound loosehead Angus Bell, backrowers Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson and scrumhalf Tate McDermott are familiar faces. Japan-based stalwarts Samu Kerevi and Marika Koroibete as well as Bordeaux No8 Pete Samu were all omitted. Australia head coach Joe Schmidt. Pic: INPHO/Laszlo Geczo 'Selection is always tight and there'll be players who are excited and those that are disappointed,' Schmidt reasoned. 'As coaches, there was a lot of healthy, robust discussion and we think we've selected a group that will work hard and connect well as a squad. 'There's some continuity from last year, plus a few new or returning players, who have forced their way into the mix through strong performances in Super Rugby Pacific. 'This squad's immediate focus is Fiji, and we will need to hit the ground running having not been together since early January.' The Wallabies play Fiji on July 6 in Newcastle.

PH-Japan educational ties strengthen 'Golden Age' relations — envoy
Japan underscored the significance of educational cooperation in strengthening the "Golden Age" of bilateral relations with the Philippines. In a press release issued on Thursday, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya said a deeper educational partnership between Manila and Tokyo advances and strengthens their "Golden Age" of bilateral relations. Kazuya also stressed that such collaboration could establish long-term trust and people-to-people connections, which will later support the nation's lasting diplomatic ties. Japan is currently engaged in a number of educational partnerships with the Philippines including trainings, scholarship grants, and student exchanges. Last year, the Department of Education (DepEd) partnered with a Japanese company in a bid to improve the math proficiency of public school learners. The DepEd signed a memorandum of agreement with Japan-based firm Sprix, Inc. to provide public school students free access to the Test of Fundamental Skills (TOFAS). According to DepEd, TOFAS allows teachers to assess students' calculation and problem-solving skills "accurately, providing valuable data to tailor instruction according to each student's needs." To recall, Kazuya welcomed distinguished Japan Studies professors from the University of the Philippines (UP) in April, and De La Salle University (DLSU) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in May to his residence in Makati City. Among those who visited him include UP Asian Center Professor Dr. Matthew M. Santamaria, Associate Professor Dr. Jocelyn Celero, Assistant Professor Dr. Karl Ian U. Cheng Chua, retired professor and former Center for International Studies (CIS) director Dr. Cynthia Neri Zayas, and UP CIS Professor Dr. Amparo Adelina Umali III. In a separate meeting, Kazuya also met with DLSU's Department of International Studies Professor Dr. Dennis Trinidad, Associate Professor Dr. Ron Bridget Vilog and ADMU's Japanese Studies Program, Assistant Professors Dr. Kristine Michelle L. Santos and Dr. Hiroko Nagai-Yabut. Also on Thursday, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. flew to Osaka, Japan for a working visit. Last April, Japan said the opening of its new visa processing center in Manila shows the deeper people-to-people relations between the Philippines and Japan. The event was hailed as an "indicator and proof" of the "Golden Age" of the two countries' relations. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

Springbok hugs are just different, says captain Siya Kolisi on Lood de Jager return
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and hooker Malcolm Marx share a lighter moment at a training session in Johannesburg this week. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix The Springboks are in high spirits ahead of the first international match of the season against the Barbarians in Cape Town next Saturday. Captain Siya Kolisi said on Wednesday that although they are not looking too far ahead into the international season, the players are happy to be back in camp and the 'family' environment of the national set-up. It's their second week together as the world champions fine-tune their preparations for the friendly against the Barbarians at the Cape Town Stadium, ahead of double Tests against Italy and a once-off encounter versus Georgia in July. According to Kolisi, they have been sweating on the training field as they look to take in as much as possible from their coaches before they shift to the match-day week. 'Training is as hard as games... sometimes, it's even harder,' Kolisi said about being drilled by the Bok coaches. 'Felix (Jones, assistant coach) is back, and he's always on our case and shouting,' the captain added with a laugh, explaining how the Irishman drills them to get the best out of them. 'When we did the fitness test (last week), he was always pushing you to get yourself there. 'You try and get yourself there, and you are dead (tired) by the end of it. And then he says, 'you did well'. 'That is all they want from us: to give our best and not worry about mistakes. Nobody makes a mistake on purpose. You play (your rugby) in safety here. 'They want us to play at this intensity, so they train us to get to that intensity. That is the nice thing, and I enjoy being here.' Kolisi said it was good to see a well-known face like Lood de Jager back in the set-up. The Japan-based lock missed the last couple of seasons with a heart condition, pericarditis, and a shoulder injury. But he is back in the mix and ready to contribute to the side. The captain added that it is always tough for the players to leave the Bok set-up at the end of the season. 'Playing here is not forever, and somewhere along the line, it is going to end. So, we appreciate it a whole lot more when we get back in camp. When you see a guy like Lood after such a long time, it is special,' Kolisi said. 'The hugs are just different; I don't know how to explain it. He (De Jager) was punching me, and I asked him, 'Why are you hitting me', and he said, 'Because I am excited to see you'. 'He was greeting everyone with a smile on his face. He knows how it feels when you are not here.
