PH-Japan educational ties strengthen 'Golden Age' relations — envoy
Japan underscored the significance of educational cooperation in strengthening the "Golden Age" of bilateral relations with the Philippines.
In a press release issued on Thursday, Japanese Ambassador to the Philippines Endo Kazuya said a deeper educational partnership between Manila and Tokyo advances and strengthens their "Golden Age" of bilateral relations.
Kazuya also stressed that such collaboration could establish long-term trust and people-to-people connections, which will later support the nation's lasting diplomatic ties.
Japan is currently engaged in a number of educational partnerships with the Philippines including trainings, scholarship grants, and student exchanges.
Last year, the Department of Education (DepEd) partnered with a Japanese company in a bid to improve the math proficiency of public school learners.
The DepEd signed a memorandum of agreement with Japan-based firm Sprix, Inc. to provide public school students free access to the Test of Fundamental Skills (TOFAS).
According to DepEd, TOFAS allows teachers to assess students' calculation and problem-solving skills "accurately, providing valuable data to tailor instruction according to each student's needs."
To recall, Kazuya welcomed distinguished Japan Studies professors from the University of the Philippines (UP) in April, and De La Salle University (DLSU) and Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) in May to his residence in Makati City.
Among those who visited him include UP Asian Center Professor Dr. Matthew M. Santamaria, Associate Professor Dr. Jocelyn Celero, Assistant Professor Dr. Karl Ian U. Cheng Chua, retired professor and former Center for International Studies (CIS) director Dr. Cynthia Neri Zayas, and UP CIS Professor Dr. Amparo Adelina Umali III.
In a separate meeting, Kazuya also met with DLSU's Department of International Studies Professor Dr. Dennis Trinidad, Associate Professor Dr. Ron Bridget Vilog and ADMU's Japanese Studies Program, Assistant Professors Dr. Kristine Michelle L. Santos and Dr. Hiroko Nagai-Yabut.
Also on Thursday, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. flew to Osaka, Japan for a working visit.
Last April, Japan said the opening of its new visa processing center in Manila shows the deeper people-to-people relations between the Philippines and Japan. The event was hailed as an "indicator and proof" of the "Golden Age" of the two countries' relations. — VDV, GMA Integrated News

(PhilEco), a major player in the design, construction, and operation of integrated sanitary solid waste management and disposal facilities in the Philippines. Kanadevia Corporation specializes in environmental systems, including advanced WtE facilities, desalination plants and water treatment technologies. The said firm was the Japanese proponent, co-investor and technology provider in the Manila WtE Project. Further, Marcos also had a meeting with the executives of Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., ranked as among the world's top shipbuilders. The company has been a key player in the international maritime industry since 1917, accounting for a significant share of the global market for medium-sized bulk carriers. It is embarking on its fifth phase of expansion in its shipyard in Balamban, Cebu by investing in new capital equipment and enhancing research and development capabilities. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Sara Duterte's office receives Ombudsman order on confi funds raps
The Office of the Vice President (OVP) on Friday confirmed receipt of the order issued by the Office of the Ombudsman in relation to the alleged misuse of confidential funds by Vice President Sara Duterte and nine other officials. The OVP said it received the order at about 9 a.m. Friday, June 20. The Ombudsman has given Duterte and the other respondents ten days from receipt of the order to file their counter-affidavits "together with the affidavit/s of their witness/es, and other supporting documents." The order, which was issued Thursday, came after the House of Representatives filed a complaint against Duterte and several others for plunder, technical malversation, falsification, use of falsified documents, perjury, bribery, corruption of public officers, betrayal of public trust, and culpable violation of the Constitution, a source told GMA Integrated News. The complaint stemmed from the recommendation of the House Committee on Good Governance and Public Accountability to file charges against Duterte for the alleged misuse of P500 million in confidential funds of the OVP, and P112.5 million in confidential funds of DepEd from 2022 to 2024. Earlier on Friday, the OVP said Duterte would be traveling to Australia for a personal trip and to join a June 22 protest action in Melbourne calling for the release of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte. Aside from Duterte, the other respondents in the Ombudsman's order are: OVP Atty. Marcos meets with Japanese tourism sector
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. met with Japanese tourism partners on Friday as part of his working visit in Japan. In a meeting with tourism stakeholders, Marcos was given an overview of key interests and opportunities for Philippine tourism in Japan. The stakeholders represent important areas of tourism, including industry associations, travel and tour companies, airlines and airports. Those part of the meeting were the Japan Tourism Agency (JTA), Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA) Kansai / JTB West Japan Area Representative, Japan Philippines Tourism Council (JPTC), Kansai Regional Division, HIS Co., Ltd., Nippon Travel Agency, Hankyu Travel International Co., Ltd., Kansai Airports, Philippine Airlines (PAL), and Cebu Pacific. According to Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, Marcos highlighted his prioritization of tourism development through the help of infrastructure. She said the President mentioned the development of airports in the metro and in other regions. ''This was received very well by our Japanese stakeholders, especially considering that our data shows that Japanese travelers favor Cebu, Palawan, Boracay, Bohol, and are also very interested in other emerging island destinations across the country,'' she said. The President also gave his commitment as regards the Philippine government's continued prioritization of connectivity, Frasco said. Marcos also mentioned the Department of Tourism's Philippine Experience Heritage, Culture, and Arts Caravans. Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to Japan Mylene Garcia-Albano said Marcos wants to show his appreciation to all those who worked together in producing the Philippine Pavilion at the World Expo Osaka 2025.
